Hi all...I am currently deciding to purchase a new Tundra...trying to decide between the SR5 with some options or the Limited.

On the website, and the brochure, the max towing capacity is different, even though the mechanical specs are identical. The SR5 is 9800 for the 4x4, and the Limited is 8800 in 4x4.

The only difference I see is the limited without the TRD sport package has 20 inch rims and tires.

My local dealer technical rep could not explain it...he said the trucks are identical...the limited only weighs 40 lbs more than the SR5.

I emailed toyota tech, and they said there is no distinct difference in the trucks!

So...can someone help me explain the 1,000 lb difference???

    Thanks All!!!!!!!!!

I looked in the User's manual for my 2019 Limited and there is a table which has towing capacity numbers in it, but there are variables for the engine which I don't understand so I can't tell what the towing capacity is. The dealer told me that my Limited, with 20 inch wheels, will tow 9800.

Do you know if both of the trucks you are comparing have the towing package?

    HI Geezer!

Yes, both had the tow package. The Limited had the TRD package, with the 18 inch rims and tires, not the standard 20 inch. I received another reply from Toyota today, and same message saying the capacity stated takes all accessories and options into consideration.

I know you can check the code on the door panel, and it will give you the actual tow capacity for that specific truck. I also know that the manual and brochure are just guidelines, as they cant list every option and how each one affects the tow capacity.

I just wanted to know the why the stated 1,000 lb difference on the Brochure...there has to be a major mechanical reason!!!

    Just wondering out loud!

    Thanks for your help.

no mechanical difference. The only difference is weight and it is not enough to impact the tow rating. If it was tow rating would be all over the board based on accessories.

Tomytun that is how i understand it also.

I haven't been able to run by a scale with me in the truck to see if the curb weight is skewed. I hope others will chime in.

I tried looking in my owners manul for confirmation but didn’t see anything that stated this. Like you said, hopefully someone else can confirm or deny.
