Found a truck I am very interested in at a dealer that is unfortunately over 5 hours away. I asked for a video of the truck and this is a screenshot of the damage. They have it listed at a decent price considering the current market conditions. I have no idea what it would cost to fix it. Surprised insurance didn’t though. Good bargaining chip or pass?

It’s just paint. Anything is fixable. If it’s the truck you want and you feel it’s a fair price buy it. If not….well…don’t!

Normally it’d be a bargaining chip, you could contact a repair shop and get a rough estimate and use that to your advantage in haggling the price.

Worth a shot, but sadly with the market the way it is, dealership may decide to stick their guns and wait for someone to buy it who doesn’t care about the damage/haggling the price down. If you want it and think it’s a decent price might as well go for it, as @ScenicRoute mentioned it’s fixable and looks pretty minor. Best of luck!

So if the truck wasn’t insured, which would be my guess as to why a truck that expensive wouldn’t be repaired... what else wasn’t taken care of.

Fair question, probably got insurance money and pocketed it or used for other things. I would use as bargaining chip and check carfax for any other details.

Good luck op ... minor stuff doesn't bother me to save some dough.

Agreed lots of reasons why they wouldn’t have fixed it, could have been self inflicted and didn’t want insurance rates going up. Doesn’t necessarily mean the truck was neglected. I know plenty of people who don’t care about how the vehicle looks but keep up on maintenance.

Unfortunately there are no maintenance records from 35k up until 81k (current mikeage) when the dealer changed the oil and water pump. Carfax says something about a parked car so it was probably self-inflicted. The price is 32.5k for a 14 limited CM which is great in this market so I’m really considering it.

I would not buy anything during the current state of shortages unless I was with no other options. Really EZ to get upside down if you pay too much on a depreciating purchase.

^This. I’d pass, they’re taking advantage of the crazy used car market now to offload this. I’d wonder what else is wrong with it? This is a no win situation for you.

high deductible (1k-2k) to get lower premiums that would be my guess not to fix. is it worth your time and will the damage bug for that price?

I would definitely walk away. Over $30k for a 7 year old truck with body damage and no service history. If you can find a better deal somewhere else I would spend the time traveling to get a better truck. I wouldn't be afraid to shop outside of my market to get the best vehicle I could.

I had a similar scrape on my wife’s car (she scraped a concrete barrier). Repair cost was $1500 but there was some minor body damage. I would think if it’s just paint (no body/dent repairs) it would in the $800-$1000 ballpark.

Patience is key to finding and closing a good deal. Don't rush it, took me six weeks, five states, and numerous dealerships to get a 52k MSRP truck for $43500 at 0% for 60. Roll them salespeople over the coals, when they are done, repeat thrice!

If you were to move on that truck, there's a company I've used before called LemonSquad. They do very thorough inspections, test drive, 100+ photos and what not. $175 I believe. Definitely worth it IMO rather than the headache of driving down and finding there are other issues

This sounds great in theory (I immediately wished I had known about this for my out of state purchase), but I looked them up and there are a ton of bad reviews online. And in today's market somebody jumping on the truck before they get out there and write you up a report is pretty likely if it's a good deal at all.

Isn't it funny how we all look for service records on the truck, yet most on here do their own service work on their own trucks. o_O:)

That's true, but lots of people who service there own vehicles keep a log or history of work performed. I would hold that to the same degree as Toyota's service history.

yet, when we look for a truck, we look at carfax, not handwritten notes.
That's not how most people look at it as far as work to be the same as Toyota's.

Well I only look at Carfax in regards to accident history, not service history. For service I want either toyota's full service history, receipts from third party shop for service or owners log of service history. Owners log could be notebook, spreedsheet, parts receipts etc. Also age and mileage of the vehicle plays a role here too.

Depends on the price of the truck.

Had similar damage on my truck, bought it under KBB. Was under $1000 to fix the scratch and blend the paint. Got a good deal on the truck, fixed the scratch like new. Made money on the dela.

Hmm, haven't see reviews lately (it was like 5 years ago I used them, and they were great). Talked me out of buying a car which I'm very happy about. Found a bunch of little issues. But I'm sure with any service where you can't have the luxury of picking a specific person to do the report there are going to be quite a few bad apples

Thanks for all the input! I really appreciate this forum. You all are great. I am going to see if they will come down on the price enough to make it worth my while. I definitely would want it fixed after the purchase. Don’t want to really wait for two more years for the market to catch back up to demand (if it takes that long) but if I need to I will. I’m definitely not paying an inflated price for it and will continue to look around if this one doesn't work out.

Walk away. To paint that right and have it match will cost thousands. Painting just the bed the color will be off ever so slightly and bug you to death.

Until you need service…and they’re like oh yeah that guy. Yep we can get you in. Next appt is 2 weeks out.

But that is a great deal.

It’s at a dealership. How’s a dealer going to validate a previous owners diy service. I know my sales guy. If he said the previous owner did all his own maintenance and was meticulous about it I’d believe him. But I don’t believe many people. And definitely not some sales guy that just happened to be standing there when I walked into a random dealership inquiring.

I assure you, the dealer I bought from was very anal and will not be doing any service for me. Others are just as bad, took my 4runner in for first Toyota care oil and they never changed it, found out two years later when I tried to schedule my first Tundra oil change at 500 miles and the bastards said no and then said they didn't do my 4Runner either because they don't believe it should be done early. Yes, phuk the dealers, I have skills and tools!

I have been considering just ordering a 21 (if that’s even possible at this point) and seeing if a dealer will work with me on price but doubtful about that. Had a local dealer I have been working with say they have a 2020 coming in to my specs but are asking 6k over msrp on a brand new one. This may be better off in a different thread but i wonder if you could order one unpainted and have it painted a different color by a local shop. I know it would be a lot of $ but if i bought a new one I would keep it for the next 20 years if it would last that long, and if I’m paying for a new one it’s gonna be how I want it.

They are not going to deliver unpainted for numerous reasons.

Ordering one new is possible, but will probably be a few months. If you can pick out a few "must haves," a dealer can work out a trade with another dealer in the region to get what you're looking for. My dealer did it for me - took 3 managers about 3 hours to work it out.
