Good argument, however I've actually hunted, gutted and skinned bears. Even around the throat, the cougar's teeth are unlikely to reach anything vital. The hair, fat and muscle are just too thick. A cougar's fangs are 1" - 1.5" on average. A healthy adult grizzly has more fat, hair and muscle than that around it's neck. The body fat alone can be 10" thick in places. The vitals on the bears I've worked on in person are buried under at least 4" of barrier.

I will concede that a cougar maybe could get lucky if it was fighting a youngish, undernourished or fresh out of hibernation grizz. That's a big maybe and a lot of luck though.

Twice as heavy at its lightest, three times the bite force, all of the territorialism and disagreeable disposition - - unless the lion brings a friend, he's not gonna make it.

Never dealt with grizzly’s, just black bears. Tons of mountain lions though. We have shot and trapped them. It was a full time job for a while for my dad on the ranch because the damned things eat an animal a week and can decimate a herd of elk.

Theyre massive. Some of the footprints alone I think would make you reconsider. Maybe a seasoned grizzly has the advantage more often than not, but a cat that big is gonna do some damage and maybe win 3 or 4 times out of 10 if he plays his claws right.

I haven't hunted cougars myself but I've been up close to them and gotten hands on with recently shot ones. They're big, but still 1/3 - 1/4 the size of a grizz. In a no retreat fight to the death, I'd give a cougar 1 chance in 10. Against a healthy adult Canadian black bear, maybe 3 in 10. Maybe.

Shall we find a grizz and a cougar then start placing wagers? :D

1 in 10? pffft. We’re talking about a REAL cat here. Not ring-tailed one.

I used to live over there. Flew out of Deer Valley and Scottsdale. I lived off I17.
There’s definitely some cougars to be hunted up in SDL but I was more into the foxes in Tempe.

    LOL.

A really big cougar is 8ft and 160 - 180lbs. A small grizzly is 7ft and 500 - 600lbs. A cougar's only chance is to get underneath the throat, latch on and start chewing. 1 in 10, at best.

Skip everything up to 8:10. I mean, skip everything - - the guy basically says the bear wins. He's got an English accent, so you know he's an authority.

For the record I've put the scenario to no less than 6 coworkers who are avid hunters. All agree the bear wins.

I wouldn't even give the cougar 1/10 chance with a griz. It would avoid a fight in the wild at all cost. It knows it would lose.

However, a full grown bear would swat a cougar like a Volkswagen on a back road.

Surprisingly bears are just as fast as a mountain lion; speed plus weight mountain lion done!!! It's the same reason you'd never see Floyd fighting Tyson... Now Floyd against some schmuck that's Tyson's size/weight w/o his speed and skill, I'd take Floyd all day long. But, more importantly it comes down to the structure of mother nature, and the mountain lion knows its place in that pecking order.
