Looking at selling my 2015 Tacoma and getting into a new Tundra double cab. Looking for more space both inside and in the bed, more towing capacity, and a more comfortable ride.

Looking at what's offered with the TRD Off-Road and Sport packages, none of it really seems that critical to my needs. I think going to the SR5 Upgrade package is likely as far as I need to go. My question is, do the TRD packages do that much better on resale that it may be worth going that route just for value retention down the line?

My first Tacoma (2007) was just an SR5. I kept it for 8 years, put about 112k miles on it, and I still sold it back to a dealership for about 50% of what I paid for it when I bought my 2015. When I got the 2015, I went with a TRD Off-Road. There are a handful of perks to that package that I like (nicer seats, nicer looking wheels), but frankly I didn't need that package. I don't off-road on trails, just around farm fields and that sort of thing. I almost never use any of the dozen traction modes. But I figured it may help with resale when the time came. Have yet to find out if that will have paid off.

Or, are there features in the TRD packages with the Tundras that are nice enough that it's really worth going the TRD route on that merit alone?

    Thanks

Just my .02 but I've got the TRD package and I don't think any of it is still on the truck. For folks who mod their trucks I don't think the TRD package makes a bit of difference?

I got the TRD package thinking that the only thing I would change was wheels. I have since removed everything that came in the TRD package except for the bedside decal (and this will be changed out in the future).

I would have been better off without the TRD package and then I would have had that $ for mods sooner.

Kind of ironic, the wheels from the TRD models are the only part of that package I'm sort of interested in, haha.

I don't tend to do a lot of modding to my vehicles. My 2007 Tacoma was pretty much still stock (with the exception of the shocks, and I also replaced the rear leafs but only because I had one break) when I sold it. 2015 is entirely stock.

What’s the price difference between a standard SR5 w/ upgrade and TRD in your area? In NorCal on Craigslist, you can find a “used” set of wheels and tires anywhere from $1100-$600, depending on tread depth/life.

Me personally, I went with the off-road package for my hunting and fishing excursions, nothing hardcore. I like the look of of wheels and I’ve really come to appreciate the Michelin’s included in the package too. Even if they’re plastic or a slim piece of metal, the skid plates that come with the TRD give me some peace of mind knowing I ain’t barebacking it when I’m off pavement.

go to kbb.com and run a pricing comparison. like any other car, the higher the "trims" the more you get. all the after market mods and stuff you add to the vehicle will only payoff on a private sale, come trade in time you will not recoup much of that investment. yes you can grab and SR5 or a base model work truck and add everything to it, however you cant change the vin number and invent a trim and call it a "platinum pro" or "TRD PRO" or "TRD ONRoad" as the vin will always tell you its a base model work grade truck and pricing will reflect accordingly.

Well worth the $0 on my 1794 (the 18s are definitely better than the 20s)

I liked the TRD wheels a lot better than the standard aluminum wheels so I kept them on for 2 years before I found a wheel that I liked better. Also, here in the CA Bay Area most of the SR5s (at the time) had the TRD package so there was not much choice.

If going for an SR5 I recommend the SR5 upgrade package - this will get you the 38 gal gas tank and bucket seats in front.

Yep, the 38 gallon gas tank is probably the biggest reason I want the upgrade package. Part of me actually kind of likes the idea of the bench seat with a fold down center, but I like the buckets too.

Poking around some local dealer lots, I've definitely noticed that non-TRD models are a little hard to come by.

The bench is nice for folks who need to fit six people. My wife's suv seats 7 so luckily I did not have this restriction. The 38 gal tank is great and I had the column shifter on my old Yukon and I like the shifter in the console a lot better. I think you will like whatever you end up getting - once you decide on a Tundra there is really no wrong answer.

True, 38 gal would be nice. There are enough guys on here posting window stickers that you can get a good idea what is included with each option package and roughly what they're going for. I know in my recent search I saw TRD Off-road for anywhere from $1800-$2400. I agree with these guys that it prob isn't worth it if you plan to modify wheels, skids, and shocks. If I'd have known then what I know now...

If you decide against getting TRD Off-road package, I'll be selling my TRD wheels in the next month or so. They have less than 300 miles on them and I have a 2018 odometer to prove it.

Short answer: you'll get a bit more for TRD at resale... but not more than you'll pay extra for it now.

    My opinions:
I drove an SR5 and an SR5 TRD before buying, and the TRD was much more comfortable. So... if you're a leave-it-stock kind of guy, and you said you don't plan to do more than incidental off-roading, I vote you get the TRD. There's no downside.

Plus, you said you like the TRD wheels. So do I. And I like the Michelin tires for all-around use. It makes no sense to me to get a truck with wheels and tires you don't like; there's a resell market for the TRD wheels and tires but not for the basic SR5 steel wheels.

The 38 gallon tank is ¡muy bueno!

