My SIL just got a Jeep Wrangler and the backup display blows away the Tundra when it comes to picture quality.

That’s because jeeps got a make up for reliability on everything else. That way when you get in that piece of shit you go, wow that’s a nice fucking display! It’s a diversion tactic to distract you. Maybe Toyota got that one part from China Lol. For me it’s good enough to get the job done. The quality could be better but it’s clear enough for me to get really close to whatever I need to. I know it made hooking up a trailer by yourself the easiest trailer hooking up I’ve ever done.

Yes Tundra needs to level up the electronics game big time. I still prefer not asking for rides because my car is in the shop so I am not going to complain much.

My backup display in the rear view mirror is good quality. Better than my wifes 4Runner.

I like how my wifes highlander front cam/birds eye both display when forward motion is at 5mph or below. Phoenix just recently came out with a 360° view for the tundra ($180) but im out of time to try it now.

Jeeps have to have high quality backup cameras because the spend a lot of time in reverse when the are offroading when they can't make up the hill or thru the mud.

My gf drives a 2014 Ford Escape and my trucks back up camera is hands down better and clearer than hers. Hers is almost hard to use it's so blurry.

I just figured it was 4 years of tech advancement. I imagine little things like that are improving every year and it just depends what year the manufacture switches the part.

    All speculation on my part

I had a 2013 Kia Optima and wife drives a 2015 Sorento - They've got it as far as reasonably priced cars with awesome tech goes. We shopped around and Kia felt light years ahead of ford, chevy, nissan, for similar cars at the time... cheaper too. may still be that way. I'm not in that market at the moment!

I was just surprised when i started looking at trucks: nothing compared to my mid tier Kias... You've gotta spend 60k for electronic seats with memory positions / leather / cooled seats? shiiittt.... lol

Right? I actually downgraded with my truck. My optima was loaded: panoramic moonroof, leather, front and rear heated / cooled seats, remote start, blind spot monitor, heated steering wheel...and more. I love the tundra, though, minus filling up every week.

I think fuel range is the same... tundra just holds 400% more haha

On the same page with the down grade... I’ll probably own an optima again... with the tundra lol

The camera that is our Tundra and our previously owned IS 350 is far better than the 80K BMW that replaced the Lexus and BMW will openly admit their cameras suck. I have zero issue with the camera as far as picture quality and it's functionality and it's ability to put me right where I want to be when backing up.

It has a lot to do with display resolution on factory HU. I have changed the HU to android HU and it looks far better w the same camera.

I have noticed the same about the picture quality the other day. I wanted to clean the driveway so backed my Tundra, Camry and wife's Prius out of the driveway. Tundra and Camry is about the same, and then the Prius was like Ultra HD vibrant compared to that; enough to make me go back and see if the others were dirty or something, but they were not. I guess the American assembled Tundra and Camry does not have the same camera quality as the Japanese assembled Prius. All 3 have the same/similar Entune trim level.

My 2014 Tacoma had a better backup camera than my 2018 Tundra. The Tundra provides an inaccurate perspective of where the corners of your vehicle are in relation to what's behind you.

I had a 2017 Ram which I traded in for a 2018 Tundra. The camera in the Ram was far more better quality than my Tundra. I tweaked the settings for the camera in the menu and got a little more better image quality. I guess I got used to it by now because the camera display looks pretty damn good now.

that is what I figured the SIL has the factory Alpine HU. The one in my Tundra works perfectly fine for what I need it for.

better image quality would be nice, but i hardly ever use the head unit... certainly not enough to pay for a new one or go through the headache of swapping it out. It works well enough for what I do. A better one stock (with the nav packages) would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker for me (obviously).

I noticed that too but then realized that the camera has to be offset because of the tailgate handle

Same here. It works great for what it is intended for, safely backing up. I don't need to read a newspaper 20ft away with this thing.

After 45 years of driving vehicles (starting with a well used 1964 Ford Falcon wagon) with no such thing as a backup camera, the one on my 2018 Tundra is golden.

Safely backing up means checking your mirrors and watching for cross traffic, not gluing your eyes to the backup camera and stepping on the gas! Lol

Not saying that’s you... my wife can’t back in for shit, WITH the backup camera on her car (Kia sorento, much better display than ours) AND the proximity sensors. I love the woman, but when she parks one side of the car right up against the shelves, she gets to pull the kid out on that side of the car, I’m not messing with it. You want my help park more toward the middle - she’s got a car and a half’s worth of width haha

Sounds like you’re more like me - check it to make sure there’s no bikes or kids then primarily use the mirrors. I haven’t hooked the tundra up to a trailer yet, but I’m sure it’d be super handy for that.

I don’t have near the driving experience you do (only about 15 years or so) but I still largely follow the habits my father taught me in his extended cab extended bed F250...
