Hey all, loving my 22 tundra hybrid but we just found out we have another kiddo on the way and think it’s time for something a little more family friendly and to ditch the car payment as our first enters into school. I don’t know a ton about the prior gen sequoia, but assuming all the normal tundra stuff is the same- look for cam tower leaks, etc. looking for a limited or platinum trim around $30-40k, so expecting roughly 100k.

Any model years in particular to look out for or avoid? Did they get the radar cruise control in a particular year or at all?

I know I’ll need to swap to a larger gas tank right off the bat, that piddly little thing won’t work for our summer time activities.

In my experience, you’re going to be fine no matter what you go with. We are on our third Sequoia now since 2011 (not due to any problems, just upgrades for the wife).

2012 Limited: Well over 200k on the odometer. Not a single mechanical failure at any point. Other than brakes, tires, battery, etc everything on it is still OEM. My wife’s parents still drive it and took it from Houston to Tennessee last year.

2019 Platinum: Traded in at 65k on the 23 Sequoia. Same thing, no issues.

2023 Platinum: Brand new, we’ll see how it compares to the others.

Basically, since getting the first one in October of 2011 my wife has never had an issue with a vehicle. Only time anything needed to be repaired was when a truck backed into her and dented the body, and when her catalytic converters were stolen.

The 2019 had the radar cruise, etc. Don’t know if that was the first model year for that but it was 2018 at the earliest.

As long as it’s been maintained and taken care of, you aren’t likely to have anything to worry about. The second Gen Sequoia is a tank.

How many kids is this going to put in your squad? I have 2, 8 and 6, and the Tundra is more than well suited for what we need. Yes the open bed makes it difficult to grocery get, but I have a tonneau cover that keeps stuff from blowing out.

Not having the car payment is nice to though.

We're going to have three kids soon so we're going to try the Tundra for trips and camping and such and a midsize three row SUV for running around town. We have a travel trailer and at least one member here said the 2nd Gen Sequoia doesn't tow very well.

I have towed a 5klb travel trailer no problem with my '13 tree.

It drove the same (pretty much) as my 2010 CrewMax.

The 2nd gen Sequoia is Toyota’s best kept secret. Nearly indestructible. I agree that you can’t really go wrong with any particular year.

I love my sequoia. I have a 2012 platinum with radar or lidar cruise control. Bought it in 2019 with 88k miles for $29K. As for larger fuel tank, I do not believe you will be able to do it on a sequoia you you're pretty much stuck with the 26 gallon tank.

2G Sequoia is a great vehicle IMO but the used prices now are crazy high. Beast of a machine, does everything well. Maybe wait a year til used prices go down.

I think the shorter wheelbase doesn’t allow for the 38 gallon tank. But Tandem Off-road is doing a rear bumper with swing out for the rear tire and an aux tank in the factory spare location.

Bought another 2019 SR5 4WD yesterday. 67k miles, $39k out the door. Rental vehicle all of its life same as the 2019 my good friend Shelby already owns. Stout machine, I told the dealer to not warm it up for us. 22 degrees, started her cold, not a squeak. 4HI cold was a struggle, had to do the D to R dance. Got it into 4HI and 4LO clicked in fine.

Used car dealer tried to scam Shelby by charging her taxes. She runs a 501c3 non-profit so no taxes, period. They tried to get another $1300 with a phony tax charge.

I just got a 2011 sequoia to add to my fleet of Toyota’s, after I sold my 2002 Tacoma, this thing is amazing, fun to drive and rides a lot better than my tundras. I wish I would have bought one sooner.
