Driving home from DIA with my family yesterday and realized my truck (2012 limited)suddenly had no power/stalled. Pulled on to the shoulder and shut it off. Check engine and battery light came on. After 10 minutes I started it up and it drove fine. Took it to the dealer to check it out and they said it stalled 4 more times. thoughts?

I assume dealer still has it? Did they tell you what the CEL code was?

Yeah, left it at the dealer. They said the code just showed “stalled”.
We had to rent a car and then got stuck in a pile up at the tunnel for an hour and a half, great day.

Uhhhh........who know what code number = "stalled?"

    SMH.

I might replace the battery. Would also want to know miles on truck to contemplate the alternator brushes.

Where I work we have codes for tools that make our products. We use them for things like "normal production" and "down for maintenance". The names have been in use for decades. One of them is "gone to lunch". "Stalled" seems like someone just put it in there with the idea that it would be replaced later in the software design process. If the dealer can't figure it out I would get a OBDII scanner that can display data. If the fuel pump is cutting out or the pressure regulator is dying then there should be data. The O2 sensors will pick up (but it could be too quick between starting to happen and engine dying to throw a code) a lean condition. If there's a fuel pressure sensor that'll pick it up. Just throwing parts at it will get expensive as it could be a number of things that could cause it to stall.

Ask them what the check engine code was, not the description, but the actual number. If they won't provide that to you, then you should consider whether they are qualified to even work on your vehicle.

I'm guessing yep. I heard that there was a multiple car pileup yesterday because of snow/ice near the tunnel. Spring time in CO!

    Update.

Got a call that they can’t find anything wrong with it and I can pick it up. Drive the 2 hours back to Denver and pick it up. Decided to drive East on 70 for a little to make sure it’s okay. 10 minutes down the road a same thing happens again. Truck dies on the pecos off ramp. Try to restart it and it cranks but won’t start. Let it sit for a few minutes and it starts. Drive it a couple hundred yards and it dies again. Repeated this process for an hour and half until I got it back to the dealer. Drove back in my rental Corolla again.

I think it’s fuel related to some sort. Any new mods / work on it as of late?

Nothing, it’s been parked at the airport for the last week. It has 145k miles and has never given me a problem.

If it runs fine when it does run, I’m guessing it’s electrical.

Parked at DIA?! I don’t know about you but my truck has a locking after market gas cap. Like others have indicated it could be a fuel issue. Hopefully your fuel wasn’t tampered with since I know these tundras don’t have locking gas caps.

There was a pileup in the tunnel so they diverted to Hwy 6 which still had snow on it and then there was an accident on 6 and that got all clogged up. I-70 is evil.

Might be fuel starvation like from a bad fuel filter or line that is not quite fully clogged.

Is it sputtering to a stall or instantly cutout like someone shutoff the ignition?

Timing can do that, fuel pumps have a way of doing that, as do loose connections. Coil packs will do that when they get hot sometimes but usually you’ll get a misfire instead of a stall. Also, bad gas will do that as well. I would want to know what the fuel pressure is when it stalls out.

Are the dash lights still on and bright when it dies?

I can tell you that my GMC used to do this on the regular, from New. It turned out to be battery cables rotting from the inside out and causing a random bad ground scenario. It had all kinds of fun electrical problems related to that issue.

I too would be suspicious of a fuel system issue. Bad gas, water, condensation, fuel pump, clogged fuel line. But the intermittent/recurring aspect is weird.

The other bothersome aspect of your experience is that it really sounds like the dealership has been either incompetent or disinterested in solving your issue. Totally unacceptable. My understanding is that the Toyota corporation keeps tabs on dealership service and will follow through if one of its dealerships is half-assing it. A stalling vehicle is absolutely a big safety issue and there’s no excuse for a DEALERSHIP to be mailing it in. That’s BS.

I wish you luck and hope it gets solved pronto.

I upgraded my fuel pump with an aeromotive pump, when I bypassed the internal fuel filter and drained it all kinds of nasty stuff came out, I'm thinking either the pump is going bad or the internal filter is clogged. I wouldn't rule out electrical issues though.

It only stalls while driving it right? What are the odds you’re grounding out the pump when you hit a bump? Maybe, due to a loose wire or a wire that might be rubbing through to a metal component? I have had that happen before with an aeromotive pump until I cleaned up someone else’s wiring job.

I had a 1977 Fiat 131 that died on me occasionally for no obvious reason. It took me about 2 months to find the issue, it was a bad set of points (points, what are they???). I carried a multi meter with me and took various measurements every time it died and finally found the problem. Points - boy, do I feel old!

It just dies while driving it or if I stop at a light it will slowly sputter out and die. Also if I try to restart it immediately, it will crank for awhile but not turn over. After sitting for a few minutes it will fire right up.

Yeah, they told me they “spent a few hours on it and couldn’t reproduce the problem” ten minutes after driving away I could.
