Hi there, new to the forum and I just got my 2019 Tundra SR5 today! One of the things that struck me was the sound of the V8. I've been in many trucks before (GM, Ford, etc) but this V8 seems to be really loud. Is this common or am I just not use to Toyotas? When accelerating the engine noise is very noticible and I needed to turn my music up way high to cover the noise. Its something I can get used to but I was just wondering if there's anyway to silence it just a bit. I'm all for a loud V8 but since this is my daily driver I sometimes would want a little peace and quiet haha. Maybe its because its a new truck on a cold day? Appreciate any input!

    Cheers,
    Victor

Normal. Our trucks may not have the most horsepower or torque anymore, but they got the biggest balls.

Did you get a 19 or a 17? Your signature says 2017. If it’s a used truck check for an aftermarket intake or filter and exhaust.

My mistake, its a 2017 but its brand new from the dealer lot. They haven't sold it for 2 years. I'll post some pictures later but I think its the fact that its blue haha (It was a "demo" unit sitting in the showroom). I was shocked to hear the sound when I turned the key, really has a V8 rumble, I'm just not sure if hearing it everyday for 5 hours is going to be too much, the seals on the doors also seem to be a reason...not as sound deadening as other trucks.

If it has stock exhaust you won't hear much at all. Maybe they threw on the Pro exhaust.

I don't feel my engine is loud, but I came from a Tacoma with a TRD intake and TRD exhaust. Cars before that.

Test drive some other Tundras on a day off to compare.

    Welcome from PA.

The 5.7 is has 4 overhead cams (quad cammer), and under acceleration the valvetrain makes a lot of noise; much like that of an engine with solid lifters. I personally like the sound. You will notice it more when the engine is cold and not up to operating temp. If you want to quiet it just a little, use 5w-20 full synthetic instead of 0w-20. Will do no harm.

I've read a lot around here that the truck severely needs more sound dampening material like dynamat. Personally, I love the way it sounds. I recently added a dirty deeds exhaust to make it even louder haha, but its still super quiet on the highway.

I'm very glad the military gave me bilateral hearing loss and severe tinnitus because I cant hear shit so my Tundra sounds quite as a rabbit blowing a mouse in the middle of a forrest!

My Tundra has TRD dual exhaust and I have the pedal to the metal 99.9% of the time, so yes nice and quite here!

I actually turn down the radio to hear the engine because it is just too awesome to describe the wonderful note that the 5.7L Roars into your ears. It also has the :benchpress:to go with that sound

Went from a 1st gen 4.7 (nice exhaust sound, pretty quiet motor) to a 5.3 Suburban (awesome factory exhaust, very quiet engine) to a '17 5.7 Tundra.

Tundra motor itself sounds like shit. Sounds more like a diesel than a buddies Duramax.

    Factory exhaust sound is forgettable.

Pro exhaust sound is nice but not as good as the factory system on the 13 Suburban I had.

you may be the first person wanting to silence the mild roar tunes. most want to add exhausts to make it louder and achieve 0-60 in 900 decibels.

you will get used to it quick and find the roar enjoyable. on a cold morning it is prolonged as it warms up but simmers down quick.

    enjoy.

Did you check to see if you have an exhaust pipe coming out both sides of the truck in the rear? Mine are sweet music to my ears.

That startup 'roar' is the damn fan, not some mechanical display of power. It's awful.

It’s awful because a fan is engaged when you start the truck? Lol. Although the OP is talking about engine noise in general.

The 5.7L produces a mechanical symphony... I removed the engine cover and that foam sound insulation so I can hear more sound from the engine.

These are just pics from when I was at the dealer but its all I have right now haha, still on the showroom floor (I'll get some better ones later). I checked and the exhaust is stock. Not trying to be a whiny d*** but coming from a 2015 Silverado this engine does sound a lot like a diesel  especially when I'm hammering it merging on the freeway. It might be the fan noise as someone stated earlier or it may the the engine rumble or it may be the exhaust, or given that it was really cold (-18), its basically the loudest truck I've been in to date. I'm sure I'll get used to it soon!

The truck is a pretty stock 2017 Tundra SR5 CrewCab nothing special. Got the sliding rear glass I really liked and has got all the 4wd and towing gizmos.
Can anyone tell me what is under the big ass hump below the rear seat? I don't mind it but it seems like a waste of space lol. The blue is actually growing on me, might black out the chrome later on and see how that looks. I didn't buy the TRD Off-road package because I got a wicked good deal on this one ($38 000 CAD) but when this shock gets old I'll throw some Bilsteins on there.

Exactly what I was thinking, when I was on the test drive, the start up noise made me jump a little because I wasn't expecting such a sound lol. Everything is worth the reliability though. I was going to get another Chevy (don't shoot) but after their latest Electric Steering Recall that was it. Seems like a safety hazard especially when I'm on 2 lane freeways at night next to fully loaded semis. I had a 2500 Duramax and that thing was a tank (can't say the same about modern Chevys with their fuel saving gizmos.

I know the tundras are loud, but I’m just having a hard time believing the truck the OP bought is that friggin loud fully stock? A roar like a clapped out Powerstroke? I recall test driving mine when it was bone stock and also coming from a Tacoma I could hear it, but it didn’t seem anything out of the ordinary, if not quieter than my 17 Tacoma. Maybe there’s a reason it is still sitting on the showroom floor after 2 years!

All aluminum motor. You’re going to hear more resonance and engine noise as a result.

I also noticed this I have a 2019 just got brand new and sometimes standing by the front hood it sounds similar to a diesel. I'm like you, not sure if its normal but looks like it is normal.
