I am wondering if y'all think they will try to repair my truck or totall it out?

I was following a friend down a road with speed humps. He was talking them a little aggressive not slowing down much. I was on a call and looked at my radio to end the call (not using my steering wheel controls.......) when I looked up he was almost completely stopped. There was a car in front of him going over the speed humps at a much slower pace. Needless to say when I looked up I had no time to slow down enough. Boom.

I really appreciate anyone's input, thoughts or experiences about this. Just wondering what will be of my truck after this.

Ouch! And if the airbags DIDN'T deploy, I wouldn't trust them to EVER deploy.

No, the airbags did not deploy. So you think I should take radio and things I have in out? The truck will still run and drive

Well my guess then is it will be fixed. That was an expensive phone call though. Glad everyone is okay!

    Company/state dependent

Kerp in mind certain states MUST total a vehicle if certain criteria are met (in example repairs are 70% of NADA).

Personally - I think you are looking at a 10k repair or so ballpark - as high as 15 depending on what is damaged. If I offered you 15k for that truck would you be happy - if so, get it fixed and I bet you still have a line of cash buyers at 15.

So knowing it’s “economic” to repair - you can be sure most companies will want to fix. As to will it be as good as before - I’m leaning yes with the * of I have not seen everything in person. I don’t think issues are likely on a truck exhibiting damages like this. A lot of bolt on sheet metal and bumper, a core support and rad/condenser and possibly the fan. Not “minor” - but not severe either and nothing that would make me say I wouldn’t own it.

It’s a 2014 - not a 2021….soon to be 8 years old. Rule of thumb is a vehicle useful life is 10-12 years. Yes, Tundras last forever and trucks 12 years old are just getting broken in it feels - but not personally would have 0 issue with taking it back with those parts replaced.

Frame ends can be repaired and not f it hit high - should be fine. I’d hope to keep it and if they insist on total - fight for every cent in value or tell them fix it.

Same damage happened to my 08 and they totaled it out was about 10k in damages. Mine still started up and ran but obviously radiator and coolant leaked. Granted I had 200k miles. Who’s your insurance provider? They may give you value for upgrades but likely not much. Don’t take what they first give you. I had to battle my insurance company farmers for months before we settled. I paid for extra coverage for the mods and they nickel and dimed me non stop. Needless to say farmers sucks. They started at 13,500 and I got them to 19,500.

With such a high hit you may not have tweaked your frame. If there’s no frame damage I think there’s a chance they might fix it. It does all depends on numbers though. With values so high, insurance companies may be more motivated to fix than cut a check for the total loss. Hard to say for sure though…

I'd say repair it. Hopefully your insurance is decent!

This type of thing is also why I'm putting a steel bumper on the front of mine. Cheap insurance IMHO.

There is no substitute for eyes on the road, and keeping the eyes moving is critical. Reaction can be faster if your eyes are moving.

    You are 100% correct.

That said, there are cases where things are beyond your control ... and there's a whole lot of expensive stuff up front that mashes far too easily!

    Good luck OP

Depending on what mods you have on a vehicle - I strongly recommend looking into insurance on those add on’s for someone putting more than a thousand bucks into any vehicle (truck, car bike whatever).

Most policies give you a grand free- but beyond that it gets tricky FAST. Take a lift kit - if you rely on an insurance valuation with no supports for cost or install date (just obvious it’s there) - it might add anywhere from nothing to $200 to value. With receipts - 30-85% of the cost…but again subject to a limit usually.

Adding on that additional parts/custom coverage gets you 100% of the cost paid back if totaled and cost relatively little with many carriers. I think I pay $40 for 5k a year - sure, I could pull things off and transfer/resell them - but for $40 a year, it’s a cost I’ll absorb. I’d have that much in replacing bolts and fasteners probably.

Also - just a reminder when it comes down to a total loss situation. You don’t have to accept the presented value as “final” - but being prepared helps a ton.

Finding a higher price elsewhere for something isn’t the best tactic - first records/receipts are your friend. Remember the valuation is based on several factors - some like year/model/options/mileage are black and white others like condition are highly subjective. What’s the difference between an “average” wear truck drive train and a “well maintained” one - could be several hundred/thousands - of course just looking at a truck sitting - I have no way of knowing the transmission/engine are better than typical - but a book of records/fluid changes tells me that. Body/interior are more obvious - but again not everyone creating that valuation is entering info correctly - don’t be afraid to ask why they call a super clean body “average” - especially if it’s 5 years or older….yes, an average 2020-2020 is going to be pretty clean. The average 2014 though is not a guaranteed clean car though.

Finally, do t expect the insurance to do the homework to help you or expect to just negotiate your way. It doesn’t work like that - to negotiate effectively - you have to have something the other side wants. In cases of a total - you have a wrecked car, so they hold all the cards so to speak. It’s up to you to prove them wrong - not the on them to make you happy.

Liberty mutual and progressive were both great with custom add ons. Farmers sucks. First hand experience. They gave me full value when things got damaged. Farmers nickel and dimed me to where I threatened law suit and 3rd party evaluation. Keep your receipts

    Sorry about your truck bud.

I'd fix it, but I get emotionally attached to vehicles.

And I'm hoping my ranch hand bumper will help me in instances like that.

If only our truck frames were built like our bumpers! I can remember when cars had stronger frames than this crap. Miss yesteryears so much!!

    It'll be repaired.

Let me guess, you were not wearing your seat belt?

Air bags won't deploy if you are not belted.

Not judging, just stating an assumption.

Always wear my seat belt. Just looked down and cause an accident. Definitely a learning moment for me. Will never look at anything again while I am driving. It is not worth it. Lucky no one was injured but this could have been much worse. Things can happen in a blink of an eye.
