Was on my way home last night (1 hour away from home) and the tire pressure warning came on.

Switched over to that screen and saw the driver side rear tire said 26 pounds of pressure. Every 3 minutes or so it dropped another pound. Was able to drive to a well lit gas station and change the tire. First flat tire on a Tundra, was a bit of an experience but was able to do it. Also found the cause, small hole between the treads near the center line of the tire.

I checked the spare and it had 32 pounds of pressure in it but when I was done and drove away it said there was 12 pounds. Ignored this and drove home (figure was the last reported psi of the flat tire).

Now there is a tire pressure warning on the dash. All the tire shops are closed today (Sunday) so figured would try to clear the error. Tried to clear it using the button like it says in the manual, press it 3 times then drive it, but it will not recalibrate. All tire pressures show as '--' and message about waiting for recalibration. I drove more than a half hour to get it to set.

Does the spare tire have a TPMS monitor in it? I am guessing no.

After getting the tire fixed and replaced will try it again and see how it goes.

But I am very happy it has the TPMS, it gave me enough time to find a nice safe well lit area to change the tire.

I don’t think the spare has a sensor in it and you’re getting the warning because it sees the low psi on the flat or doesn’t see it at all.

I know the manual says something about resetting and doing drive cycle so that it can relearn where the sensors are, such as after a tire rotation.

No TPMS in the spares at least on the newer Tundras, I visually verified mine didn’t have a TPMS sensor and I believe the OM mentions it too. If you had the old tire still in the truck that was giving you the low/bad reading.

The TPMS won’t reset and read correctly until you get the old tire (and sensor) fixed.

One of the best mods you can do is getting rid of the TPMS. Sure the light will be on forever (until you mod it), but if you already do regular checkups on your tire pressure, then the TPMS is just one more nanny.

I have it and haven’t checked my pressure at the tires once. It’s a lot more convenient than getting out and going to each tire to check. I can check all 4 psi at once in seconds. There is absolutely no reason to get rid of the tpms. Why would you want a light on all the time for no reason? OP isn’t having issues, he just needs to get his flat fixed and then he’ll be good.

There is no sensor in the spare. The light will not go off until you fix the tire and it has correct pressure in it again.

Got the tire fixed today, put it back on and pushed the button like it says and drove it. Light did not go out.

Tried again, adjusted the pressure down to what it says on the door, 30 in front 33 in rear, still 'Recalibrating'

How fragile are the tpms sensors? They easily wrecked when taking the tire off the rim and putting it back?

Think will go to the tire shop and see if they can verify the sensor is working. If so then take it to the dealer and have them figure it out.

Did you drive around? It may take up to an hour for the recalibration to occur. Either way, you have to be moving at speeds above 25mph in order to even start the process.

Hence I said IF. Besides, not all Tundras can give you the pressure on the display :notsure: in my case the TPMS is useless and only adds an unnecesary expense to a very simple thing. If you like it then thats all right.

I read about a guy who screwed his sensors into a PVC pipe, filled up the pressure and then capped it, zip tied it under his hood and ran tires without them

I don't know what the laws and legalities surround them are in the USA

In Canada, as far as I know, they are NOT required. I run mine and will continue to do so, so long as they don't become a nuisance.

In Mexico, all you need to prove is that your lights are working correctly and window tint isn't too dark... tire pressure, cats, lift, etc... none of that matters

Except the OP who asked about it in the first place has a 2020 which shows psi. I guess I just didn’t see how telling him in his thread that it was useless helped. Especially since his doesn’t appear to be broken. It doesn’t add any expense.:notsure:

Brought the truck to Toyota and they said the TPMS sensor on the patched tire is an after market sensor and will not sync with the truck.

Tire place says they did not change the sensor.

What? It worked before the flat, right? Someone steal your sensor and replace it with an aftermarket one? Aliens?

My thoughts exactly. Dealer says it is producing a signal but the truck will not recognize it. So must be an after market. Also they say they can tell by looking at the value stem. They look exactly the same to me.

I have inspected the valves closer. And the patched tire does have a different sensor. Hope those aliens are friendly.

