Good Morning. Tried to do a search but couldn't find definite answer.

My 17 Tundra will be lifted this weekend. I went with the Zone Offroad 5" lift. Manufacturer states that my OEM wheels will not fit because of clearance. To my understanding it is because of the front knuckle being replaced as part of the kit.

My question is, at the event of a flat how would you deal with the spare? Is it ok to drive with the spare or should I replace the tire on the OEM spare and get close as I can to 35's without actually going 35 because I prefer to go without having to chop of metal or removing things under the truck to make 35s fit. I understand its good to have a set of 5 matching wheel and tire setup and to rotate but for the sake of not spending more if possible as well as wanting not to carry an extra 5th set on my bed, what options do I have?

If its ok to run my spare wheel and just upgrade to the tallest tire I can without modifications to oem spare location, whats the tallest tire I can fit under there?

I am also under the impression that I will not be able to run the spare on the front wheels of the truck because of clearance issues on the replacent zone knucle, if thats correct wouldn't I just be able to keep the spare on the rear axle of the truck (if flat was on front axle, just move a rear tire to the front and run the spare on the rear)? This would be of course for emergencies only and just to get me home.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank You!

I'm assuming you're putting a block in the rear with stock shackles? If so, 295/70/18 (about 34.3") should fit back there. Mine clear my Toytec shackles by about 1/2" on each side.

Yes, you are correct. Blocks for now however in a month or so im adding coach builder pieces which will replace the blocks with shackles. Thanks for the quick reply!

I cant stress enough how helpful this forum is. I came from the sister page (tacomaworld) and they were also very knowledgeable and helpful as well!

Any modification to get the full size spare up there Joon? Looks like you're causing me to spend more money. Full size spare has been on my mind lately.

The block that comes with your kit is 3 inches. The +3 shackles will net you a lift of 1.65 or just a tad more. If you remove the blocks, i believe you will lose some lift.

Let me know how that goes.

Actually your right. What the coach builder kit consist of was shims up front and shackes to bump up the rear a bit. I believe I go down in size with the rear block in addition to the shackles. I took notes at home but I dont recall completely. But it was just to gain another 1.5-2" of lift. And I only plan on doing that if I decide to go 37's and have the extra funds for a re-gear.

Froggy78, Are u on a zone lift? If so, mind sharing a few pictures of your ride?

Personally, I would just get a matching spare. I know the extra cost sucks, because I went through it too, but a 5 tire rotation offsets the price a little bit because your tires will last longer. Only real additional cost will be the 5th wheel. Having a smaller tire on the rear axle can screw up your diff. Might be okay for a short distance in an emergency to get to the nearest tire shop, but what if you're out in the middle of nowhere or it happens at night and there's no shops open. And I can't imagine having to change the rear and moving the rear to the front on the side of the highway at night. One of the guys on the forum has a 35 under the bed. Rubs slightly on his CB shackles but I don't think it's too bad. Might even clear if he had thinner shackles like Toytec. Just something to keep in mind. And don't forget you'll need a block of wood or something for the stock jack after you lift.

Nope, no modifications. But the tire hits that bracket and prevents it from laying completely flat up against the bed bottom. But no big deal as it still gets in there pretty tight.

You can always wait til you get your lift and wheels. Then try putting one of your wheels up in there to see how it fits before actually buying the 5th wheel. Then if you're happy with the fit, then go spring for the extra wheel and tire. Actually, @aramirez73 is about to try this exact thing in the next day or two, but all 35's are a little different in size so his result won't tell you for sure.

Good call. I think ill try that out. I glanced at tire prices and the price between 35 and 295 is pretty small. so a spare 35 sounds like the route to go. pending fitment on spare wheel well of course.

I think my STT Pros are actually about 34.5. They run a little larger. And a lot of 35's are actually like 34.7 or so. So if you get a smaller 35, the difference might actually be like .2" difference. ;)

I just read your initial question, again. I bought a full size spare. I don't want to know what happens when you ride on a tire that doesn't match the size of the rest. Your diff would probably thank you if you had a spare that is the same size.

I haven't tried yet. I only carry it in the bed, when I am being cautious. Otherwise it is in my garage. I have M/T's so, I am a little less worried.
