I was at my local dealership last week picking up some parts and browsed a few of the new trucks for sale in the indoor showroom while I waited. I wasn't blown away by the $68k and $71k prices on the '19 Tundra TRD Pros.

My heart stopped when I saw a new 4Runner with a supercharged performance package for - gulp - $72k!

I barely batted an eye at the $93k tag on the new Land Cruiser...

    Those prices!

What a waste of money to do that to the Pro Tundra. I'm sure they're making some money selling the suspension and wheels that surely were replaced with garbage.

I saw a dealership near me selling a GMC Sierra with a Pro Comp 6 inch lift and upgraded tires. I looked it up online to see how much the lift and tire wheel combo actually came up to. They were over charging by 12k.......

The only reason to chose the Pro is the factory suspension. They should have done that to a Limited with sunroof and called it a day. You can get TRD Pro badges off eBay.

When I was in the market for a new Tundra last December, I shopped my local Toyota dealership. They had a lifted TRD Sport 4x4 in Cavalry Blue priced at $63K. The truck was leveled with Bilstein 5100’s in the front, 20” LRG rims and Nitto 33” AT’s. In speaking with the sales rep, I asked for the price of the truck with no lift, truck only. Their price was $48K. They were charging an additional $15K for the Bilsteins and wheel combo. He asked what I would offer for the truck. My offer was $40K for the truck and $2K for everything else, $42K pre-tax. I helped him understand why I made this offer and he was as shocked as I was when I saw the $63K tag. Of course I didn’t buy a truck there.

I bought the same truck with no lift. I added a factory spray in liner, all weather matts, entune GPS, color matched door liner protectors, and Tundra logo door seals for $41K. Purchased Bilstein 6112 up front, Bilstein 5160 in rear, SMS wheels, and Ridge Grappler rubber for $3,600. Sold my OEM wheels for $800 so net net was $2,800 for better setup than they were selling for $15K.

I suspect most folks don’t have a clue what these type of things cost, so they haggle the $63K price down to 57-60K and they feel like they got a great deal. Can’t be too mad at dealerships for trying to make some wild cash.

Dealerships are always going to have a 130% mark-up. If you buy a stock version of any tundra , and outfit it with the exact equivalent, it would save you 7 to 10 grand! I’ve done it twice now, and both times saved 8500$ !

Dealership accessory packages are often over priced, designed to sucker in buyers who don't understand the value of what they're looking at with the prospect of a fully modded truck off the show room floor with everything buried in the vehicle payments so they don't have to go save money for it after they buy the truck.

The most egregious I have ever seen was back in the early 2000s when I owned a Ranger. I had it in for dealer service and was walking the showroom floor when I saw a reg cab 2wd F250 with 5.4, vinyl seats, manual windows and locks. Had a set of 400 dollar AR Baja wheels, may have been stock size or plus one AT THE MOST, with stock sized looking tires. A 300 dollar lund racerback, a 2 or 300 dollar soft vinyl roll-up cover, and maybe a cheap head unit and some bargain Best Buy speakers. No touch screen, just a 150 dollar single CD player. Basically a bare bones fleet truck with a few Pep Boys items glued or bolted on. The sticker price for this 'accessory package/ was something like 4K. I nearly laughed out loud when I read that.

I always wondered if they got some sucker to bite or someone finally made them take everything back off and put it back to stock to take the truck off their hands at a reasonable price.

They do it because they drop the price of the mods to 50% and still make a killing on shitty lift kits.

Ahh, good old dealer markups. It happens to most special limited edition vehicles, including the Honda Civic Type R, Mustang GT350R, etc.

The suspension of the TRD PRO is literally the ONLY reason to buy that truck over an SR5 TRD Off Road. To remove it and add a lift is defeating the point of that truck. So stupid.

"Special Edition", "Limited Edition", "Platinum" & "Pro" are all intended to squeeze higher profits out of the buyer.

Not really a trick...people just are not smart enough financially. They see work done and only one payment. Never look at long term cost of all that on the loan.
