Not much of an update. Been hoarding parts and waiting for things to show up in order to install these things during some vacation I am forced to take the 3rd week of July.

Picked up a harness from @iHacker to remove the motocontrol from the equation. Quality seems very good on this and based on the instructions I’ve seen, it seems pretty straight forward to install.

    0CE175D5-0FB2-4607-8313-0F55820CD2D7.jpg

Along with the harness above, I picked up the black TRD Pro LED headlights for my truck. One of the few gripes I have about my truck is the fact that you spend so much money on it, but get shit headlights. Also, there’s not a good option for storage in the truck, but I have things to address that in the future.

    87E54943-B241-44DE-B99B-D54E731867A7.jpg

Also, upgraded our dash setup. I really dig the mob armor phone mount I got for my phone. When my wife drove the truck, she made a comment about how much she liked the accessibility of the mount. So, I decided to get his and hers mob armor mounts. Now, my dash is dual wielding iPhone Xs.

    C551E3EA-3B4C-46C3-9462-7997F33CBA2C.jpg

Here are the 2 - 3M metal discs mounted onto the dash. Then the mob armor mount sits on them.

Additionally, we have some VERY large and remote trips coming up. We’ve always gotten by with a little small first aid kits for small laserations and blisters in the past, but getting caught in a situation in which I was stung 18 times by hornets, made us realize that we should invest in a legit first aid kit. Step in outer limit supply. They had a hell of a sale on their kits from the overland expo show and I capitalized on it. It’s about as complete of a first aid kit as I could find, without going into the professional stuff. This one is also affordable, includes a tourniquet, a board to stabilize breaks, medicine, allaergic reactions, etc. This will pull double duty for inside the house and out, but once the bed rack comes in, it’s getting mounted onto that for our trips.

    34B4C858-4F46-4C56-BB13-8F5045791F7C.jpg

Pull up on the red strap and the kit is released from the mount, which is held in by 2 very strong magnets.

    A3B30715-91DC-49E8-91CF-F44806E654CC.jpg

Next is our camp kitchen update. I’ve been looking for a new camp kitchen setup for a while now. We’ve always done the fire pit with home kitchen large pots and pans, plus utinsels, etc. it’s worked and got us by, but we were never truly happy with it. So on Father’s Day, I got an email from jetboil about a 25% off sale they had. I’ve had my eye on the Genesis system since it came out, but never found a need to spend the cash. However, after speaking to them about the product and what I was looking to do with it, etc, they gave me a 50% off couponcode. I was pumped and splurged on the following:

    - Jetboil Genesis cooking system with pot and pan
    - Jetboil Luna 3rd burner that plugs into the Genesis and uses the same fuel source
    - Jetboil 1.8L Java kit with press for coffee
    - Jetboil 1.8L cup as an extra for soups etc
    - Eureka 5 & 20 lb propane tank adapter
    - Jetboil expandable utensils

All of this should basically cover all of our camp kitchen needs, minus the fuel source, which we will be using a 5lb propane tank mounted in the bed.

    4EC2187E-4C7E-40AC-8BEA-105B2246F202.jpg

Next is a recovery update. I bought a hi-lift extreme. Ended up going to the Louisville Offroad show and 4WP was having a hell of a sale, so picked it up there. Also ordered the RCI adapter to be able to lift my truck/Jeep off the sliders. Never used something like this before, but it seems like it would be significantly more stable than the step the hi-lift comes with originally.

    37255EDC-4BBD-40D1-AE52-5E4670C35315.jpg

Other than that, haven’t wheeled much. Been taking the back roads and snapped a poser shot...

    99F62322-B161-4E65-BAF4-FBCFF6764D93.jpg

Lastly, we had a big wheeling trip planned for the 3rd week of July to CO, but since it seems like most of that state is on fire, we’re not gonna risk it and go to Slade, KY instead to do the Daniel Boone Byway. Should be 120miles of mild wheeling, glamping, scenery, and shenanigans. Plan is to have the rack from @Datin Metal Fab and the roof top tent from Treeline outdoors here before that.

Here is the link and map if anyone is interested in doing this trip.

The black housing was kicked off with the TRD Sport package for 2018MY, but it’s being carried over for the TRD Pro package for 2019.

Here are the cool springs Toyota parts links for both. Probably the cheapest place I have found to get parts like these. You can also get them in the chrome housing though, but since my truck is quicksand with black accents, I wanted the black.

Installed. The @iHacker is just pure quality. Probably the most involved headlight install I’ve ever done though... ha!

Even soldered the connections since I’m not a fan of the T-taps.

Keep your eyes peeled for some TRD Pro halogens up for sale.

I did the same upgrade to my pro. I got the original motocontrol harness though. Might have to change to the plug and play.

I got one of them originally, but since I dragged my feet on my headlight purchase, this one came out and I bought it. Have a motocontrol harness for sale now, ha!

Slowly but surely more parts are coming in, but the biggest box I have ever received finally arrived...

This is solidifying my transition from hardcore wheeler to “Overlander”.

Well... funny story. I am currently working with @Datin Metal Fab to get their tundra rack released, but they had some tooling failure which caused my rack to be delayed. We’re headed to the trail next week so I had to rush and get some uncoated relentless bars to put my gear on, in the mean time.

