It is with a heavy heart that my 2017 CM TRD OR is no longer with me. I loved that truck more than any vehicle I have ever owned but after looking at what I was paying in gas a month it didn't make sense to keep it. My commute is long and it sucks and we do a lot of driving for kids sports on the weekend. I was filling up 2-3 times a week and with the 12.5-13.5 MPG I was getting that is a lot of $$$. In addition due to work and family I just wasn't getting the chance for backwoods camping, over landing, etc that I wanted so the Tundra was basically a commuter vehicle for me.

After many sleepless nights and conversations with my wife, I (well mostly she) made the decision to trade the Tundra in. This resulted in much lower gas expense, lower monthly payment, and reduction in insurance premium. I ended up in a 2020 Subaru Outback Limited so I still have the ability to get off road to my beach camping/fishing spot down on the TX coast. Not a bad car at all but it isn't a Tundra.

In a few more years the kids will be gone, my commute will change and we will be looking for a small travel trailer and my plan is to be back in a Tundra. In the meantime I will still stop by to see what is happening in the Tundra community.

Oh and for those that complain about the lack of technology and amenities in the Tundra, I have all of that now and would give it up go back to my SR5 in a heartbeat.

I considered getting a smaller truck or car like you as well.

I spend 100 in gas a week and it gets boring but it isnt hurting any. I just hate spending that kind of money on gas.

Then I thought for the 4 months of summer we get in NY I would miss the hell out of it.

Still on the fence but I haven't been in a car in a long time

If you can swing it, do it. I bought a used civic to commute to work and back and best money I've spent (knock on wood). 30MPGs is much better than 13. Traffic doesn't bother me as much LOL

yep..or lease a small 4 bangers. The savings in gas will offset the monthly cost and you don't have to worry about maintenance.

Luckily I drive back roads so average 15.5 MPG on the regular. But I also didn't get rid of my previous car a 2003 Toyota Celica. That will be my Spring-Fall daily unless I need the truck for something. Plus it's a project car so it may be down from time to time so I can work on it. 31 MPG is NICE though.

Time passes quickly. Enjoy the Outback, but know there's a Tundra around the corner.

OP, you have to do what you have to do that's financially sound for your family.

I did the same, parked the Tundra and bought used civic SI as a commuter. Just need to keep the civic for about 33 months before I break even on this purchase.

I drive a work van, if I had to commute I would not use my tundra, I would get a small car
    .
I find it costs a lot even if I only fill up like one time a month.

I think subarus are cool and all but I just don't quite understand the use of a CVT in almost their entire lineup.
I understand the pros and cons of them but, I used to drive a vespa with a CVT and I think it would have been way more fun to have a standard transmission.

Good luck with it. We'll still be here when you get back.
