I need a bit of help on where to start reading/looking for information. Here’s what I use my truck for and the direction I’m thinking of going but only want to buy once.

    Current:
    - 2016 CM TRD with tow package
    - 275/70/18 w/ SCS wheels
    - stock suspension plus TRD sway bar

    Considering:
    - 295/70/18
    - Lift would then be necessary
    - front and rear bumpers

Truck is really only used on adventures and trips not a DD per se.

I will be buying a small off-road TT (something like the HQ black series for a reference point on weight 4K-6k lbs) to head out on adventures where I could park and do some light (I mean light) off roading.

    So my questions really are:
    1. Should I stay on the stock suspension and wheel size if I’m planning on towing? In other words am I opening a can of worms with the lift + towing?

    2. If number 1 is feasible what should I be looking for in suspension to support the extra weight of the TT and bumpers?

I have learned a ton on this forum so thank you in advance. Really looking for resources and information I can dig into. Thank you again!

Always open to “you are over thinking it” comments too. Just want to get it right.

I think I’ve tried to read every thread of his! Hence the reason I’m also staying with a smaller trailer to get my feet wet.

If your trailer only weights 4k-6k you can put whatever lift and tires you want on it without any performance issues keeping you from where you want to go.

295/70/18s won't cause you any towing problems. I towed about twice that much weight coast-to-coast (~3,300 miles, crossed the Cascades, Rockies and Appalachians) and I've got 35s and a 3" lift.

I upgraded the brake pads and rotors, added airbags, a rear sway bar and an extra trans cooler.

I didn't have any issues. The odometer just rolled over to 170k miles and I completed the first repair on this truck (brake master cylinder). Safe to say it hasn't had any serious impact on reliability.

See most, if not all of my towing will be out here in the Rockies. I hadn’t thought about brakes so I will look into that.

Well you could always just come by and test out one of my trailers in stock(ish) form and get an opinion for yourself.

We could toss my Subaru on the flatbed and see what you think. That would be 6k lbs. If you feel comfortable with that, then we could hook up to my TT and see what you think. Stripped down with nothing in it is 6800 lbs.

What one person’s opinion towing performance may differ from another’s. Personally, “doing” is far more enlightening than listening to us rattle on if this fine or not.

I may have another member off this board coming down from Denver in a couple of weeks to test out weights and mountain passes if you would like to make a day of it. Good way to see different setups and how things handle. You wanna test out my truck, have at it.

Pretty awesome that you can possibly do some real life tests with Chris. Thats a good guy right there.

I think you will want 4.88 gears with those 295’s like no other. It was annoying for me to drive around sea level unloaded with 35 inch tires. I couldn’t imagine towing without regearing

And exactly what I wanted hear. I don’t even want to consider that. I wouldn’t have minded suspension costs, but I don’t even want to head down that road.

I sold my 35s and put stock sized tires back on again. I miss them a lot, but man it is nice to have the transmission work as it should