The patched tires valve stem is smooth all the way around, the stem size is the same diameter as the thread area.

    IMG_0277.jpg

On the other 3 tires the valve stem is slightly wider after the threads and has a an indentation on it for a tool to grab on to.

Did I read that you had non stock tires? Where did you get your tires put on? I wonder if they broke one and put a different one on and didn’t tell you or forgot to tell you. Can you go back there and tell them to fix it?

I am going to go back to the tire place, United Tire of Southampton. My tires are stock, had a flat in the one and they patched it (took tire off rim, patched from inside, mounted and balanced). My guess is tech broke/replaced it with out letting any one know.

I ordered the part from Toyota 42607-0C101, know they don't use oem sensors from prior conversations with them. But I am also looking at that nut on the outside. Think that has been replaced as well, I did not order one of those.

But my plan is to go to them with the sensor and have them fix the tire.

    Finally got it all fixed.

Went back to the tire place with the new sensor. Had them try to have them recognize the aftermarket sensor but they were not able to. Then then put in the OEM sensor and it worked fine.

They were surprised that aftermarket sensor did not work, they said it works on everything and that is why they use them. Still were perplexed as how their sensor got on the tire but they would be having a conversation with the tech who replaced it.

But my tire patch cost me 30 dollars initially and a trip to the tire place (as expected). Then some phone calls to the tire place about my light and they said need to go to the dealer for oem senor issues. A trip to the Dealer to find out the sensor was not oem (no charge). Phone calls and emails with the tire place, they still did not believe they replaced the sensor. Then $70 for the new TPMS sensor and additional 8 dollars for the nut (sensor does not come with the nut that holds it on). Then another trip to the tire place where they admitted that their sensor was on there and replaced it with my new one (no charge).

Conclusion: TPMS is good feature when it works but can be a real PIA.

So...I recently replaced my tire setup on my 2020 TRD Pro with new rims, new tires and new sensors (#42607-06030). The TPMS doesn't show an error or message. It just doesn't read the sensors' psi, it's blank. I've tried pressing the reset button and driving around but there must be a magic trick to getting this to work. For example, initial startup, press tire reset button, drive X miles at X speed, etc. Any suggestions other than going to the dealer?

I had the same issue after buying a tire/wheel set from TireRack.com. I tried to reset the TMPS but ended up just getting frustrated.

I bought an Autel TMPS programmer from Amazon, it took about 5 minutes to program the new TMPS sensors.

Sounds like you might have them in the truck and they are registered but now need to be initialized. You only press once instead of 3 times. From the owners manual page 428:

    ■ How to initialize the tire pressure warning system
Park the vehicle in a safe place and turn the engine switch off.
Initialization cannot be performed while the vehicle is moving.
Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the specified cold tire inflation
    pressure level. (P. 544)
Make sure to adjust the tire pressure to the specified cold tire inflation
pressure level. The tire pressure warning system will operate
    based on this pressure level.
Turn the engine switch to ON.
Press and hold the tire pressure
    warning reset switch
    until the tire pressure warning
    light blinks 3 times.
A message is displayed on the
    multi-information display. Also,
    “--” is displayed for inflation
pressure of each tire on the
    multi-information display while
    the tire pressure warning system
    determines the position.
Drive straight (with occasional left and right turns) at approximately
    25 mph (40 km/h) or more for approximately 10 to 30 minutes.
Initialization is complete when the position of each tire is determined
and the inflation pressure of each tire is displayed on the multi-information
    display.
Initialization may take longer than approximately 30 minutes in certain
situations, such as when the vehicle is stopped for a long time at
    traffic lights, etc. (P. 434)

Yeah, I tried following the Owner's manual page 428. But I guess it's pretty hard driving 25 mph anywhere these days for 10-30 minutes continuously. I may have to bite the bullet and get the Autel TPMS programmer for this one time use.

Try this procedure to register the new sensors. It’s slightly different than the initialize sensor routine

Yes, did that already. The "--" is what is displaying for the inflation pressure. I believe it's just a matter of driving the mileage necessary at the 25mph.
