I have been looking around for a new ride for the Wife. The 4Runner is a possibility but what brings me to my question is the sales guy at Toyota though I may be trading the tundra and mentioned I wouldn’t get a good dollar for my trade because of the mods I have done. Is this really a thing or is he full of it ?? EB13CB96-13EE-4730-A41E-3698DB0B7C35.jpg

Mine started out as a 1794 and I added the pro front end grill and bumper and the Pro suspension. Took off the 1794 Hideous chrome wheels and now have factory’s with yes larger tires.
New led factory lights and several other things.

I am sure a private sale would do better than the dealer and probably the way to go when it’s time. I keep my stuff mint and do all the maintenance. I have several already saying when I do get rid of the tundra they are interested.

I am not expecting you would get extra for the mods ...He said it would give me less on a trade than one that’s stock.

I sold everything that I took off so it wouldn’t be easy the put it back to a factory 1794.

Unless the dealer has a buyer for your particular truck in mind, they will only offer you what the auction data says they can get if they send it to auction. So they have to protect themselves from potential loss. They don’t know your truck from any other out there and it could end up being a dud that they can’t/won’t sell on their lot after it goes through the shop inspection.

I’m experiencing this first hand right now and regrettably may have to part my truck out if I want to trade for something else. I just hate to do this since it’s so well built the way it is and would be an awesome rig for years to come as is. I feel like I would be neutering it to part it out.

He is saying that because he wouldn’t be able to sell it as a certified preowned unless it was pretty much bone stock. Certified fetches a premium price.

It you have your original oem parts put them back on and sell off your pro parts separately, you will make more money this way.

Ouch sorry to hear, I truly enjoyed rubbing it in my wife’s face that the “junky truck parts” I was keeping in our storage came in handy and made us a little extra money.

You may be able to find someone local that is willing to trade plus cash for oem parts, just throwing that out there...

    Alot of them

Dealers will offer less on trade if it has mods. I just went through this. They offered 12k for my 2013. I stripped it, bought an OEM radio for $65 and a set of steel wheels and tires on CL for $75.00, and then sold it to Carvana for 17,800. The removed parts are listed in the marketplace.

I guess the sales guy knew what he was talking about lol

It seams like you did well In the end that’s awesome.
We never got down to numbers because it’s my wife’s car that will be traded when we decide and it’s has no mods. 55D50466-97AD-4492-AEB2-DA9926D5368C.jpgThis is my truck everything that’s been done is oem Factory parts. That’s why I thought he was out to lunch most people wouldn’t even notice that it’s any different from a regular Tundra!! 04065E87-B260-4452-B99F-74B9C780E043.jpg Wife’s car has a set of wheels for summer so oem wheels will go back on.
    It’s a 2012 with only 39000miles.

Thanks I now am informed on what to expect with doing mods at time of trading in.

Shouldnt ‘depreciate’ the truck but you will never get the $ back for the mods. I lost the $5k in mods on my Wrangler and about $7k in mods on my Ducati. That said, if the right person comes along they will pay extra for a truck thats ‘already modded’. Theres an ass for every seat.

Yes fully agree I never expected to recoup money from the mods but this sales guy said I wouldn’t get very good money because it’s wasn’t all original and in fact he wasn’t sure his sales manager would really want it.
I basically told him he was out to lunch and said I am definitely at the wrong dealer. In fact I probably was at the wrong dealer when I traded my Silverado in they offered $9500 less than what I got. This dealer is less than 3km from my door so would be nice and convenient.

The other issue with mods is that a potential buyer won't be able to finance the truck. They'll only be able to get financing based on the stock truck value. The mods, though they're worth alot, won't increase the value of the truck. It definitely sucks, but this is one of the reasons I try to sell a vehicle myself before going to a dealer.

I think generally speaking it depends alot on what the mods are and how much your time is worth. I've done it pretty much every way. I've gone completely back to stock, partially an I've just handed the keys over with all my parts on it.. For me if it's just throwing the stock exhaust an wheels on then I will take an evening to do it. But personally I'm not going to break my balls to strip off all the suspension ect unless it's truly devastating the trade which I haven't experienced, at that point I'm just excited to get the new car I don't really care . I'd rather spend my time on new mods then undoing all the old ones an then the hassle of trying to sell it an however long that takes but that's just me.Just not worth it to me.. I know I loose money that way but..The fact that OP sold/ got rid of his stock parts, I don't think it would be worth trying to find/buy stock replacement an then swap back..

I think most people read the thread title and jumped straight to post, also skipping post #3.

Never heard the phrase “out to lunch” used the way I think it’s being used either.

It all depends on how much work you want to put in to get it back to stock. Dealers usually just run the Vin and give the vehicle a grade to determine value.

I sold my 1st gen for $2,000 over what I paid for it. Put 5100s, camburg UCAs and a rear AAL and tacked on 20,000 miles from when I bought it. :hattip:

    So a quick update.

I dropped into the Toyota dealer I originally bought my Tundra from a bit farther away from home ....but great group of guys ...makes the drive well worth it.
I deal directly with the sales manager there because I bought many GMC / Chevy Trucks from him when he was on the floor selling GM’s
    Straight shooter kind of guy.
He has no problems at all with the mods in fact they installed some of them before I took delivery. The only thing he mentioned was the tire size. He would not put it on the lot like that but would take care of that as well.
I like to Shop locally but there’s a huge difference from one dealer to another.
    588DDF07-A4BF-4554-A607-B689D9EF49E4.jpg
Trying to work out something on this but not sure if this is the time to dump $60g plus.

From what I've seen, you'll be lucky to get any extra cash for mods trading in. As said, take off what you can if your stock parts are still good and sell the mods separately.

The dealer can put clean recent model vehicles on their lot as Certified Pre-Owned vehicles which makes them extra money. If the vehicle has been modified they cannot do it, since the CPO includes a warranty and they will not warranty aftermarket parts. So, they will have to send the vehicle to auction not knowing what they can get for it, so they will offer you less.

I agree with you 100% but every mod I have on the Tundra is a factory part that’s available. The Pro suspension was added just before delivery and was covered under warranty. Anyway seams like the dealer I bought from has no problem with taking it in on a treads when ever I am ready to do so. His only remarks where the tire size.

That's good. My point was more general for aftermarket mods.
If your mods are OEM then they should not have a problem, as you have confirmed.

1794 interior with the Pro suspension is a truck that Toyota should be offering.
