Transmission cooler missing…I know I know

They likely had data showing that tundras without the tow package(thus minus cooler) were doing alright and decided it didn't need anything extra.

Seems there are two schools of thought
Ones that want a transmission cooler and put one on because they want peace of mind and will deal with warranty issues if they arise
Ones that want a transmission cooler but don't put one on because they are worried about warranty issues or adverse effects to other systems
I fall in the first group and can not report any adverse effects of having a transmission cooler in front of my AC condenser even in the Texas heat. I can only report cooler transmission temperatures and peace of mind.
Still doesn't change the fact that the 2019 model I have, said right there on the Monroney sticker that a transmission cooler was part of the towing package and all I got was the warmer fitted to all Tundras with or without towing package.

It's certainly a modification that 'won't reduce' resale, so of all the frivolous things that most of us do to our trucks, this is one that should be easy to sell to the spouse.

I've been stranded by transmissions that couldn't beat the heat, so I'm happy to pay to prevent it. I used to gamble more when it was just me driving around, but I have 2 kiddos and an awesome wife, so I'm trying to protect that investment too. Many of the naysayers are saving for rims, tires, and more Affliction T shirts, so their line towing doesn't really concern me.

I'm leaning more and more toward putting one in, mainly so I just don't have to think about it anymore. My biggest hangup is deciding if I'm willing to let Toyota off the hook if it does indeed prove to be a bad decision. I can just use it as Toyota says, tow my trailer all over the country, etc. and if the transmission suffers overheat damage, let Toyota pay to replace it. It's definitely a lot of risk and hassle on my part just to ensure they have to pay if something does indeed go wrong. But if they are correct and it's not needed, I'm out nothing. My temps are also not that bad (about 220F while towing).

So part of me wants to just ride this out and see what happens, while the other part of me wants to just put on a cooler and be done with it.

If you tow often it’s a no brainer. I’m not willing to bet on Toyota’s decision when it defies all mechanical logic, plus I don’t want to tow at 60 mph in 4th gear all the time. I have seen right at 230 deg at the pan just pulling small grades in hills where I live, without a trailer. Mike Swears is FOS until proven otherwise.

some owners like dropping $1500 for wheels that stick a foot outside the wheel wells, id prefer to spend less money to ensure the life of my drivetrain for as long as I own the truck rather than pray that it last.

He gave the lawyer speak answer to try to make people stop asking about it. There was a freon change in 2019. They wouldn’t have just redesigned the condenser for no reason. People putting these aftermarket ones on don’t block much airflow to the condenser, so there’s no reason to think cooling would be diminished. Now take 1/3 of the condenser away with the new freon and see how it cools.

But yes this is all speculation until Toyota says otherwise, which they aren’t going to.

This is the first test with OBD Fusion, iPhone and Peak BT+. The weather was perfect.. 68d or lower, sunny and low humidity... so keep that in mind.

The ATF/TQ PID was shared here and on yt videos... so if the reading is correct... 188~ tq and pan seems good for 25 minutes of suburban driving.

If anyone knows how to fix the null gauges e.g. battery volt, gear, alt, etc. pls let me know... the only custom PIDs are the trans, the others are from the $10 base app.

I KNOW I KNOW... I’ll do some real driving and report back... this is just a baseline data point... I’m eventually getting a cooler because it was dumb af for Toyota / Mike to remove it

So this was no cooler? Seems low. Theoretically it should be around the same temp as your coolant, since coolant is flowing through your cooler/warmer puck. My 2018 settles around 190 with the factory cooler.

That is where mine sits with a cooler, goes between 190 and 194.

Timer indicates the truck has been running 25 minutes - given the ambient temp of 68*, I'm willing to bet the thermostat has opened long before now so how do you figure at 190* after 25 minutes driving the engine isn't up to operating temp?

I see coolant temps in the 170's on downgrades after the engine has been running under heavy load for hours...

My engine temp usually moderates around 195 and will go as high as 199 when driving before dropping back down to 195.

His last paragraph implies he does not have a cooler so no thermostat.

Probably won’t get many miles out of that engine without a thermostat.

I think his PIDs are off. It looks like he is idling with the rpm #s, but the throttle is at 16.1 and then the battery is at 12v.

I have brought this up a few times now but no one ever even acknowledges it in any way?

The display on an App takes the raw OBD data and applies some formula to it to deliver the Temp readings and if that calculation is off then so would the reading be off.

We do seem to be all over the place I think and mine are high seeming as I do have the factory cooler and seem to read high.

I have the scangauge and had the wrong PID initially. It read negative I think. I hear you about being one number off will make it inaccurate.

I saw you noticed engine thermostat not transcooler thermostat.
I will say my engine does run cooler with the transcooler being installed

Makes sense - it will run even cooler with the trans t-stat pinned open. My engine coolant sticks around 185 with the trans t-stat pinned vs 190-195 regular.

I used the PIDs that NitroFishing and others have shared. I’ll double check the app but 99% sure that I copied the PIDs correctly.

To those that asked, I do not have an aux cooler yet. Also, some of the gauges in the app seem off or not working.

Circled are the gauges that are not working for some reason. This screen grab was after 25 minutes drivings, but I am in park. The throttle and RPM figures represent idle in park. The trans temps were the same while driving 25-45mph after about 10 min of warm up.

I’ll test again on the highway and report back soon.

Agreed with the cooler being collateral damage comment above.

Bean counters stripped many other options and features in the 2014 refresh.

    Agreed, I own a 2021 and a 2007, I see the differences. I wouldn't blame the bean counters.

Mike Sweers as chief engineer is the sole responsible. Not only that he removed a lot of things of the truck since 2010, he was incapable to even offer a locker as an option in all these years

Japanese engineers develop the Tundra that was truck of the year in 2008, and now with the involvement of Japanese engineers again, we have the grab handle back, cooler and a locker.

Hey let me get a swift kick in on that horse...

2020 Crewmax. Drove 25 minutes on flat highway yesterday, 70-80mph on adaptive cruise control, cool/mid 60s day in middle TN. Only my dog, her gunner kennel, and my toolbox in the bed (probably 250lbs). I ran 220 degrees the whole way down the highway...my old 2007 3/4 ton suburban runs 195 degrees while towing 4000lbs at 80mph... Very disappointing. I'll be ordering the AUX cooler today.

Granted, I've got the 1794, so all that chrome could be to blame.
