Need some help on this one. I've been dealing with a clunk that's been driving me nuts. Happens all the time...backing out, pulling in and while driving. I originally thought it was my LCA bushings. I checked everything underneath. Nada. No rubs, nothing loose. I'm thinking now it could be the steering rack. I already have coach builder poly bushings in hand just in case.

Jacked her up on one side. There is no tire movement or sound when I rock in the 12 and 6 positions. But as you can see in the video, in the 9 and 3, there is a clunking coming from the center area of the engine bay.

Is the rack the culprit or is this normal???

I have no idea without getting under to check, but no, that's not a normal sound on mine.

Thanks. What would I be looking for? I imagine I will need someone else cycling the steering while looking underneath?

I thought a 9 and 3 knock usually meant tie rod. My 04' ended up needing the strut assembly and Just replaced the whole damn thing.
You can try here but he really doesn't show any particular knocking or demonstration, just places to look. I'll keep digging.

    K. Back out to the garage. I don't "think" it was the tie rod but since I was suspicious it was the rack, I could have been looking past it. The thing is, my steering doesn't feel loose or squirrely.

I really appreciate the support...love this site!

Yeah I’m not sure either. Hopefully whatever it is it’s not a big deal. There’s some great mechanics/DIY people in here that I’m sure will chime in.

Not sure if I'm seeing it right but it sure looks like your upper ball joint has play. Jack the truck up from the lower control arm and push the top of the tire in and out and look for play.

Is your steering wheel locked when your rocking the tire side to side? How much lift do you have?

I'll try your suggestion tomorrow. Yes, steering is locked. 2.75 inch lift. Thanks.

The noise your hearing could be the steering lock itself. Try it again with the steering unlocked and jacked up from the lower control arm when you check the upper ball joint.

When you check the upper push the top of the wheel in hard.
