Went in for a simple oil change with my trustworthy local mechanic and I got a surprise. Shows me what they suspect is the rear main. Truck only has 25k on it. So I called toyota since they have done 2 oil changes on it (freebies) and I went in to see a service guy. I was alittle pissed that this is the first time I’m hearing of this. IM sure the Toyota tech that did my last oil change had to of seen this. Anyways, Toyota doesn’t think it’s the rear main but maybe a seal in the bell housing or the camshaft. They put dye in the oil and are gonna crack her open in a week after I get some miles on it. Shit!!! Anyone have similar problems? 5234EB05-FC2E-407D-BD3B-D5D0331D52A6.jpg

Could be worse, could of been your cam towers leaking. Still sucks, truck only has 25k on it this is unacceptable.

They didn’t rule out the camshaft seal yet. I doubt it’s the towers cuz I’ve been looking and they’re still dry. We’ll see. I’m bummed but it will get fixed under warranty at least

I recall seeing a similar thread a while back. I'll take a search for it, but I'm pretty sure this has come up before.

Got the truck back today. They did the rear main seal. Thought everything was cool until I got home and heard an awful sound under the truck. Take a listen. Back to Toyota tomorrow!!!

Nevermind, can’t load my video clip.

Any ideas what the issue could be?

Yeah... I had the same problem... they “fixed “ it once... replacing the seal.. began leaking again. There was an issue with pins on the transmission or the block that weren’t set to the right depth. Once they seated them and put it all back together it was good to go.

Check out the thread quoted above

Got the call from the service guy. Turns out it was a bent heat shield that was touching the exhaust making the noise. Thank God. Hopefully the rear main is all good now and I can be happy again. I was about to go and buy a Dodge!!!

Crawled under the beast on Saturday and saw some oil near the “u” section of the housing. Just dropped it off again at Toyota. I got the “we’ll have to check with Toyota” answer on how to proceed. I told the service guy about the alignment pins specs and he thought that was interesting....let you guys know ASAP what’s going on. Obviously a problem on these trucks

It's a mechanical beast that we feed oil, gas, and exponential amounts oxygen depending on your bolt-ons. There is no problem. You are looking at results of known quantities of heat traded for fun and $$$. Act accordingly....

Our expectations may be different, but I do not expect my truck to leak for a very long time. I sold my 1st Gen with 200k and no leaks during my ownership.

Please post the outcome with dealer and Toyota.

I'm interested in knowing how they deal with this situation.

Man, oil and fluid leaks seem to be the Achilles heel of new Tundras. Amazing that Toyota screws that part up after building such awesome machines.

My Tundra is almost 18 years old and doesn't leak anywhere.

I'm with ya. The 5.7 motor is a beast. Europeans have a thing for oil leaks, and protecting their water supplies linked to leaks on the streets. Americans used to take it as a pride of ownership for some sort of leakers club......when the 5.7 was a GM engine. Toyota owners are better than that, KUDOS to you!

Got the call from the dealer. Couldn’t find a leak or any dye trail. They want me to put some more miles on it and monitor. So tired of driving to/from dealership and using rental cars!! The service tech said maybe the rear main seal finally seated after so many miles and heat...? I hope so cuz if not, I’ll be back!!!

That is a new one one me!! Never heard that a rear main can "seat itself". I would get another opinion.

I guess I should Have said that better. They resealed the rear main a couple weeks back. I would take it to my independent mechanic but this is all under warranty so I’m at their mercy

No problem man. It just sounded like they were trying to pull a fast one over on you.

I truly hope they have fixed the leak. I know I absolutely HATE any kind of leaks.

Update on my truck. So I crawled under the beast last week and still noticed oil on the bell housing. Brought it back again to the dealership (under warranty) and they finally found the dye trail which lead to the upper oil pan. Toyota technical told them to check that. Apparently they have had a “pitting” issue and leaks. Bummer is, they have to yank the motor to fix it. Only has 26k on it. I’ll be reaching out to Toyota customer care and reporting how un happy I am. For those of you that have complained to them, did they do anything for you? I almost want to ask for a new truck or deal somehow. Or am I just being paranoid and it’ll be all good. Thoughts?
