Thinking of putting a roof rack on my 2014 sr5 tundra? Cananyone suggest what would be the best. I've checked out the Smittybilt defender, but not sure how would to secure it.

Just a few, more to come
Theres not much out there, not specific to the Tundra at least. @Spvrtan is rocking a Gobi that he modded to fit his tundra i believe. So there are racks that can be adapted, just not much 'off the shelf' that'll go right on. Whatever you do, mount to the 'gutters' on the roof where the black filler strips are, not to the actual roof otherwise it wont be able to support much weight

Yep, I have a Gobi rack that was meant for the F-150 that I modified. It does require drilling 8 holes into the roof. I also didn't mount it to the gutters and opted to follow how Gobi mounts it on the Fords, which is right next to the gutter at the bend. I stand on top of the rack and have jumped on it a few times with no issues. The rack itself mounts to two mounting rails you mount to the roof so the rails do a pretty good job of dispersing the weight along the edge of the gutters.

I know Ekstrom designs makes custom roof racks specifically for the Tundra with rolled tubular roof racks. Eventually I will have David at ekstrom build one for my truck. He builds it for whatever lights you want to install on the rack. IMG_5143.jpg

If you look at the second photo you can see one of the anchor points. Most roof racks attach along rubber trim at the edge of the roof.

David was supposed to be unveiling a new roof rack design at sema this year. David is the owner and is a Tundra owner who is extremely helpful for any questions.

I really would like one of these but I'd like the less invasive one incase I sell it and the new owner doesn't want holes in his roof.

I don't know how you would fasten a roof rack without drilling holes and bolting it to the truck. Let me know if there is a simpler installation method? I would think having it attached in the rubber channel is the least invasive.

I've seen mounts that attach around the gutters and I think Thule makes some also. There are are few companies who make some for non drilling but I don't own a pavement princess and my luck the damn thing will fall off after I get into some hairy off roading.

I know David built a Tundra for a previous Sema show and it had one of his full roof racks. After leaving sema the truck was hit in an accident and flipped several times. Look at these photos and see how strong his welds held up. The driver and passenger in the truck were ok and several people say the roof rack helped support the roof from collapsing. IMG_5148.jpg

That's terrible man. Glad they are ok, and that looks like it served a great purpose. When you say "welds", do you mean the rack was welded to the roof?

Only the roof rack itself is welded. The rack has mounting points for bolts to attach it to the roof. So you can remove the rack with just hardware.

Have you thought about just getting a yakima baseline system and putting jetstreams on it? Very easy to remove and you could put whatever accessories you want on top? I have a set from my civic and all I have to do is get new baseclips that work with the tundra. I put my kayak on this roof rack on my civic countless times and they are very well built.

No thanks. I like the rack to be permanent on my truck. Also I hate the way Yakima looks.
