just my luck, last week I hit a deer. smooshed the bumper a bit, ruined the brush guard. Insurance is going to give me a chunk of change, so I'm thinking it's time for a steel bumper.

    pics of the carnage.

New Brute Force Fab Full brush guard bumper is on order.

I also picked up a pair of Tacoma 4.56 differentials for $450. I'm going to swap them in, along with new OEM upper and lower ball joints to replace the chinesium ones that are in there now.

    gonna be a busy weekend!

    85135B11-DACA-4475-81DD-B37F4AE25B72.jpg Big update.

this weekend was spent installing the Tacoma differentials and new oem ball joints.

    drive shaft disconnected

Brakes semi-disassembled. I only pulled the axles a few inches out. I also discovered that I was lucky, and my axle seals have not been leaking since I unclogged my breather.

Clean housing with no 3rd member. My seepage issue on the rear just happens to be a poorly sealing full plug, not the housing rusting through. Good news!

not even 2 years old, and rusted INSIDE the joint. So glad I replaced them.

new OEM installed. The ball joints took me and my brother about 3 hours. Such a pain.

I got impatient the latter half of today because we weren’t making much progress, so the pics ran light. We got everything buttoned up, and the 4.56 gears make a world of difference. It’s a whole new truck.

    takeways:

    1. the front diff is HEAVY, it don’t feel good when the fall on your chest, and it can be unpredictable when trying to remove. We spent over an hour trying to get the thing wedged out.

    2. I hate ball joints.

    3. more people should consider the Tacoma differential mod. 4.56 gears for $500 is well worth it.

    4. I was told I would need to swap the entire front axle tube from my tundra diff to the Tacoma one. This was not the case, I just had to swap the vacuum actuator for me electronic one. Easy-peasy.

    5. I hate ball joints

    6. you can FEEL the difference between cheap Chinese, and high quality OEM parts. I’m a new believer in going oem for suspension parts.

The tacoma diff swap sounds great, cheap way into a re-gear. Is there another thread hiding around with more info?

Custom sliders - installed. I’ll try to get some better photos in the morning. Not gonna lie, my bedliner attempt royally failed. I tried to create a makeshift booth in the garage with a propane heater, but due to sensors and crap it would shut off every hour, so it took 3 days to dry, and my booth was too small for me to get every angle. :annoyed:

I’ll be redoing it in the spring for sure...

@lsaami did you make those rock sliders?

Also, can you not steal the gas door off the donor truck?

The sliders are my design that my brother welded up for me in his automotive welding class.

the donor truck didn’t have a gas door. However, I actually ordered one and it’s sitting in my house ready for installation.

Not much has change, although the truck recent crossed 250k.

Reporting back on the differential swap, I haven't had a good tank of only highway to compare yet, but I’ve had very little MPG difference since the gear swap. I didn’t do it for the fuel economy, but I was hoping for a bit of improvement.

Can you briefly explain the short cut I think you are mentioning per the 4.56 Taco Diff Swap?

okay. So the the tundra and 1st gen Tacoma/3rd gen 4Runner share the same front differential and rear 3rd member long as they’re the non-elocker versions. The Tacoma’s and 4runners got 4:11, 4:30, and 4:56 gear ratios, so if you can track down the correct size, you have a cheap swap for less money, and Toyota OEM gears. I got both front and rear differentials for $400.

So, I tore down the rear end by removing all the brake components, and removing the 4 nuts the hold the axle shafts in place. Once the axles shafts are out, you just unbolt the rear drive shaft from the differential, and remove the dozen or so nuts that hold the 3rd member in, remove the gasket material, put in the new gasket and replacement 3rd member, and put it all back together.

for the front, you have to disassemble the front hubs to remove the CV axles, remove the breather and wiring from the front diff, remove the front driveshaft, remove the 3 mount bolts, and squeeze the sucker out. It took me and my brother about 1 1/2hrs just to get it jiggered out, and when it did, i “caught” it on my chest. Once it’s out, it’s pretty easy to swap over the electronic actuator in place of the vacuum one that’s on the 4Runner and Tacoma’s, replace the axles seals, and whatever else you need. Getting the new diff in place is also much easier than getting it out.

clear as mud? Everything is pretty much direct swap aside from the front actuator.

Yes. Its pretty clear actually. Sounds like a play and play swap for the most part. Only oddball factor is the Actuator Swap in which you use your existing saved OEM one instead of the vacuum one.

No need for shimming gears etc? Just plug and play with the new assembled $400 members?

Yep. No shimming require as you’re not actually disassembling the 3rd member or bearings. It’s a pretty neat design actually.

Did a quick search on the 1995-2004 Taco Gears. Not showing 4.56 as an option. Don’t see LSD as an option, either.

Maybe you could post some part numbers/list when you get a chance?

picked up this little gem last weekend. M101A2 trailer with original canopy. quite a trip coming home with it, both tires on the trailer blew out at the same time, forcing me to park it on the side of the interstate and find the nearest tire shop. No major plans for it at this point. going to get some nice offroad tires on it and do some maintenance. It's going to be my offroad wood/hauler/adventure trailer, so it'll be just fine in stock configuration.

Leer high rise topper installed. It’s YUGE!

seriously. The amount of extra space is killer. It’s so big there’s an echo!

been a while. lots has happened. Cot the bed lined, along with the BFF bumper and my sliders. also took a trip out West for a buddies wedding, and got to hit a trail.

Before that, I did another oil change, tire rotation, and replaced my tired throttle body that has been throwing code for the past 2 years. the parts truck has more than paid for itself at this point.

I also found out that this old girl SUCKS fuel at 75-80MPH. I was in a time crunch getting there and back for work, so I had to push it. I never got more than 14MPG, with the trip average being around 13. OUCH!

I’ve been averaging 18ish mpg doing 80. But my tire combination has me at like 2500rpm at 80

    WHAT?! I'm at about 2700-2800RPM at 80 because 4.56 gears and 33s.

TBF I was also fighting a mild headwind both ways. This thing feels like a sail. what tires are you running again?

ah yes. VVT and 5 speed + better gearing must make the difference. I've noticed a nice fat torque dip between 2200-2700RPMs, right where I sit on the highway. If it needs to downshift, straight to 3600-3900RPMS because 1:1 3rd and 4.56 gears.

I'm also quite happy with the Mishimoto radiator. I can't get this thing to go over 195° coolant temps for anything, even running wide open at 4000RPMs for an extended period of time.
