The 4.7L engine (Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tundra, etc) all run the same coils. Check out the reviews on Big Gurrll. I made my decision to buy these based on a few of the older engine 4.7L LC guys reviews.

Thank you. She is in top shape right now. This coming week I’ll be optimizing the brake system starting with new high performance flexible brake lines and then moving over to rebuilding the rear drum cylinders.

You make me nervous about my bearings...had a leak in the seals so decided to get new bearings and all new. The damn shop took almost 2 weeks, because their press couldnt do it. They brought the axles to another shop to press everything together...well less than a couple a month and it's leaking again. Brought it to the same guys to repair it for warranty, if it wasnt for how much it cost, I would have gone to a different shop. They have had my truck for about 2 weeks now...I stop in every 2 days to make sure they are actually working on it. Hopefully they dont ruin my axles like that! Im pretty pixxed off about it

In the next few days, I’ll be pulling my wheel to inspect the Stealerships work. The truck has enough miles on it to know if there is a leak. I hope you get your truck back soon because thats entirely too long to be in the shop. Its a one day job, at the most.

Thanks, Ive decided to go in tomorrow and "calmly" assert that he better finish it soon or Im going to make a big deal out of it. And if it still leaks, Im asking for my almost $600 back from the first time!! Hopefully yours will be all good to go from the stealership.

Not sure how you paid, but if its by Credit Card you can just ask the CC company to claw back the funds and let their corporate lawyers crush the garage. You’ll get your money refunded onto your CC and never have to beg or see the garage again.

If by check, contact your State Attorney General and then go to your local court house and file a Small Claims. Most States have a $5,000 Small Claims without needing a lawyer. A subpoena will do wonders to the owner coughing up vs. going to court.

If you paid cash, then Small Claims with your receipts.

    Keep us informed.

I paid cash. I might have to look into that, thanks for the info. We will have to wait and see if it still leaks after I get it...if so, they will be in for a rude awakening. I hate that Im in a small town too

Drove around this morning collecting parts. A few other parts were delivered to the door.

Put the China knobs on. Took some pics so you can see how they match up with the OEM broken and repaired ones. Overall they are almost identical in spec/size. The plastic seems pretty strong, as well.

Crawled under and sized up the new brake flex hoses which seem the exact length. The outside diameter on these new ones are almost half the OEM originals. Amazing. Feels like a quality product with the PVC coating melded into the stainless braids.

One Man Power Bleeders seem quality, as well.

Here are the rear drum cylinder rebuild parts. Forgot to include these earlier and to mention how much quieter the truck sounds with the added insulation from yesterday.

Long day on the rear drums. Did a proper job with wire brush, Rust Reform, and some Gloss Paint. Worked the rear drum action and cylinder rebuilds in between spraying. Didn’t get a chance to bleed the system as it can wait until tomorrow. Couple of observations:

    1) NAPA spring kit seems inferior to the existing Toy parts so I reused everything (except for the e-clip and horseshoe clip which were good and are spec’d to replace). I did also use the NAPA big springs, but all the little springs are all skinny and smaller than OEM.

    2) The Toyota Rubber grease is slick stuff!

    3) Didn’t hone the inside of my cylinders as they were in good shape. My new honer also seems too rough/abrasive so I didn’t use it.

    4) You need three hands when doing these rear drums.

    5) One of my shoes looks to have been dropped on edge in shipping and a little chunk was loose so I pulled it out. Too late to turn back!

    6) Wheel Bearing Repair by Stealer is not leaking!

I anti-seized coated everything real good before putting the paper gasket on. Really had to wire brush the mating plate and inside of the drum to remove to Original Bits from years past that were stuck on to the surfaces. I made the inside of that drum look real shiny (no pics).

Only 1 of 4 pistons on each caliper were working. This was after 15 pumps of the brake pedal.

The pads are 1.5 years old (12k miles). Seems like only one piston on the inside of each wheel caliper was working fully and the one below it was slightly working. Both outside pistons on each side were seized. So, maybe they were equal in their pressure keeping the drive line straight.

I just buttoned things up and did some more post-mortem analysis on the calipers. This pic shows the actual piston that was working the best after I pulled it out with channel locks. Nasty fluid in the chamber cup was from being trapped up in those other chambers even after I’ve bleed them 3 times prior recently.

Check out the corrosion built up on the side of the ‘best’ piston. I can imaging what the others would look like if I could pull have them out. Tried my best, but no can do. Locked up!

