I see 4 star ratings. Does that equal what the article claims?

One of the considerations IIHS uses are headlights, so the default halogen don't meet their standards. Though the passenger crash is a big issue. It also explains why they removed the handles on the A-pillar on newer models since the dummy's head hit it.
Will the 2020 be the new design model addressing these issues? Will Tundra get a diesel (D-4D), or hybrid?

    Meh

This truck is still probably safer than any of my older vehicles I have ever owned. Especially the smaller ones. Maybe it’s not up to par with today’s latest and greatest standards, but it’s still safer than a 1972 pick up truck. Yeah those trucks were tanks but they had zero crumple zones. Basically you come to a dead stop and then your body continues forward inside the cab.

Too bad they had to ruin a Bel Air to prove it.

Depends on the wreck itself. I’m a firefighter and have seen Tundra hold up very well in a few accidents. In worse cases the truck is totaled BUT occupants were able to walk away unharmed

Couldn’t they find a junker to do that with? That was probably some old man’s car who kept it that way for years. Then they were like Yep we’re going to smash it!

No vehicle is indestructible. My wife flipped end over end (not rolled) 5 times in a tiny yaris and survived without a scratch. I wont drive a Ford or Chevy because they are "safer". They would be safer in theory because when you are on the side of the road ... you are mostly out of harm's way.

Definitely will not drive a Chevy for some reason a GMC is built almost identical but hold up better don’t understand why but will not drive a Chevy

I know it's better than the 1996 Ford F-250 I had for the last 23 years.

I'm going to be the outlier here and say while I do like the Tundra Reliability and the tried and true 5.7 8cyl (although I've had the cam tower leak), Toyota does need to invest in the Tundra. This includes a beefier frame for towing/payload and some better design for crash protection. They tried to patch the crash protection with the TSS system, but that has had some issues. I also want updated infotech system and better stereo, but that is getting off topic. While the TSS is helpful (when it works properly), it does not protect me and my family when the idiot in oncoming traffic is looking at his/her phone and wanders into my lane head on. At that moment, I want the truck to protect it's occupants as best as possible. So yeah...I'm an outlier here, but I want Toyota Tundras to be great in more ways than reliability.

I was going to say the same, I've seen third gens rolled, front end ripped off, motors shoved back completely to where it was non existant and the passenger was always coherent and walking wounded while we use the jaws on the other vehicle to free occupants

Didn't read the article. However, after two accidents in last 4 months, the safety I felt was better than my past vehicles. I was t boned on one of the accidents and I can say without a doubt, it absorbed so much energy that I didn't feel a thing. I was spun 180 in the street after the hit as well. I can say I was pleased with the safety, and if and when this truck is done and I need a new one, i wouldn't hesitate to go tundra again.

I agree they can always do better but for that case I also added a ranch hand front replacement bumper metal is about 1/4in thick and adds about 300lbs as well (for looks also)

My wife is super concerned about this since we have a new born. I am pretty disappointed in Toyota. All of my old toyotas have poor crash ratings and now this. Too bad the F-150 is the only truck to get a good rating.

    Then tell your wife this...
The average vehicle weighs 3400 lbs. Because of 1/2mv^2 you are much safer in a heavy truck.
Also tell her that the Tundra's only safety flaw is the high offset front test. The reason the Tundra did not do well is that test is not very old and Toyota has not redesigned specifically for that test yet.
The chances of.you hitting something like that specific test is very low.
    Good luck.

Thanks. I know a bit about physics and a crash is just one big ol physics equation. I and my passengers are extremely safe in my Tundra. That is a very important metric to me too.
One of these days when I have one too many beers I will share an article I wrote on what crash tests don't tell you, the magic of 43 mph and how two large regulatory agencies tell people how exact opposite viewpoints are correct.

To be honest, after getting in an accident in my Tundra, I don't think I would drive anything else. The F150 that hit a car into me, was obliterated. The F150 driver did walked away though his truck was probably totaled. The lady in the Honda civic was OK, though her airbags deployed. I drove another 170 miles home. The force of the impact bent the tow hitch and my bumper.

No vehicle is 100% safe. They could make one completely safe but we couldn't afford it and people wouldn't want to crawl over a roll cage and wear a helmet and a HANS device.
With that said, you can throw out all of the 5 star rated vehicles if they crash into a vehicle heavier than them.
    Mass matters.

So my brother had a lifted up f250 and he was going down the hwy way and this car going the opposite direction crashed into him head on. Lucky the truck had enough size that he ran over the over car. Obviously the undercarriage was gone but my brother was fine. Bigger is better in alot of situations. The guy in the car was on a suicide mission and shot himself before the collision.
