Help me out! I want to change out the skid plate to make oil changes easy. I’m torn between the TRD Pro and RCI. I know the RCI steel is way cheaper but I think I will go aluminum (no rust, slightly lighter etc, etc.). So what are the advantages and disadvantages? Cool Springs has the TRD Pro for 390 and free shipping. RCI is about 425 plus shipping (for aluminum). Don’t do much off roading so y’all talk me into one or the other. If I had to trim the stock skid to fit my tires, will I need to trim the new skid? Is there a better option?

Get the RCI steel one and coat it with bedliner material.

If you don't do much off roading, the TRD definitely looks nicer. Can't speak for it's tire clearance because it's still an OEM part. Other members with it can provide that info.

I have the RCI steel powder coated, and it is solid. It was also designed with bigger tires in mind so you shouldn't have to trim or bend it. They do sales from time to time, so that can help with the cost.

RCI is 15% off right now with code: Taxtime

Get it! I have the powder coated steel one and love it.

You have any pictures of yours? I’ve been debating about the same thing (TRD vs. RCI).

Damn, that changes the game. Aluminum powder coated RCI is now $10 cheaper than trd pro. Is the only advantage for getting steel the strength for off roading? Dumb question, is the oem standard skid steel?

Nice! @PLC721 How big are your tires and did you have to trim the skid? I have 285/70/18.... not huge but still had to trim the factory skid to clear.

From RCI’s website, it looks like the aluminum powder coated plate is $415. By contrast, Toyota of Cool Springs is currently selling the TRD skid plate for $390 (link). You can get 20% off shipping using code “FORUM20”, but I thought I saw somewhere that they’re currently offering free shipping.

I love that look. Is the “TRD” lettering raised or indented in any way? Or is it just painted on?

Steel has better strength and impact toughness. If you're going to use aluminum make sure it's protected [paint/anodize] to prevent a galvanic cell against the steel frame.

Sorry, wasn't on for a bit. I see @GiantsFanDan hooked you up with RCI pics. I wound up doing their engine, trans, and tank skids, plus their rock sliders when they had 15% last year. It's good armor.

Steel is stronger for offroad, but aluminum is lighter. It just depends on what your needs are. I went steel for 2 reasons: first, I only have the one vehicle so maximum protection is good for peace of mind. Second, I cost less.
The standard "skid plate" is pretty thin, and pretty small. It is better than nothing, but it's not going to survive anything more than minor scrapes. It might be steel, but it is so flimsy that it might as well be made of plastic like the stock skid on the fuel tank.

    Not many yet, mostly stock.
I had the full set of RCI steel skids on my mall crawler from a GB two years ago. Fitment and power coating was great.
I Ended up selling all skids to @joonbug.
I’m pretty sure he like to challenge his equipment, and bought the steel RCIs for a good reason.(hav you seen his build?)
I’d buy steel if you’re serious wheeler. Aluminum for lite trails and mall crawlers.

Man, y’all have me leaning towards the RCI steel now. Even though I don’t off road hardly ever it’s good peace of mind. The price tag is a lot easier to swallow too. Guess really the only draw backs are potential rust and weight. I think I read somewhere the weight difference between steel RCI and trd pro is about 9lbs. Y’all sounds pretty confident in the powder coating that comes on the steel plus I live in South Carolina so I don’t have to worry about salt etc. too much as far as rust goes.

this may be one of those rare times where the forum saved me from spending more money than necessary:rofl::rofl:

Even though I don't have plans to go bashing it to pieces, I view a skid plate as a consumable/replaceable item for the truck. I've seen what a full size spare sitting in the middle of a lane on the interstate does when somebody doesn't dodge it (his dumb ass was tailgating and couldn't react in time), and I wanted as much protection from road debris as I did from rocks on a trail.

Amen to that! I dodged an alternator on I-5, but a new 7 series BMW wasn’t so lucky. I can still “feel” the thump and I was 4 car lengths away. He didn’t slow at all and looked like a Stanley-Steamer as he continued down the road.

You guys are a bad influence, just ordered the RCI Steel one $276 delv to Texas. I figure the money I've saved on gas lately why not, may need it to bug out to the wilderness.

Hey do you by any chance have a side shot of the front next to the front tow hooks? My bumper skid bolts to the tow hooks and I’m trying to find a picture to see if it sits flat with the frame.

The TRD plates look really nice and I should have got one when they had the 40% off. A few months later, RCI has a deal and I got the steel one for my 19 Platinum. It is a really nice piece and built very well. It is a lot heavier than stock. I am happy with the purchase and makes oil changes so much easier!