    Test drove with the DOT3.

Finalized the DOT5.1 install. Big difference in color which helped me know when to stop bleeding at each wheel. The Self Bleeders are very nice. Makes for an easy one person job. This fluid change makes the pedal a little firmer compared to fresh DOT3. I could feel a slight difference.

Removed the LSBP Valve Lever and cleaned it up, Rust Reformed it, and lubed all the parts. Smoov Operator now. Lowered the nuts.

Braking like a dream now. So smooth, even, and powerful with the new calipers. Pedal does travel a hair farther compared to before. Maybe because the hydraulics are working all pistons properly? Very confident feeling in braking compared to before.

Dismantled the old calipers. Confirmed 3 out of 4 pistons on each side are stuck. The circular system of the caliper was partially, or fully blocked, with cack.

So stoked in ‘Brake Nirvana’. Yeah! Less Dangerous. Yeah!

Finished the front brake 13WL upgrade. Took about 7 hours in total. Truck stops pretty good now. I’m still getting used to the new pedal feel that the upgrade gives. Feels like pedal distance is a *little* farther on the push. The braking is much more solid.

Here is a picture of the Widdy Wack Bleeding System. Pretty straight forward. Got all the ‘Self Bleeders’ installed.

Bottom is a pic of a loose cotter pin that was making a rattling noise on the passenger side. I discovered the noise a few months ago when in a parking garage. The echoing sound caught my attention and stumped me until today when pulling off the bent up axle cap to straighten it out I could hear the tinkle sound of the pin rattling. Fixed it by bending the other leg up in the opposite direction.

Final post-mortem pic of the old rear drum brake cylinder. Glad I was proactive on this brake job as it looks like these rear seals were on their way out. The front calipers were toast as the above pics show.

Overall, the truck is braking much better now. An easy graceful and powerful type of braking is the best description.

Edit: Adding a pic of the cross section of one of the old removed front brake hoses. You can see where the inner hose had developed a split. Glad to be pro-active on this, as well.

Painted up my wheels today with Duplicolor Acrylic Lacquer Wheel Silver and Clear Gloss rattle cans.

I really love my 3rd gen t4r. It was going to take a pretty sweet truck to replace it and I think I've found it. Can't wait to get into my Tundra more than just fuel. Gotta sell the t4r first or my Mrs is going to give me a stern talking to.

Spent about 4.5 hours installing new steering rack bushings (including drive test time).

Steering seems softer/spongier than prior. Steering is straight and true. No need for alignment. Less road feel and more Cadillac big car drive feel. Truck turns well but just feels softer.

Old bushings were harder than the Energy Suspensions. Old bushings look to be Dorman per online studies with the split in the middle versus offset. Looks like the old bushings have been on a long time due to amount of corrosion.

Torqued everything properly. Greased everything with the Energy Suspension grease. Rack has about 1/16” play side to side when the wheel is being turned. Looks like these new bushings have play ‘built in’ to them.

I’ll live with these for a while and get used to them. Let the mojo settle in on them and then make a final decision. Its a definite change in the softer direction. Still a positive feel and the truck drives/tracks great, but its spongy and I feel less road.

Put the old aftermarket D-Ring Steering Bushing back on. The steering is much more to my liking now. Its tighter and less squishy. Left the other recently installed new center and driver bushings in place. Steering is now almost as tight as before which is doable.

You are indubitably a professional in my book. I will always look to you for inspiration. This fantastic restorative build thread spurs me on to save more money to build my own shop. Pops and I have always done our wrenching laying down on the gravel driveway. Time for a much needed upgrade, but that means no wrenching on the Tundra for a while. A neccessary give, and take.

The best to you, and yours as well. My hands are too scarred, and damaged for any sort of modeling. Perhaps I could be that guy holding a power tool with greasy hands while the tool is pristine. Lol

Did your china knobs actually kinda latch on like the OEM knobs?
also reading this on a laptop definitely improves the reading experience.

What paint did you use for the inner fender well as well as the undercarriage? Truck looks amazing by the way.

Yes. The fitment is a tension fit more than a latch fit. The new knobs are basically 99% identical to the OEM’s.

Thanks! The fenders/wheel wells I used Rustoleum Bedliner. The undercarriage is greased using Moly-B out of a tub applied with a sponge. The grease makes the metal look matte black after it has some age to it. Makes a nice hard rust proof shell.
