Trd cai w/ afe dry filter quick question

So right now I have an afe dry filter in my stock airbox. My question is if I got] trd cold air intake can I substitute the supplied (I believe oiled red trd filter) with my] non oiled AFE dry filter?

I was curious if A) will it fit in the trd cai box? B) Is it safe to use the afe filter in place of the trd filter that comes with the cold air intake system? My concern is possibly doing any damage with using the afe dry filter over the supplied trd filter.

Both the TRD filter and AFE filters are direct replacement for stock. Considering that the TRD CAI uses the bottom half of the stock air box, it should fit without any issues. I can’t say with certainty how it will affect performance vs the TRD but I’m sure it will be fine. I’ve seen guys running K&N filters in the TRD CAI.

 

Yeah I was pretty confident in it fitting. My larger concern is if it's safe to use with the trd cai. I could be wrong but I think the trd filter supplied with the cai is an oiled filter. The afe I got is dry. I got it along with my DAP tune, think it was called stage 2 tune. I just want to be sure I'd be fine using the afe in the trd air box. I prefer dry over oiled and I'm not sure if the cai is specifically designed to use an oiled filter. Want to be sure I'm not going to hurt anything using a filter that's not specifically designed for it.

Gotcha, yea you’ll be fine. The TRD CAI is basically a slightly larger air box (top) with and air intake accelerator that “decreases turbulent air flow”. Otherwise it’s pretty much stock. So if you are comfortable running the AFE in your stock box, you should feel comfortable running it in the TRD. For what it’s worth, I’ve run the stock filter for a day or two while I was cleaning the TRD one.

 

I do understand where you are coming from. Just because I am OCD about things, I’d want the TRD filter. While the AFE will work, I’d probably just buy the TRD filter to sleep better at night.
Is the AFE washable?

 

aFe is washable. It looks just like the K&N except it’s blue. They have the dry version and the oiled version.

100% It would only hurt it if it didn’t fit right. The TRD intake is just a larger top and smoother intake tube. Nothing really changes except for potential air volume. Choose whatever filter you like. You could even use paper if you had to.

 

Yes it is. It's a great filter, both air flow and filtering properties. Highly recommended. Just a dry and cleanable/reusable.
