So, I walk my dog in my neighborhood twice a day and, on 2 separate occasions, we have been attacked by dogs (and dozens of other occasions where we were charged by other dogs). The attacks (and charging) occur because of careless owners letting their dogs off leash or not being able to control them while on leash. One dog was an 80 pound rottweiler and the other was a 100 pound akita/lab mix. On the 2 occasions, I had to physically fight the dogs, but not before they got to my dog (a 60 pound lab mix. She is so sweet and passive that she just stood there and took the attacks). That rottweiler charged and attacked 3 times before I was able to kick it to the ground (I kicked it enough times that it did not get back up).

So, I have been contemplating some additional methods of defense. I am not interested in lethal force so I am considering a stun gun. I looked on Amazon and there are many manufacturers that have a combination flash light and stun gun; which would be ideal since I frequently walk in the very early mornings and late at night. However, the reviews on many of these stun guns talk about how cheap they are and how easily they break or even how difficult it is to activate the stun. Most of these models are in the $15-$30 price range. I don't mind paying a premium ($100+) for one that is reliable, but I want to be certain of what I am purchasing.

So, can anyone recommend a good stun gun for my situation? or perhaps recommend an alternate form of non-lethal defense?

    Thanks,

    To much to list:)
Pepper Spray and not a little can of it. A good sized can that will put out a nice stream. You can also get a taser but you do not want them that close to begin with.
Sabre Red Dot Spray Gel. Usually the bigger the can the more it sprays and the distance it sprays is much better. The gel will stick with them awhile and they get to take it home with them!!!!!!

Have you looked at Taser's civilian offerings? They have a light/stun gun combo that may work for your needs.

I'd also consider bear spray. Dog spray is pretty weak stuff.

You can also carry a good piece of oak as a walking stick, between the walking stick (wink wink) and a good spray they should never get close. Hope you are calling law Enforcement when this happens.

Indeed. I called animal control after both occurrences. The owners got a nice visit from an animal control officer.
