    Hello Guys!

I have a 2000 Tundra, V6 2 wheel drive with a bad tranny and radiator. I also have a 2001 Tundra V8 2 wheel drive with a good tranny and radiator. Both engines run great, the V8 especially good! My son wrecked the V8 truck and not worth fixing with all the body work needed. I'd like to take the V8 engine, tranny and radiator and put it in the V6 truck. I know I'll have to take the V8 computer and swap out as well, but my question is, do you think with wiring harness is the same?? I would think so, but just not 100% Any negatives with attempting this?

    Thanks!
    Wendell

A good saying as well, but when you are carving new territory and you need to get things done.... you tend to find out what you are made of.

My opinion is tackle this job if you have plenty of free time on your hands.

    You’ve done engine swaps before?

Barring someone that has actual experience making this swap, you're probably best equipped to answer your own question, since you have both trucks in your possession for comparison.

Since both engines were available in those years, it's logical that at some point, enough parts can be exchanged to get back to a common vehicle configuration for both engines. The only issue might be if the V8 trucks have significantly different basic elements that are not easily changed. For example, transmissions are likely different given the horsepower and torque of the V8, and this may require different mounting points, i.e. a different frame with different cross-member configuration. It was easy to build a truck on a frame, no so easy to change a frame to another part number.

If there is a question about any component, like the engine wiring harness or the frame being the same, you can always avail yourself of Toyota of Cool Springs hospitality and use their site to verify common part numbers between the two trucks. A plus is you'll have the actual VINs to enter into the search...that may reduce the data input.

You would be able to work behind a Toyota parts counter after this swap. :D

Even if it's good, if that radiator in the 2001 is not a recent replacement, I would go ahead and splurge on a new Denso for $110 bucks...it will be no extra work and money well spent. It would SUCK to do all that work and have an old radiator cause a "pink milkshake" shortly after the swap....oh, and throw a new Aisin Timing belt water pump kit on there too ($170) if it's remotely close to needing it. It will be much easier to do while you have the engine out while your swapping it...

Pretty sure both trucks had the same A340E transmission , so that is one less thing to worry about. :)

Given you have both trucks you can do it. Easily? Not sure but you have all the pieces.

As a good friend of mine says, anything is possible with a welder and cash.

Yes v8 should fit. Need motor mounts and everything from v8 to fit. Should not have too many issues

Another important area of difference to check between the two trucks...front suspension. I can almost guarantee the coils will be heavier for the V8, and maybe the anti-roll bar as well. On other vehicles, I have seen as many as four different coil spring part numbers depending on the engine and what options are on the car.

Great point! The problem with the 2000 V6 tranny is the strawberry milkshake issue. From what I've read, the milkshake issue is mostly connected to the gen 1 V6 tundras, maybe i'm wrong, but for $110 it's a no brainer

I love your taste in welders, as I'm employed by Miller, welding is not an issue.

Hey did you get it in? Did You need any different parts?

I’m looking for a v8 to put into mine. Originally I wanted to supercharge my v6. But it’s cheaper to do the swap with similar results (Plus I can always by the s.c. for the v8).

My guy said that if you get the same generation v8, it’s a direct drop in. And you should be fine for smog. Except for 05 V8 because it’s has a bit more hp and extra parts.

the v6 frames i believe have different engine mount locations and transmission cross member location. its doable. but there will be fab work.

and if your going through the trouble, do a 05 or 06 v8 and trans.. more power, more gears.. and your going to need a donor anyway for harnesses and the cluster

Thanks for the advice. I hope there’s not too much fab work... Idk how to do fab work yet. It might be worth it to just get another v8 tundra for cheap if there’s too much fab work. I’ll read up on it and see what the difference is On the 05/06 vs older ones. I was hoping to find something at the yard and just pull the motor, harness, and cluster. If I do the 05 06 Swap I’ll likely grab a trans too for the extra gear.

honestly price wise you'd likely make out cheaper just finding a whole donor truck. or just sell yours for a v8 truck.
