Someone on r/cars posted a screenshot of this message he got from a Toyota salesman today. The sales manager apparently didn’t like the way he did business. Seems like a pretty stupid message for them to send.

The sub’s mods made him remove the dealership’s name for some reason, but I messaged him to see if he’d share it with me.

I think we should all absolutely know the dealership!! Who would ever go there after seeing that?

Yeah, they’re basically stating that they don’t want to do business with anyone. At the very least, that’s a pretty arrogant and unprofessional response.

Exactly why I messaged him, so I could inform the members here. The rules there prohibit it, though I don’t know why.

What they’re saying is they only want to do business with suckers that they can rip off!! Not the least bit surprised though, there’s definitely more dealers like this then honest ones

A while back I was looking to trade in a Ram that I had for another used Ram. Mine was a RCSB 4.7 manual transmission. But it was pristine. I was looking at an extra cab with the hemi. It was a great looking truck except the rear bumper was dented. I let the salesman know that that bothered me. Coming out of a truck with zero dents into one that was not quite perfect. I was hoping he would say they would replace it if we could make a deal. Instead he asked me “what are you a perfectionist?“ pfff I left. I didn’t even want to bother trying to deal with that guy.

I mean shit! Of course we want the best price for our trade-in and the best deal on the one we’re buying. WTF do they think this is? It’s obvious they want to give us the least amount and have us pay the most they can get for the new truck. That’s a given.

I got the same thing when shopping for a pro. Dealership offered low ball 32K for my 17 with at the time 9k miles on it, saying 18's were going cheap to make room for the 19. That they wouldn't be able to sell for more than 34k. Sent pics off their website of 17's for 38k+ for SR5. Never got a response back. Seems most dealerships blow smoke up your ass until you call them on it then they don't want to deal with you cause they know they can't sucker you out of your hard earned money.

When I bought my truck, the sales manager told me they weren’t in the business of giving away trucks. I told him that’s fair since I wasn’t in the business of giving away money. Ultimately, he gave me the price I wanted for my trade in and the new truck. I went home happy and they still made money.

Everyone needs to make a living and unfortunately dealers like these will prey off those who are less educated in the buying process or simply don’t mind paying more than they need too.

I still don’t think it was the proper way for them to handle the situation, especially via text message.

To play devils advocate, I’d love to see the other side of the story as well. Was the buyer being outrageous with their request?

My buying experience was similar. It went back and forth forever and finally they gave a little and I gave a little.

The sales guy was up front about the number of people that walk in without a clue. He said they make a killing on those people. He said he felt bad doing it, but I know he didn't.

I was asked to leave a dealership because I kept telling other customers to go to car max and get buy quotes on the vehicles they were trading in every time the salesman went to “talk with his manager” about my counter offer. They said I can’t do that, I said it’s a free country and you guys keep leaving me to talk with your manager every 5 minutes.

I actually saved $6k of my purchase because of this. They offered $8k for my trade in and car max offered me $13k, the dealer ended up matching. They threw in another thousand if I promised not to talk with anymore customers because I already had two that left the dealer to go to car max. Then asked me not to come back to the showroom.

Where I finally bought my truck, I told them I'm going to do everything I can to pay as little as possible for what I want. I ended up trading my 2015 4Runner lease with 77K miles on it for 29K (pay off was 23k) and then they took 6K off of the sticker price of our Tundra. They were more interested in making sure the other dealership didn't sell me a truck vs making more money. The 2 dealerships actually talked on the phone a couple of times after they figured out how I was running them against each other.

I would say thats fine if that is the way they want to run their business. They are in it to make money and so am i in my business. If i have a customer come in and lowballs me on my quality products i would tell him the exact same thing...go somewhere else.

Man, I just hate dealing with these guys.

A couple months ago when looking for a new to us vehicle for the Mrs I saw a late model, low mile, Rav4 limited at our local Toyota dealer advertised for $19k and some change. Figured after tax, license, etc and some negotiation I could write a check for the $22k we budgeted and head on home.

Not happening. After sitting down with the clowns the closest we got was $25.5k. Aparently I had missed the the ad's fine print regarding reconditioning, protection package and a host of other add on's.

I accused them of bait/switch, ethical issues, and a few other things before walking out and telling them they could lick my balls.

Exactly. Most sales people I have met Have been pretty decent. We both know what we’re there for. They need to feed their family and so do I. I want the best deal I can get and they need to make the most money they can. Otherwise why the hell are they there? For free service? One thing that does need to happen, is they need to be cordial and I will return the favor. My last salesman gave me his card and said if I send him any business he’ll flip me some cash.

90% of car sales people are slimy pieces of poop. They make me cringe so bad. Dont know how people do not see through the lies, tricks and manipulation they play with every single customer.

I mean we all know dealers want to bend you over on both sides of the deal, but to flat out say it to that guy and also suggest that he is the one being a PoS for trying to get a good deal is unbelievable.

it is sad there is so many dealers that do business that way. When we were looking for the 17 drove down to the dealer that had one with the option we wanted. took it for a test drive and then the game started. Was given here is the bottom line. said the ad i printed had this price. that was the autotrader price but we can do this and if that does not work no hard feelings and we can part as friends. so said nope that will not work and left. drove 2 hours to the other dealer and was treated 180 degree different and they worked until we came to a price we both agreed on and we drove it home.
Still get e-mails from the first dealership that if they can do anything to let them know. Yeah, one time i'll tell them exactly what they can do.

As long as they do business in a shady manor they deserve to be treated without respect. I refuse to engage in a process that the objective is to take as much money from me as possible without delivering fair value. All of my negotiating starts with the internet then phone negotiations before I walk in to sign. And I play 2 or 3 against each other until I'm close enough to buy. I don't really like to treat people that way but the deck is stacked in their favor. And I still probably DON'T get the best deal!

Start looking a good month before you want to buy. Get the dealers more interested in you than you are in them. I gives you time to find what you want for the price you want. You have the power because you don’t have to buy anything. It’s okay to lie to them and do whatever you want. Your not there to make friends, it’s a business deal. If they don’t want to live in the world of capitalism, then move on to the next dealer.

Since there is no proof this came from a Toyota Dealership (maybe I'm missing something), other than the individual saying so, how do we really know its not from Ford, Chevy or Dave's Used cars?

Despite what we read on the internet - nobody is beating a Dealership on anything - ever.

If your trading in a used car to a dealership your already behind the eight ball. Your never going to get the max for your vehicle that you could selling outright yourself.

I don't know the individual who submitted the text to R/cars maybe he's a good guy, but since we are only "seeing" part of the conversation maybe he was being a PIA/Dick to them prior and they just decided this was an easy way to get rid of a whack-a-doodle- customer.

Sorry beast I meant to quote the OP.
