Here's a new issue I got to come across this morning when trying to leave for work...

    2020 Tundra TRD Sport

    Scenario:
It's pretty cold out this morning and I remote started the truck. Went to leave and put my hand in the door expecting it to shut off. Truck stayed running and unlocked the doors. So I got in pressed the brake pedal and start button (like almost every other car that remote starts without auto shutting off). Truck turns off. I try to restart it and dash lights all come on except HVAC and says "Ignition On" but the truck wont actually start upon the second push of the start button. HVAC could not be changed either.

Sounds like there was a glitch in it. I let it sit for around 5-10 minutes while I went inside to tell my wife I was taking her car. She works second shift as a nurse so when she wakes up, she's going to see if it'll start.

Anyone run into this? I'm curious if after sitting for some time, it'll reset itself or maybe disconnecting the battery will help.

    Thanks in advance

sounds like a lil glitch. try disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes to see if it can reset it. then test again after seeing if it'll at least start.

Very similar happened to me once. I tried almost everything. Locking manually, with the fob. Remote starting it again. Couldn’t get it to go. Went to get tools to disconnect the battery and thought what the hell and tried it one more time and it started up just fine. This was in October. And I also have a 2020.

I've had 3 different Limited 5th gen 4runners. These have had the push button starting for a long time. (My 2019 TRD Pro Tundra has regular key...)

I've noticed that the push button system has a tendency to get itself wound up as you describe. Most of the time I've experienced it is when I was in a huge hurry and was moving faster than the system could respond. A combination of brake pedal, key recognition, and pushing the button. If that is out of order or done too quickly it seems like the system gets stuck and you have to start over.

Just read through that thread. Exact issues as everyone else. Especially the last comment regarding the brake pedal hard as a rock.

After reading through, sounds like when the truck does not shut off when opening the door, the truck is still in remote start mode. Even if it's been shut down. So it's either waiting out the full 15 minutes from original startup for remote start to reset or disconnect the battery.

I guess the good news is that I'm not experiencing an isolated issue and my wife will have a vehicle to get to her appointment this afternoon with.

I'll report back when she goes to start it up to confirm it's resolved.

    Thank you everyone!

    Update:

Well the wife just called, I was on the phone with her and the truck won't start. She said it's "stuck in Accessory Mode"

I'll try and reset the battery and see if that fixes it.

Same exact thing happened to me this morning, 2020 sport. I had to get a ride to and from work. Mine has been to the dealer for this issue and “we can’t replicate the problem”. It’s going back Monday.

That's terrible. What the hell is wrong with a simple key mechanism again? We just have to push a damn button to start a car?

It’s 2022 and keyless is more convenient. Minus the random times it fails us.

I’m going to remote start it tomorrow morning and see if history repeats itself. That will help to determine if it was an isolated incident or potential issue.

I know it’s not the same, it my wife’s Kia kinda does the same thing. I have to hit the start button on and off and lock unlock the doors , while actually opening the drivers door to reset it.

    @Jaypown. I'd say random. Haven't figured out a pattern.
Basically, i have to step on the brake , PTS to shutoff the car (sometimes this takes a few tries), open the door, shut it, lock/unlock, open the door, shut it, push the start button then start the car.

It's a lot of steps but it only takes like 8 seconds.

basically just trying to get it back to the same position as if it were sitting there locked in the driveway and I get in it to start it.

So my truck went to the dealer and spent a few days there, of course never repeating the issue. I sent a video I took when it happened the last time to the dealer as well.

Dealer told me that they had no idea and called “the engineers in texas”. Apparently if you don’t re-up your Toyota app ($80.00 a year) this is the end result….potential issues with remote start usage.

This sounds exactly like the issue I had on my 2019, thread right below this one. Makes sense that it may have been in remote start mode. I removed my remote start, you guys can’t. Weird weird issue.

Could the issue be related to the “rock hard brake” issue? Not being able to depress the brake far enough to trigger the brake switch? Just a thought.

Yeah I didn't reup my app. Thats a very possible thing. Especially since everything is computer driven with software.

At least for me, We didn't have an issue with the rock hard brake until after the issue started.

I think the real issue is that when you use remote start, the truck doesn't recognize when you're getting into it for it to shut off.

I don't use remote start often, even in this cold Ohio weather lol

Did anyone ever find an actual solution to this? I have a 2020 trd pro sequoia with a similar issue, although I don’t use remote start. Several weeks ago, when I was in a hurry, I got in and cranked my car. Engine didn’t turn but the entire dash acted like I was up and running with the “ignition on” message. Rick hard brake. After several minutes it must have reset bc I was good to go. I’ve made a point to go thru the ignition sequence slowly since then. But it has randomly happened even then. I know taking it to the dealer won’t matter if they can’t replicate the issue, but I’m terrified that it’s gonna happen when I’m by myself.

For me it was the fuel pump. Dealer would not replace anything until they could replicate it, thank god it finally happened at the dealer.

I had my battery tested and it was bad. Replaced the battery (warranty covered at the time) and no problems since.

They tried to tell me my battery was bad. I asked exactly what the test said, turns out it passed the test but “barely”. Also the battery was not covered under the platinum warranty. I’m still using the same battery, works fine. They were just full of shit.

I test my batteries all the time, it’s still in good shape. They tested it after I had attempted to start the truck several dozen times. It was just their answer to the problem. Once they actually re created the no start situation they no longer wanted to replace the battery.

Oh nevermind. I went back and reread your post about the fuel pump. Makes sense now since they tried to tell you it barely passed. Yeah no point in replacing if it works completely fine.
