I am looking to add a 3" lift to my truck and will change out the wheels later, staying with 18's. I have stock 18's now, that I don't like the look of, got the truck used. I got this truck to tow my travel trailer. Will the 3" lift hurt my towing?

Lift or leveling? A 3/1 leveling kit only raises the rear by 1". That's what most of us are running, and towing is fine. I don't know what affect a 3" lift in the back would have on towing. Perhaps someone with that experience can chime in. The usual rules apply with respect to trailer leveling and weight distribution.

Are you just looking for general impacts on towing with a 3" lift? If you stay around 3" it won't really have any noticeable impacts. The tire size will have a greater impact. The bigger you go the more you see a decline in mpgs, loss of lower end torque, etc. I'm running 35s on a 3" lift and its a little sluggish on the lower end especially when towing to compensate for the bigger heavier tires. I plan to re-gear soon which will help correct this and the mpgs. As far as towing capacity you should be fine. I added bigger shackles in the back to help with squating when towing too.

Thank you for the replies. I guess I don't understand the difference between the leveling and lift? I guess to me I don't notice the rake on the truck now. I don't think that I will go with tires as big as 35s, I think that I am going to stay almost stock on tire size just different wheels.

A level kit seeks to get rid of the factory rake. Most leveling kits lift the front 3 inches and the back by 1 inch. A 2" differential is needed to "level" the tundra. Most kits add an extra inch so as to accommodate larger tires, which is why these kits tend to run 3 in front and 1 in back. It's also the case that raising the front will shift the balance point towards the rear which the rear 1" of lift probably compensates for.

A straight 3" lift would retain the factory rake but raise the entire truck by 3".

I am running a 3" front 2" rear kit on my truck with 35.4" tires. I tow my car trailer which with the car on it weighs about 5000 lbs for the car and trailer. I have no issues with it. I don't really know it is back there when I tow. Of course the SC helps alleviate any acceleration issues with the trailer. Also I have the TRD rear sway bar and the Sequoia front sway bar which also help.

How is the ride with the 3/2 lift? That seems like it would be kind of best of both lift and level.

The question I have is about the TT. How big is that and weight?

The ride is great the Michelin tires are road tires, not off road tires, which helps with eliminating the tire noise down the road. The sway bars have a lot to do with it also as the handling is good even through the center of gravity is increased quite a bit. I really like the way the truck rides and handles in all conditions including towing conditions.

I have a Jayco Jay Flight, it is 33 feet long and weighs 7800 dry. I used to tow it with a Lincoln Navigator.

I'm not sure what the sway bars do. Sorry, this is my first truck and the first time I'm trying to change things on a vehicle.

Holy crap. Well that makes a difference.

Leveling will make it more difficult to keep a little rake, which you need ~.5" to keep the traction control from lighting up your dash like it did mine.

Just put a WDH and a sway bar and you will be fine. Try and stay away from mountains if possible lol

The sway bars help control roll during cornering. Get the Toyota Sequoia front sway bar and get the TRD rear sway bar and you will have vastly improved cornering with your truck. The stock truck wants to roll over and play dead in the corners.

Ok, so no leveling kit for me. I guess I will just do a 3" lift all around.

Is 7800 lbs the actual weight of the TT or what the factory says it is? Usually there is a big discrepancy, but really doesn't matter at this point since you will might be over the limit in payload department...but lets check.

The numbers I know from you and the web.

16000 GCWR (you will be good there by at least 1800 lbs)
    7800 TT
1440 max payload on your truck, the yellow sticker inside your door frame is what it actually is.
9800 is what you can tow, if you have a 4x4...most people do.
    980 is max tongue weight.

So by doing the quick math in my head, 10% of your TT overall weight is tongue. So 780 lbs, before loading. I highly doubt you and the family will put in enough to get the tongue weight over, but 1000 lbs is not unheard of after water, food, camping shit everyone brings...etc. So tongue weight, worse case is 880 lbs. Your good there.

Gross Combined is good 16K-8800-5640=1560 lbs. So I was off a little there. Close, but still good. I may have to eat some crow.

1440 is the max payload on your truck. So this is the major unknown. Add up the wife, kids, yourself, dog and anything you put into the bed of the truck. Also verify sticker inside drivers door and adjust accordingly.

So I am going to say you have a smoking hot wife that weighs in a 105 lbs, and you hit the gym daily and keep a slim figure 170 lbs. Not sure about kids, and lets say one 50 lbs dog. Sooooo...

Smoking hot wife+gym rat+dog=325 lbs Not bad, and you put everything in the TT, so nothing in the bed and if you don't have kids.

    1440-325=1115 lbs

1115-880=235 lbs left over. Shit man, your good if those weights are pretty close.

Lifting a tow rig when you are over 80% of your tow rating can be a little sporty while towing. I have never been to San Antonio, so towing conditions are unknown. Should be good anyway, as long as the math works out and you feel comfortable and confident, enjoy the time away from the norm.

I'm assuming you don't know what is under the hood of one do you? They have the same hp as your truck and 59 lb ft tq more than you do, and it come on at low torque (damn ecoboost motors), tow rating is 8k.

I said it would be fine, it will suck, but welcome to towing at close to max capacity with a 1/2 ton truck.
