I have an idea to keep factory step tubes, but solidify them. Simply remove the tube, lay 3"x3" 1/4" angle iron on top of the brackets, mark and drill. Then lay on top of brackets again and weld 2"x2" .250 wall square tube from the frame to the inside of the angle in about five locations. I would go across to the opposite side under the oil pan and also behind the transfer case on my own truck, essentially adding 2 cross members, and cat conv. theft protection as well. Finally remove the brackets and bolt the step tube directly on top of the angle. Only issue I see is moisture building up between the step tube and the angle, so some good bedliner coating might be good. Opinions? Yes, it will reduce center ground clearance and obviously be heavy. Neither are of concern here.IMG_20210526_103334.jpg Bonus: serious t-bone protection!
