Hey guys im looking at purchasing a 1/2 ton truck (probably the 2022 Tundra)and also a travel trailer.

Whats your thoughts on the 2022 Tundra pulling a travel trailer?

I know wait, pay load all come in to factor, but should this truck be capable of pulling a trailer once a month for the weekends?

First pick your trailer. Find one you (and the wife if applicable) like and then go find a truck that can handle it. If you buy the truck first you will limit yourself to the capabilities of that truck.

Secondly, whatever trailer and truck you decide on, I recommend buying the whole truck rather than just 1/2.

Yep pick the trailer first or live with what the truck can handle

I went the truck first route and yes it limits the trailer selection but I spend more time in the truck and use it more than a trailer so I chose that route on purpose.

I have no issues pulling a 6k trailer with the 2020 I have, I wouldn’t feel comfortable pushing it out to 7-8k for payload reasons and just general road feel.

I’d avoid that brand personally. Not that any of them are built really well I rented a heartland that wasn’t even six months old and thought a third grader with a hot glue gun assembled it. Rented a Grand Design a few months later and it was much better built

I know nothing of that brand or their quality, but the size and weight you're looking in are about right for a half ton.

Quite refreshing to see, actually. Lots of people come here trying to find ways to pull 30'+ trailers with 900+ lbs. of tongue weight... Like I was told as a kid; you can't cram 10 pounds of sh*t in a 5 pound bag, and if you try it's gonna be a mess. The real fun ones think airbags magically let you haul anything.

Anyway, it appears you're going about it properly @justalfe

Almost all RVs are very cheaply made unless you buy an Airstream.

Most folks only end up using their camper a few weeks out of the year unless you are at retirement age. With that in mind we found a cheap used one that had always been stored under roof. I also wanted something easy to tow with my Tundra so it had to weigh less than 5k lbs loaded. Anything more than that and I would have needed a HD truck due to payload maxing out. We live and travel in the mountains so that is also something to consider.

the 2022 trucks will have slightly more payload and towing but a loaded crewmax will quickly diminish your payload and your max towing will be more like 9000lbs not 12000. Any experienced tower will tell you to go with a HD truck for towing anything over 7000lbs on a regular basis.

Im just a 2x a month traveler in a travel trailer .. And i am looking at a 25ft lite camper.

Some of these I am eyeing have a tongue weight of 750 lbs.

It looks like the Tundra will have a max payload of 1940 lbs. Compared to the F150 with max payload package of almost 3k im going back and forth on which truck to pick

Good luck finding an F-150 on a lot that actually has that much payload. Generally have to special order one with exactly the right options.

Folks who've used both to tow decent size trailers prefer the 2016-2021 Tundra over the Ford for the Tundra's 38 gallon gas tank, 4.30 rear gears and heavier curb weight, which makes it more stable.

I read an article and or saw something on TV recently that the TT industry is having lots of quality problems. Trying to crank them out with inexperienced labor.

I have a 25’ ultra lite. Less than 5k lbs loaded. The Tundra is perfect for this size trailer. By the time I load the truck with family and gear in the bed I am at max payload.

Max payloads are only for the most basic 2WD trucks. If you want any of the nice features or 4x4 you will not be able to get near the max payload of any manufacturer's truck. Same goes for the max tow ratings. It's all marketing ploys.

For examply, the 2014-2021 Tundra was advertised with a max payload of something like 1500-1700 lbs., but almost none are in that range. For example, my 2019 SR5 4x4 CM with the TRD Off Road and SR5 Upgrade packages had a factory payload of 1265 lbs. before any accessories. I know it had the all weather mats, door sill stickers, and bed rail system on it, and that further reduced the payload by an additional 14 lbs. IIRC. So, a fairly basic truck with better floormats, bed rails, and the larger fuel tank was 250 pounds shy of the lowest max ratings advertised. If you add stuff like a bed liner, fancier climate controls, leather, heated seats, step boards, etc. you really run out of payload fast. The same will applies to all trucks.

TLDR: Unless you are planning to buy a basic 2WD you need to expect to be 15-20% less on the advertised payload numbers at a minimum.

We pull a 22' travel trailer (27' total length) at about 6000 pounds with a 2018 Limited 5.7 liter 2WD. It handles it very well. But travel trailers can run up to about the 40' range and well over 10,000 pounds. You'd need to have an idea what you want to pull for a good answer.

I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!! I KNOW PEOPLE IN THE BIZ AND THEY ALL TELL ME SPECIAL ORDER ONE YOU WANT. The special order ones have one team of people working on it and it's not half-ass put together with spare parts from similar models.
The rest of them ALL have major issues sooner rather than later.

How do you go about special ordering one? Are you referring to a specific manufacturer?

As others have said, the max payload models are no frills basic DC 2WD trims. They also usually lack the larger gas tanks like the 38 gal in the current Tundra. Although all the new 2022 Tundra trims will have a 36 gal tank.

If you are OK with less options you can get much better PL capability.

Custom bug spat pattern hood, grill & bumper. Dead Live Oak leaf collection under hood, cowl and lower fenders. Beach sand custom floor covering.
That is listed as 550 # tongue weight. That might be without options, propane or battery. RVs seen to have no real standard when they advertise the their weight.
The Tundra is a fine tow vehicle but limited more by payload that
n towing weight. My new SR5 has a payload of 1217# as equipped. Add myself, my wife, overweight Lab and camping equipment and 550-600 tongue weight is about max for me.

I'm setting up our VC 23RSS WDH in this picture. I'm not going to know until I get to the CAT scales my total weight. 20210927_084950.jpg

From what I read, the 2022s will have 22 and 32 gallon tanks.

Thanks for pointing that out. It'll be nice when the official specs come out. Till then I'll quit stating what I thought I heard as fact.
