I have a 2015 Tundra 5.7 and ever since I bought it two years ago it has made this clicking/diesel truck sounding noise. I've searched this forum and I've seen some threads that say this is normal but I have a real hard time believing this sound is normal. I've taken it to the dealer three times and each time they say they can't replicate it, which I also find hard to believe because it now makes this noise 75% of the time. This video I've uploaded to youtube is old but I can't figure out how to upload a newer one. The noise is much louder now. Do you guys think this sound is normal?

My '14 sounds nothing like that so I'd say not normal

Does it change with RPM? Sounds “tinny” like heat shield or something as opposed to a knockin’ motor.

No its just a constant noise that's intermittent. A buddy of mine seems to think it's an EGR valve.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
Is it for sure from the engine bay?

Given the 'tinging' sound, makes me think it's a loose heat shield or factory skid plate? :notsure:

I had a truck that made it sound like that and it was the pre-cat falling apart until it finally fell into the catalytic converter. But it was quite a few years older than your truck is right now. I would check the heat shields as others have said.

Also the dealer says they can’t replicate it is a total cop out. I hate that they do that. My passenger window clicks a little when rolled down a few inches going over rough roads. They had my truck for three hours. Saw them driving it around. Came back and said they couldn’t replicate it. Bullshit! They freaking drove it to get lunch for themselves while joy riding. I should’ve made them go for a ride along with me

I say take your truck back to the dealer and request to be standing there while the mechanic looks at it.

LOL! I guess that would mean it’s constantly intermittent? Like the noise is reliable enough that it will be there most times consistently ha ha ha ha

Sounds like a heat shield on a cat to me. When they're not tight they'll often have a rattle noise like this at certain engine speeds and it'll sometimes change with temperature. Toyota shields usually have a couple bolts holding the shield halves together. I've had luck with either putting a slight bend in one or adding washers to space them apart.

There's shields on the headers too so it might be up there. Maybe tap on each heat shield when cold with a wood dowel. That will usually show which one it is straight away.

Came to post that it sounds like a heat shield. On my 2010 4Runner, a heat shield gradually came loose and made a very similar sound. It started sort of quiet and as time went on, got louder as the shield got looser.

@UserNameTaken . I have a 2019 with 5k miles now. I bought it brand new. I have the same noise . Its a light diesel clicking noise. Most people don't hear it , but I do because I'm OCD. Welcome to the OCD club . I only hear it when I'm looking for it.

Agree. I also had a failing catalytic converter that sounded very much like that.

OK, yeah I see how that doesn't make much sense, lol. What I mean is that it doesn't make that sound all of the time, but when it does it doesn't change with the rpms. It sort of comes on softly then gets louder.

I agree. I had it there yesterday and explained the problem. I also had them change the oil. They called me 45 minutes after I dropped it off and said they couldn't hear it. When I went to get it I walked out, started it up, and let it run for 30 seconds before it started making the noise. When the service advisor heard it he was "oh, there it is". He told me they let it run for 20 minutes, bullshit. Then he tells me his techs are at lunch from 11am-1pm. Bullshit, a national chain dealership isn't going to close their shop for 2 hours. I'm gonna call the service manager on Monday and see if they can't straighten this out. They really hate bad reviews to Toyota.

On my 2019, when it does make the noise, its only on idle. If I slightly press the gas to increase RPM just slightly, it goes away . It's only sometimes and only on idle

I don't mean to beat the heat shield theory to death, but when I had a heat shield go on my 4Runner, it was sort of like that at first as well. I'd only hear the noise a little, and it was always worst while idling. As time went on and the shield got looser, the noise was louder and more frequent, but at certain RPMs would shut up. After things got bad enough, the shield was removed completely. The truck ran fine after that, it didn't make any difference.

I did some more youtube research and my engine sounds exactly like this. I would guess it's the timing chain tensioner. I wouldn't think I would have this problem on a 15' with 55k miles.

I have the same noise with my 2013 Tundra! Just drove my truck at it started when I stopped at a red light. Sometimes it happens when I start it but mostly at idle after I drive it somewhere. I have been under the truck looking for loose heat shield but the noise isn’t coming from there. Definitely an engine noise, especially when I lift the hood. I would bet it’s a chain tensioner.

Hey! My 2011 makes the same noise! Did anyone ever conclude whether or not it is indeed the cam chain tensioner and or guides?

The noise was worse when I was using 5W-20. It became much less frequent when I switched to 0W-20. Also, the noise is more prevalent when the ambient temperatures are lower, so I always concluded that thinner oil helped.

O.K. After looking through those posts I can see this is indeed a common issue.
