This cannot be good news for my hopes a 2022 Tundra at a fair price. Starting to look at 2021's at unfair prices.

Current status: Loss of willpower, no resolve, tired of waiting for the Captain to bring back coffee from the mess while I wait on the bridge of the ship as it is sinking. He will be back soon? Right?

News is still fresh, articles are still tumbling in... this one says global 40%. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/toyota-will-cut-global-output-40-chip-shortage. Yet has no mention of Tundra or Texas production. Reports are saying scale back of tens of thousands of units. Not sure how that will be noticed in terms of pricing or availability at the local level.

In my opinion this could be a silver lining for consumers…. In the near future you may have to test drive a “dealer lot” vehicle and then order it to conserve these chips for the vehicles that are sold. It would be a smart move for manufacturers and dealers alike. Consumers would be able to get exactly what they want for the most part and dealers/manufacturers won’t have to worry about vehicles that they get struck with because they are not selling (like a 2wd Tundra on a Maine lot…what???). This will hurt the impulse buyers or the people that need a vehicle quickly for legitimate reasons. However I would almost prefer this method.

I am pretty certain that the lack of Tundras on the lot is an indication of production issues. The chip shortage is effecting all Toyota models.

The build to order model is so much better in so many respects except, as you mentioned, those buyers that have a legitimate and immediate need. Even those will be able to find something somewhere.

Consumers not only get exactly what they want, but also will not be forced into something the dealer wants them to buy to boost their profit margins. For example, our local Ford dealer has a small lot. Volume won’t keep them in business so they have to sell higher margin vehicles. Good luck trying to find a regular 4x4 on their lot; all FX4’s. It’s not that everyone here wants an FX4, those just sell for higher margins.

Dealers need to provide service and product expertise. Most consumers don’t need them to hold more cars on the lot than an average Supercenter has boxes of cereal.

The build to order process should make the sales process more professional as well. Dealers won’t be as focused on immediately getting you out the door in a vehicle, which theoretically would reduce the high pressure sales tactics.

The question is whether consumers will go for it. If not, they’ll buy more vehicles from the manufacturer that has a lot of metal on the lot and everyone else will fold.

They could be cutting the Japan production to have enough chips to start up the 2022 Tundra. I'm sure the initial demand will spike for it, but who knows.

Build to order is interesting, but at that point I'd rather just do away with a dealership and that extra markup and eliminate the middleman at that point. It'd be nice not having any of the BS dealer add-ons that no one wants and can't get rid of. However, TX doesn't allow for direct sales.

Made to order sounds all well and good so long as the delivery dates hold firm when the order is placed.

I’ve got a Tesla model Y on order (for the wife :anonymous:) since April. Delivery was initially scheduled for late June early April, but has since gone past and had fluctuated to as far as November. Now delivery is estimated for October, but even then I can’t tell how accurate that truly is. It’s hard to fathom how your ticket in line is moving up and down spaces for no apparent reasons.

If Toyota experience is anything like that, I can’t imagine it being a good thing. The novelty of Tesla is the only reason I think many people are choosing to put up with this farce.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that my 21 pro order makes it threw, expected build date is sept. 2nd. I talked to my dealer rep, and he said so far everything was a go still and mine was not part of the cancels, but said my concerns were not for nothing, as they had spent that Friday calling customers canceling orders or trying to change trim combos to find a vehicle for them. Now they did not state rather it was a tundra or what vehicle just it is a Toyota dealer so it is still happening with vehicles.

Wouldn't worry too much...we've got one being built on the 17th of next month too...
Heard of one gent who got his put on hold due to some missing add on they couldn't come up with in a timely manner so they offered him a Lunar Rock...
Wifey would not object to that one...:)

That’s what I’ve got in the build is a lunar rock, and as far as port options I already let him know if something is a hold of let me know as I’m flexible on add ons.

When the Wind Chill Pearl came out I was almost regretting that I had bought a Tundra when I did, but seeing these delays and chip shortages drive prices through the roof like they have... I'm glad I was fortunate enough to buy when I did.

The point of iterating my question was that not only do I not care, but you'll be hard pressed to find anyone roaming the 2022 Tundra section that cares about mask procedures in the factory.

Ok fair enough...let me explain my point of view then.
Having worked on a railroad in construction in a hot dusty environment wearing a mask makes it hard to breath and effects accuracy and production...I feel bad for the constraints being put upon younger working folks
over the whole debacle. Your mileage may vary.
Maybe we can get back to the purpose of the thread sorry for derailing it.

Although we aren't through the pandemic yet, China invading Taiwan is a much bigger threat than rona, it'll dwarf rona.

Xi is absolutely determined to attempt this before he retires/dies, it is his goal to go down in Chinese history.

It's not just Taiwan we need to worry about, but all global trade and any repercussions against any Nations that stand with Taiwan, which likely will be Japan...and guess who gets to defend Japan?

Xi is going up for "reelection" soon, he's expected to have another 10 years, we may have some time, but keep an eye on it

China is currently not a match for the US and its coalition of allies. It may be able to invade Taiwan now but I have my doubts. It does seem that they would like to invade Taiwan by 2027 which marks the centennial of the founding of the People's Liberation Army. The problem is that the PLA really has no real combat experience except some skirmishes with India and Vietnam. It really has not shown much. The military training of Chinese soldiers is nothing like the US and I would say not even US allies. Currently we could control oil imports to China. It will be interesting to see what China does in Afghanistan as it seems to have some interest in filling the US vacuum in some way but I am not sure how. Japan has a good navy and the US has the two most powerful navies in the world. The biggest threat is their hypersonic missiles but we have no idea if they will work.

Taiwan is strategic to Chinese and US interests.
