    Hi everyone,
I just got a 2000 Toyota Tundra 136k miles..it had been on salty roads and thus the breather pipes going into the front differential and transmission/transfer case are completely rusted out. What is the easiest way to reach those? I'm sure they are too rusted to just unscrew, will I have to pull the motor/drop the tranny?

Also what is the little plastic covered black gearbox on the back of the tranny? It's cracked open....

    Thanks for any tips!!

    Jordan

    Hey Jordan welcome from Nevada.

I probably can’t help much but if you post some pictures of what you’re talking about some other members will be better equipped to assist you

The black box is probably your 4wd actuator.

Normally, those little breathers just pull right out of the tube the rest in. I used a pair of needle nose pliers I think. In your case, you're going to have to be gentle and see what happens. It almost looks like most of the breather is gone.

Do you think those being blocked would cause the pressure to build up in the transmission that led to the overflowv out of the dipstick? They seem to go to the four-wheel drive actuator and the differential.... Not sure why that transmission would overflow in that case... Is there another vent for the transmission somewhere?

Pull those rusted corpses out and install new breathers.

I cut them off below the rusted out vents... But the problem is actually worse farther down the line than those... Where those rubber hoses connect to metal tubes that then go into the differential. Those metal tubes are rusted out I can crush them with my fingers

Those 2 you pictured are ADD and front diff breathers. The transmission has one on top of the case on top of the transmission itself. You have to reach your arm up there to feel for it. Basically its inaccessible.

Oh okay thank you.... I'm sure the transmission one is then clogged and rusted also.. may have to drop the transmission to reach it and work on it huh?

Your truck is probably NEFTR (not economically feasible to repair) unless you can DIY. The rust cancer has taken hold.

Looks like you have a leaking Valve Cover Gasket (dripping down on exhaust).

That frame looks to have some serious rust. You might have rusted through areas, or close to it.
Have you checked the frame from front to back for rusted through holes, or weakened frame?
Especially around the front and rear suspension. Drop the spare and look at the cross-member back there also.
    NY trk?
