Staying ahead of the Honda Accord to maintain the top spot among passenger cars, even as sales of both models sink by double digits.

The list doesn't go back far enough, but a quick google search shows that the best selling car the year I graduated was the Toyota Corolla. It had only been in production for a few years at that time.

Maybe not the Best Selling car the year I graduated high school but this was what all the guys wanted ~ at least I did.
I rode a used motorcycle to school and on a good day my compadre would pick me up in his 1962 Fuel Injected Pop Top Corvette.

1989. The Accord. Yeah baby! It was available for the first time as a sedan, a coupe, AND a hatchback. AMAZINGly boring....

I remember a crapload of cavaliers and berettas, but the cavalier body had changed just before i got out of school. i would go with the camry most likely. gonna go look now and update.

update: 1997 was the camry. I saw the cutlass supreme on there in 1983 I think? My parents traded a 79 mustang for a supreme in 82 or 83. there definitely was a ton of those and the buick regals back then.

The year I graduated high school was the same year that the VW Beetle overtook the Model-T as the best selling car ever. Mine was red.
