Scumbags will be scumbags. I wonder if my gas tank skid would be any kind of deterrent, or if they'd just drill on the side of the tank?

No. That only protects the bottom. Sides of the tank are still exposed.

Well, the news article the OP links gives some hope. Sounds like it's one person right now. If they can catch him swiftly and make an example of him as a deterrent, there might be hope. Then again, with no bail, no hold, etc. it's likely going to get worse before it gets better.

This would be a tough thing to make. Even harder to ship.

The ugly truth is y’all are thinking like rational people. But you don’t necessarily need a power tool to do this. A sharp knife, a punch and hammer, it doesn’t have to be a clean break, it just needs to get the gas out. Hell you could go old school and use a hand drill

The worst thing about this is that you can't drive your truck to the dealer (or wherever) to have the tank replaced like you could without the cats.

Personally, I think the worst thing is that if I caught them doing it I can't do anything or suddenly I'm the criminal. Not saying I'd kill them, but a good ass beating or some rock salt out of a 12 gauge might make them course correct.

Even worse might be when the tanks are on backorder and people are making payments while their trucks are disabled.

Doesn’t work. Drug addiction is far more powerful than fear of punishment, even getting a beating.

As the above has happened here and those same people have 30..40…plus offenses. They have been arrested, imprisoned, beat up, etc etc etc. and with the exception of the ones that have died, they get right back to it.

I guess I got lucky back in 2011 when gas prices were high and some scumbags cut my gas line in my 2008 and siphoned out all my gas. That line only cost me $50 to replace rather than a whole tank

Makes me want to fill a ten gallon gas can with sugar water and leave it unsecured in my bed. They'll see it as an easier score than crawling underneath and drilling.

Not something new, been happening for a long time. People use to drill a hole in the bottom of tanks, pull out a couple gallons, then jam a stick in the hole to stop it from leaking. Owner doesn't realize for a while because they aren't leaking gas and the tank isnt empty. So, they keep coming back every couple weeks to get more.
