Transmission slipping?

Anyone else feel like their truck is trying really hard on moderate inclines at low speeds?

22 Pro Hybrid. On any decent incline at low speeds (less than 20mph) with light to moderate throttle the transmission slips so much, I’m seeing as much as 2200 rpm’s without the truck hardly going anywhere…

I’m even seeing slippage in parking lots under light/moderate acceleration.

I’m also getting some clunky 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

I started watching trans temps. Regularly seeing 208 with flat ground driving. I saw 213 going over a 5000’ pass last weekend. I saw nearly 230 on the same pass towing a 4000lb trailer. This morning in the woods I saw 209 in 38 degree weather, hilly terrain but nothing crazy. Seems high.

I’ve been trying to convince myself it’s just a new truck that I need to get used to, but at this point I’m pretty confident I’m having trans issues.

While I don’t have a hybrid I do notice this as well, minus the clunky shifts, I just figured maybe it’s just a high stall converter? Can’t be good for gas mileage

Thinking the same thing… I was trying to wait til my 10k service, but it’s not looking like that’s a good idea.

You’re driving with the torque converter unlocked, of course the RPMs are going to go up. It’s not slipping, that’s how all torque converter automatics are when the torque converter is unlocked. 2200 rpm is a low stall RPM. Older trucks had 3000 rpm or more stall speed. I’ll say 230 is pretty warm for transmission temp but if no warning lights kicked on, I wouldn’t worry. I noticed some of the shifts are not the best but have you driven an F150 or Silverado with the 10-speed. It’s really bad. I think the chunkiness is a symptom of the super low gearing in 1st and 2nd.

I understand the torque converter is unlocked, but it seems like it’s trying way too hard.

I think it’s a perception thing because of the rpms and the noise. Press the gas pedal more and the truck will take off.

I do not have the hybrid, so I don't know how helpful this is to you. But mine consistently locks while in a higher gear, even up some incline. The RPMs can stay in the low 1000s (under highways speed of course), and will stay low even if I give it light throttle.

I know a lot of people are not fond of them here, but TFLtrucks did a video of the Ike Gauntlet with a non-hybrid. It has been a while since I saw it, but the video showed fairly low RPMs while hauling 7k+ lbs up a mountain pass

AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
This was posted by Ryan and I have since had this work performed. This TSB is for the transmission software fix. I would take it to your dealer and have this software update performed.

    Rci skid plate,
1st gear is only used in tow/haul fyi. What are you using to monitor trans temps? I have a banks I gauge and trans temp isn’t an option as of
My current update. One thing I wanted it for. Also I have had the hesitation Toyota tcm update and still have a significant delay sometimes. No more startup noise so at least they got one portion fixed.

not really, it has more torque and lower peak (2400) than the v8 it replaces

Definitely going to get on this.
Hesitation isn't how I would describe what I'm seeing, more like excessive effort. But a TSB for the trans can only help at this point.

I know, how dare they have such a crazy off the wall idea. None of the other major manufacturers would do this... wait.

Not to mention significantly higher peak power, and low end torque.
Thanks for the insight though, you're an asset

The truck starts in 2nd unless it's in tow/haul!? I had no idea... that's very interesting. I need to mess around with that.

I'm using the JB4. I wanted it for the power increase, but it made the truck drive like shit so now its just really expensive gauges.

The truck does not start in 2nd. It starts in 1st in all modes.

Are you sure the jb4 isn't to blame for your transmission challenges?

Can you return the truck to the factory tune (remove the JB4 tune) and see if the problem persists?

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    Stay stock, stay happy.

Take that trash off and see if your truck improves. Hopefully it’s not borked and in need of warranty repair, because they’ll probably void the warranty.

    Rci skid plate,
I was told by Toyota engineers when they came to my dealer that they start in second unless in tow haul. 1st gear is low for tow haul to take the lag out of the powertrain. Now it is what it is if someone finds something else out but I’m only saying what I heard from 5 Toyota engineers and product trainers when they came to our dual dealer Toyota/vw (I work in vw but am big on Toyota trucks and friends with the Toyota techs )to ask about our battery testers and found out I had just taken delivery of my truck. We had some of the same issues in their demos as our trucks and this was something they said about starting in second gear.

Are you guys sure that it's not the fake engine noise leading to a 'fake' trans slippage?

    Only in 2023! lol...

Sounds about right from my experiences. I have certainly noticed that when in tow/haul mode the truck always starts from 1st gear. When in regular drive mode, it appears to always be starting from second gear unless placed into s mode and downshifted to first.

I only ran the JB4 tune for maybe 500 miles. It made the truck drive so jerky and shitty.
I highly doubt I did any damage in 500 miles, but it is back to stock. I still use the JB4 app for gauges, but that's it.

Which “engineers”? Surely not the ones that designed and tuned this powertrain. It 100% starts in 1st gear and can be verified easily. Just pop your transmission into S4 and accelerate to 40 mph. You’ll count 3 shifts (1-2, 2-3, 3-4) not 2 (2-3, 3-4).

If that doesn’t convince you, try it again in D and match up the speed and shift points. It will be the same. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc.

    That is incorrect.
The JB4 is not a tune and does not write any settings anywhere. It’s a piggyback system. Hence why it does not effect your warranty.
But, yes I am sure the truck is running stock now.

I've not counted the shifts but I noticed. With light to medium throttle, it shifts to the next gear and half a second later it feels like it shifts again. But the rpms don't drop as much. Like if the even numbered gears are closer ratio to the geat before it. Or drawn out shifting then kinda back to back shifting 2 gears, and drawn out then back to back.

You’ll feel the transmission shift, then the torque converter lockup, then shift, then lockup sometimes. The lockup is the slight drop in rpm.