Good news is the rest of your rack is cut and bent as we got the laser up and running. We are going to get it welded, tested, and powder coated ASAP.

Welp..... kind of a sad update, but the more we research it, the more it’s looking like we won’t be making it to Alaska next year. Shipping costs are just ridiculous and we simply don’t have enough time to make it up there and back in a reasonable amount of time, while doing other cool stuff. 1 trip for the year, just won’t cut it.

BUT..... fear not, the wheeling adventures continue!!

Here is a rough schedule of the planned events for the next year.

For starters, we are headed to the Daniel Boone Byway in 5-6 days.

    July 19-July23

    upload_2018-7-14_15-11-25.jpg

Next up is the Baja 1000. Headed down to chase the race and then on down to as close to as we can get to Cabo San Lucas, while stopping at Coco’s corner and camping on the beach.

    Nov 14-Nov 23

    9B0A0E20-E307-45E7-8220-B4034647BE5A.jpg

From there, we go onto next year with the RedClayRally out of North Carolina and Tennessee. This one should be a blast! All of the guys I wheel with are extremely competitive and this should give us a reason to compete against others.

    May 31-June 2, 2019

    2C627890-4B4C-4631-B1C0-D5CEC05CB6AE.jpg

Lastly, in lieu of the Alaska trip, we’re thinking about doing the TransAmerican Trail. Been researching this quite a bit and the more I look at it, the more I want to do it. With friends out in Oregon to receive our rigs, rough plans are to ship them out, then fly out to pick them up and then drive it from west to east. This gives us the option of doing the whole trail in sections over a couple years. Plan would be to basically cut it in half and spend 2-3weeks driving it back.

    July 2019

    FF1957EC-67D1-4B5B-B502-8E56F6013525.jpg

If anyone wants to join, feel free. Must be self sustaining though, but we’re just a bunch of engineers who are nerds and like to have a good time.

Lastly, if you want to see all the pics for all the rigs, follow us with the links in my sig below.

Keep your eyes peeled for more parts rolling in and updates on the truck.

If anyone is wondering why there are no truck updates, here is they reason why. You can say I like things in their place.

Updates, since I’ve been thrashing on the truck the last couple days to get it done for this trip.

FINALLY happy with how the ARB twin compressor sits in the engine bay with the XFAKTR mount. There seems to be space everywhere, so hopefully I don’t blow a power steering line, again....

    D4010061-4D29-467D-9AB3-4E9744D042C3.jpg

Also, I don’t think I ever posted the sPOD I installed. Got it with the sunglass holder replacement because no pair of glasses I have ever owned has actually fit in there.

    6AAFDACA-5C0B-4553-A4C3-569D1140E3D8.jpg

Wired everything up, fixed the small leaks and the compressor is up and running. Lockers and gears coming in the future. If anyone knows of a money tree farm, just go ahead and point me in that direction.....please.

As an update to the teaser I posted earlier, the tent and all gear is finally setup on the truck. Here is the only pic I took. Ended up having to rush ship the relentless bars, which was ridiculously expensive, but they made it and I was able to get a crappy coat of paint on them.

    249C29F3-AB8F-4EC6-876E-7A02A9F97FEC.jpg

More pics to come after the trip this weekend. Not sure how I feel about the layout, but I’ll change as the need arises.

People say "OCD" like it's a bad thing. That's a tidy-lookin' tool drawer. Nice work.

Oh, and the truck looks wicked cool too.

i know right?! And thanks! It’s a giant PITA to put down, but really happy with how it’s turning out. Have organized myself into 2 empty drawers thus far. Obviously I need more tools to fill them up now...

Also, we’re rolling. Onto the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway.

Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway Trip update:

The terrorist tan land yacht got stuck today on a rock garden.

    I realized the following:
    1) this is a big bitch. Both in weight and length.
    2) sooo glad I paid for actual sliders!!!
    3) I need to relocate the hitch much higher
    4) the above decision is made easier after you rip off the rear bumper.....
    5) I need to relocate the SAI pump intakes so that I don’t destroy them.

Then while trying to setup camp, we had a torrential down pour.

Now, it’s cleared up a bit, but have this the following look forward to.

Thus far, pretty happy with the RTT investment. We’ll see how it weathers the storm and then make a full review.

Full trip report to come later.

Small update. Been working with @Datin Metal Fab on the release of their new bed rack for the tundra platform and I am happy to announce that I just paid to place my order for their 5.5’ bedrack in the 14” height flavor. They will also be offering the rack in the standard 18” height for those that like a taller rack.

Here is a sneak peak of the first one mounted on another Tundras.com member for fitment confirmation.

What I am most stoked about is the cargo shelf design that is incorporated into the rack that helps use some dead space for things like coolers, firewood, etc. For those of us that aren’t 7ft tall, this will be a huge benefit to being able to reach into the bed without having to climb in.

It has not been release yet, but here is the Chevy Colorado version:

One day when I buy a rack, I think this’ll be it. Hell of a good design, plus I think it’ll allow me to keep my crossover tool box.

Its called the Mantis Tool Grid. Matco picked it up though and is selling it exclusively. It sucks to put down and its a bit pricey, but its organized me into 2 open drawers now and buying this was much cheaper than going into a 3 bay full size tool box.

    Here is the link.
