What do make of all that metal he found on rear diff plug???

He rightfully calls Toyota out on not recalling the hybrids and recommends an extended warranty.

I just watched this and then saw you posted it. He called it straight up. Toyota needs to seriously step up their game. I have owned 6 Tundras over the years and will not be buying a Gen 3 until Toyota gets their act together. Not a hater…just wish Toyota would do a lot better.

That metal on the diff plug is simply bullshit, and calls for some ass kicking with their personnel at Hino IMO. I've had the same experience with all my vehicles having no chunks of metal on the plug.
Short trips do in fact kill the oils lubrication properties and will cause motor issues down the road, if not changed earlier. I agree with him totally on that. For those of you that Short trip a lot, I would follow his advice for sure. I plan to until I have 20k on the odo, b4 I extend my OCI much over 5k.
Front diff fluid looked great and there's no need for an early dump. Unless you continually use 4wd.
Transfer case and rear diff I will absolutely dump at 10k.
Everything else he recommended I plan to follow to a T, other than the wipers. Hell, i have original ones on my 21 DCLB with 36k miles and they're totally fine.
Chicago could be hard on em I guess, so maybe he needs to replace them IDK.
Extended warranty WILL be on my list as well. B4 the 3/36 is up.
It's kinda sad to be honest, as I've never bought a warranty on ANY Toyota product I've owned over the past 40+ years and I've NEVER needed it either.
Guess it's the world we live in now, so I'll have to cover my ass somehow.

    OP.....thanks for the link.

So far so good with mine as well, and I love it. Fit and finish is great on mine, with no complaints. Other than the horrible paint job on my wheel flares which could've been better. Maybe I will have em paint matched down the road, IDK. Shouldn't be too expensive since they're already painted.

He is right about the truck as far as having exceptional towing capability. It simply blows me away how well it tows.
This guy DOES know his stuff, as I'm a huge fan and I've learned a lot from him.
So I agree with you that he's spot on.

Personally, the fact that he kept going back to the fact that the engine issue absolutely overshadows the multitude of other issues that each in itself is not normal to a Toyota vehicle.

What I’m curious about is the seemingly extreme differences in experience with this truck. I do wonder if it’s luck of the draw with QC issues.

I’ve personally had an excellent experience with my 2024 SR5. I don’t experience the rattles, build quality issues, etc that are often reported. It’s far better built than my last two Chevys and I work my trucks hard. 45k miles so far, tons of towing, snow driving and heavy loads.

But I 100% also believe that others are having QC issues, and man these things are too expensive for those kinds of complaints to be acceptable as “just the case with modern trucks”.

So what if that’s the deal? Some experience rattles etc because it was a Friday afternoon at the factory and jimmy on the last shift slapped em together poorly. Whereas some get lucky and their trucks are solid.

I believe the ......Friday afternoon and Jimmy couldn't wait to get a case of beer and get home to get tanked.
    Obviously personnel related IMO.

But then again....should we believe everything we read online?

Metal shavings in the rear diff after 10k? Shameful, especially for a company that prides itself on quality. Won't be trading in my First Gen anytime soon.

No because when it comes to vehicles the vast majority of people only come to post when they have an issue.

However, when you find actual data you need to take note. It is a balance.

The Car Care Nut is great. I loved his opening comment about Tundra forums. I got a good chuckle out of that.

I have 25K on my 2024 and, like you, have not experienced many QC issues.
My problems were minor so far: a cracked seat and broken radio knob.
It’s just that fear of the engine blowing up at any time that has me rattled.
Very anxious to hear what the second recall remedy will be.
    Tick Tock Toyota….

YES - I watch videos like this and get a brief bit of inspo to start cleaning my workshop. And then a new project begins and boom, half disassembled projects everywhere :anonymous:

anyway, I’m very invested in his journey with his 2024 because it’s probably the most objective, accurate take. AMD is one of the best, most honest folks out there.

I enjoyed his insight and knowledge of not only the brand, but the Gen 3 truck we all share in common. I too love my 2023 1794 and find very little wrong with it at this time. I am thankful for this group sharing the recommendations to purchase an extended warranty thru Troy. I have my 20k service set for this Tuesday with a local Toyota Specialty Repair Shop and will be interested to hear what they think of the truck and Gen 3's.

I always wanted a shop with a lift, but could never justify the expense just for servicing my own vehicles. The lift makes it look so easy.

After seeing that rear diff, I'm regretting not changing the fluid in mine by now at 33K miles. Oddly, I only see diff fluid changes required under the Special Operating Conditions in the maintenance schedule, but it's not listed as normal required maintenance at any mileage, just a inspection item.

Agreed, he railed on the poor quality for a long time, then said he'd never get rid of the truck. His wife must really like that Limited Edition leather.

Yep, I also did around 30k (don’t remember the exact mileage…somewhere there). I did not see shavings like that on mine. But still, would have done earlier!!

My post was worded badly. I still haven't changed my diff fluids at 33K. Now I'm 3 days away from a 5000 mile roadtrip, and won't have time to do it before we leave. I'll have to put it on the to-do list when I get back.

I have to wonder how many service advisors are excited for these videos. Can you imagine how many more rear diff and oil changes they are able to sell next week?