In january I traded a 2016 tacoma trd offroad in on a 2018 tundra and 2 yrs old with 25k on it the dealer gave me 3k less than I paid for it new. All upgrades I had done to the tacoma they let me keep and sell. I hope the tundra holds its value like the tacoma.

I just traded in my 2016 4x4 Sport that literally had every option available. Loved that truck but with two little girls growing like weeds decided to see what I could find Tundr wise. I say pick the truck based on the options you want or need. I ended up buying a Tundra 4x4 Sport. I’ll be honest, I wanted the sunroof and heated seats that came in the limited and the price difference was non-existent between the limited and sport. Went with the sport simply because I hate chrome and didn’t want to deal with getting paint work done as I’ve always had bad luck in the past. I figured I could add heated seats later and would learn to live without a sunroof. I’m still second guessing my choice but feel reassured every time I see the truck. I do miss the hell out of my Tacoma and wish I could have kept it. I think I regret getting rid of the taco more than anything. I’ve only had the Tundra a few days so the wounds still fresh.

I won't say that I regret getting the TRD Sport, but in hind sight the SR5 with upgrade package would have been enough. I don't think I will get the money back that I paid extra for the Sport package when I trade it in. It is still a SR5 and when a buyer looks it up on KBB or similar they will look at SR5 value to begin with. I don't think the TRD Sport even shows up as an option on KBB or Black Book yet.
On the other hand, I picked the Sport because of the color matched grill and bumpers, so if I add the cost of that to do it myself then I am okay with spending the extra and I don't have to worry about getting it done myself later.
So, if you plan on changing suspension and wheels, there is no need to get a TRD package. If you will keep it stock, then the TRD package is nice to have and you might get a little better trade-in than base SR5.

When I bought my truck, I had two must haves (when looking at 4x4 crewmax): color matched trim and the 38 gallon tank. The Sport fit that bill perfectly. Told the dealer I wanted in either black or white. They found a black one first. No regrets.

I must be the only one who isn't so into the color matched bumpers. I actually prefer the chrome.

Same here, chrome bumpers, column shift and bench seat, BTW the "bench" seat in the Tundra is actually the same driver and passenger bucket seats the difference is only the center console.

Interesting, didn't realize that. That makes me lean a little more toward wanting the bench seat. I like the huge storage area in the center console, but I also feel like there's a lot of wasted space in front on the center console in the Tundra.

I wanted a pro.. just to say I had a pro... turns out your getting about a 10k dollar bed stamp... if your modding at all... get an sr5... if you gotta have leather... which was something I wanted, get a limited... I've spent 10k extra on my truck and I now have invested about what a stock pro would cost..

As far as packages go if the SR5 has what you want then there's not much reason to spend extra on the TRD packages, but definitely test drive all of them to find which one feels best to you as they all have different suspension that has it little differences. Some can be fixed with cheap mods (like the rear sway bar) other cost quite a bit (wheels). One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned is are you set on the double cab? As someone who really has no use for the extra cab (no kids or big dogs) and does have use for the 6.5' bed (quads) I would still recommend the Crewmax. That is where you will find a difference for resale - for me it was about $2.5k more for the CM over the DC (Canadian dolllars) and that would have been money I would have recouped easily upon resale. I thought the 6.5' bed was going to be crucial for me, but I've found that the extra foot to be less valuable than the extra cab space would have been.

There is a fair amount of storage in the center seat/console also. I am thinking of getting another one, I have a '10 CM with the "bench" seat and would get the same seating option, would really like the 38 gallon tank but not worth giving up the extra seating for me.

I'll definitely make a point of finding one with a bench seat to check out. I think the 38 gallon tank is the bigger priority to me though, so if it came down to one or the other, I'll probably go with the large tank.

I'm pretty well set on the double cab. I really want the 6.5' bed for sure.

I actually think the back seat of the double cab is fairly roomy. Though my Tacoma is an access cab so maybe I'm easily impressed with space. :)

It is very roomy for sure, but then there's the CM back seat. It is unlike anything else I've ever seen and the rear window is nice (understatement of the year maybe). It's not a mistake getting the double cab, but even though I haul around quads from time to time I'd get the CM if I had a do-over. The pluses can think of with the DC is the under-seat storage that is available, and standard on some trims, and there's more negotiating possible on DC since fewer people want them (but that hurts resale down the road).

What are your needs for the center console as far as space needs? I have the bucket seats/SR5 upgrade and feel the center console is huge, just my opinion though. The 38 gallon tank is the s^%* even if it’s not a “true” 38 gallons that’s available. My range runs anywhere from 475 to 525 miles depending upon the time of year. I can’t imagine putting more than a young child in that middle seat. Even then, if that happens, everyone else is gonna be squeezed. Just my two cents. I say you go for the upgrade pgk and enjoy a few extra miles between fill ups.
