So I know that the Tundra Crew Max is only offered with a 5.5’ bed. Why isn’t it offered with a 6.5’ bed?

If you look at the overall dimensions of a double cab with long box, it has a 247.8” length and a 164.6’ wheelbase. The crewmax has a 228.9” length and a 145.7” wheelbase.

Can anyone explain why they couldn’t just use the frame of the double cab with the crewmax to give us a 6.5’ bed and a couple extra inches of legroom in the cab?

Or is it just because they don’t want to do it?

Look man, shopping for a truck was hard enough... the last thing I needed was more options...

I imagine it has to do with sales numbers. I don’t think many people buy that configuration. I see a few F-150s around every now and then that are like that, but other than that it doesn’t seem very popular to have the crew cab with a 6.5’ bed. I would buy it, but for the most part it’s not a highly sought after option. Probably not worth it to them to invest in making it.

They offer RCSB and sell very few. They would sell every CM with a 6.5' bed that that they could make. So many here have had to decide....more cabin space or larger bed. CM with 6.5 ft bed.............Problem solved

Call me weird but I wouldn't buy one. I had a F150 Supercrew with a 6.5' box. That thing was a like a fuckin' VLCC. Way too long, especially on the backroads and in parking lots. I also never hauled anything remotely large enough to fill the box. Anytime I haul anything big, I put it on a trailer. If it's too big for a short box, it's probably too big and awkward to manhandle out of a truck bed.

I still stand by my previous post. If Toyota put into production a CM 6.5ft.....they'd sell all of them. Waiting lister....

But we are already Toyota people. They'd have tp put that truck up against crew cab long bed trucks that are usually a diesel, F-250/2500 Silverado.

Does Ford or Chevy make a long bed F-150/1500?

A couple of you are confusing the OP's request . He asked for a 6.5 ft bed on a crew max, not an 8 ft bed(long bed)

    Exactly
We are talking about a not much longer wheel base. If you go back a few years the big two had very similar configurations. Ford and Chevy actually. We used them getting to the logging landings . We'd all pile in. Toss the saws, gas, and boots in the bed. They were called Crummies for good reason. You had choice of 6 or 8 foot beds. These GAS powered trucks in that configuration had zero issues dealing with Oregon logging roads. Good ole days. Toyota can do it. Not a big difference at all from current configuration.

I bought my DC because it came with a 6.5 ft. bed. Much easier to haul lumber, plywood, etc. with the tailgate down. I recently bought a brand new Honda weed whacker and the box was exaclty 6.5 ft. long. I would've had to lower the tailgate or have it rest on the closed tailgate. Another reason for the DC is it is just me and my wife, no family to haul around. But plenty of room if I do bring my three adult kids along.

My only whine is the bed is deeper than my '06. If I drop anything small into the bed I need to climb in from the tailgate to get it. I just need to be taller I guess...

    It's all good.

I still would not be able to get my twelve foot boards in bed any easier with a 6.5’ bed. A263F2EA-13C0-41BE-92B7-4560DB454A4B.jpg Should have took the wifeys Sienna. Peace. D

I'm unsure how the new 2018 tax laws will affect this , but trucks used for business were eligible for vastly accelerated depreciation under IRS Section 179 -- but if and only if, the bed was at least 6.0 feet long.
Less than 6.0' and you could still get the "heavy" SUV depreciation rate, but it was no where near as favorable.
IIRC, in some years, Sec 179 let you write-off the entire purchase price in the 1st year !! Business vs personal had had some kind of prorating.
The difference between 5.5 and 6.0 seems stupid ... that 6 inches could have saved lot of $$ in taxes.

I wanted more bed with my truck, plus IMO the double cab is pretty damn big. I was shopping used and HATED the 07-14 Chevy/GMC extended cabs with the suicide doors and very tight back seat. Looked at crew cab GM trucks, they had a lot more room in the cab but a shorter bed. The Double Cab Tundra has the normal sized bed, almost the same room as a crew cab GM truck and IMO the best part, conventional doors for the back seat.

The Crew Max cab was like long wheelbase Town Car type of room in the rear seat, I don't haul people all the time in my truck and found it a bit silly since you could only get the shorter bed. Really wish the roll down rear window came with the double cab models too though.

I love woodies.................. when you're done laughing, I'll continue. My BIL had a 40 something Ford beautifully restored. We have woodies on the wharf here in Santa Cruz every year....... Some BA cars. Those things are going for well over $100K these days.
Did you know the wood for these cars was originally from crates? It was WWII and metal was short so the shipping crates were used to build the cars.

I'm a woodworker, raised in Santa Cruz so I made my own hollow long board out of Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Mirrasou Wine Tank Redwood. I've got $600 worth of Balsa wood beams that I bought to make the next one.

I prefer the 6.5 foot bed for 16 footers. But it really depends on what you need more the bed space or the cab space.

It’s my own opinion it would look goofy unless you did a serious lift with large tires.

GM, Ram and Ford 100% still have Crew Cab with 6.5' box in their half tons, but people who want them usually have to special order them because if any ever make it onto the lot they disappear before the transport hauling them leaves the yard. Even if Toyota made it a little more expensive I 100% for sure would buy one.

I know that if they made a CM with the 6.5' bed I would look into it when I was ready to get a new truck. I love the 6.5 on my DC, but would like to have a little more room in the cab, as my boys 3 and 5, get older.

They’ll need to step up the payload capacity. Most contractors that really could benefit from bigger beds would also like to have the assurance of better/increased capacity in payload.

How hard can that be??? Just put some stiffer springs/shocks in the rear. Maybe more leafs in the springs. Yeah it might ride worse, but its a truck made to do work.

Also the Tundra is so freaking huge, its actually a little bit bigger than 1/2 tons from Chevy/Ford/Ram, I could see it being uprated to 3/4 ton payload/towing with the right suspension/axles/brakes, keep the frame/body/engines the same.

I know that strategy hasn't worked with Nissan, but IMO they are producing a junk quality truck. If Toyota were to do this, it damn well better match/exceed 3/4 ton domestic offerings. I know the big draw on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are the crazy diesel engines, and Toyota doesn't really have anything like that.

IMO that's the one great engineering challenge Toyota really needs to conquer, as all the emission controls have really raised the expense and frequency of repairs for these 2007+ diesel engines, Toyota needs to figure out a way to make a modern heavy duty diesel that is stone dead reliable for half a million miles and can match the power figures of the big 3 diesel offerings.

The profit margin on pickup trucks is pretty obscene, and I don't see that changing over the next 10 years. Regulations in the US are favorable for big trucks, not so much for cars. I think there is a gap there for Toyota to enter the market, as I've seen/heard numerous tales of these emissions era diesel trucks having stuff like their cat converters, urea injection system, all the pollution controls crap out and cost thousands of dollars to fix. A lot of guys just delete that crap and tune their trucks to run without it, if their local laws allow it.

I hope the 4th gen Tundra has the CM with a 6.5' bed option. I actually could see it happening. The 3rd gen Tacoma offers a TRD off road with a long bed (6' 2"). Never before did they have that option. If they are listening to tundra enthusiasts they will offer that on the 4th gen.
