Thought I would share this with everyone so they can check their CV axles. I took my Tundra in for the 500 mile inspection where they check all the bolts etc after installation and they called me to the service bay to show me where the driver side axle was throwing grease. My buddy who had is lift installed a week after mine also had his truck in there for the passenger side doing the same thing but his is much worse. I am including pictures for all to see. Luckily being Toyota parts everything is covered under warranty but they did say it was going to be about a week before the part comes in. Our service manager seems to think the clamp is pinching the seal and that is what is causing this but I am anxious to know if others are experiencing this same issue. 1st pic is my truck the 2nd is my buddies.

So this issue is on trucks that had the OEM TRD lift kit that was recently installed (or installed as part of the purchase) correct?

As part of that kit it had ‘longer axles’ if I recall?

So the techs had to R&R that part in order to put in the kit correct?

Could it just be during the process of installing (which varies per dealership ) that this happened?

My standard TRD OR (Red) axles are still solid with my Icon lift after about 2,000 miles (& 2 off road trips to AZ & Utah last month). I'm surprised to see this on the special/longer axles they include with the TRD lift. Might be a one-off issue/parts failure.

Your tech is likely right. The only way a CV axle will throw grease like that is: 1) Torn boot or 2) boot has slipped due to bad/damaged clamp.

Also...this might just be my eyes, but your CV angle in the top pic looks fairly aggressive. Might just be the angle of the pic.

My TRD Lift axles are good. Installed Sept 28 at 5272 miles, today at 9005 miles. Roughly 4k miles on current setup.

It was just odd that it happened on 2 trucks done at the same dealership so maybe it could have been done at install. So far no one else seems to be having this issue so I will keep everyone posted when they R&R it next week.

Purely a guess but maybe over tightening of the clamp? Curious to hear the outcome if they find out.

    @Paddockdrive

question: I'm curious if the front wheels/tires stick out any further than stock due to the extended CV axle? I understand that lifting would essentially "shorten" the stock CV due to angle (at least in theory it makes sense) but does the TRD extended CV actually cause the stance to be wider?

I'm trying to determine if a +18 offset will still sit as it would with the stock CV or will they essentially look more like a 0 offset with the new TRD lift CV?

I'm interested if 'poke' will remain unchanged.

Quick update they are replacing the axle today so I will post more when I see it off the truck. Took 2 weeks to get the part since they don’t ship from Toyota like normal stock.

@clrprop To the naked eye I don’t see a difference but I am posting some picks for you. Tires are a 285/65. My friend put a set of Fuel Assaults (20’s) with the same tire and a 0 offset but because of the 9” rim he has some poke. Hope this helps!

Check your angle of the cv joint at the wheel, if it’s to much the u-joint in the boot will cute a hole in the boot again

Will do. Funny thing is it was the clamp that comes on the boot in the kit that caused the puncture. Mine actually had quit throwing grease but we still replaced it.

Just had my kit (TRD OEM) installed and picked up today. Drove 30 miles home and have grease everywhere from passenger side cv axle. I will say, the kit rides well and I'm very please other than the fact that I now have to deal with this CV issue as other have mentioned.

Lift looks good. I see your angle is to much the only way to fix it is changing spindles. Good luck

@clrprop That is exactly what mine did. The clamp apparently pinches the cv axle boot and causes this or at least that is what caused mine and my buddies. His was the left front and it took about a week to get in the new part, mine was the left front and it was about a 2 week wait. Good news is after they replaced both of our and inspected the new axles prior to installation we are now good to go.

Good deal and yes the warranty is a plus. How long did they tell you before the part get there?

Did you his check to see if cv clamp is super tight were rubber is being pushed out from center of clamp ? Also check to see if it’s loose ? Try to rotate boot on cv
