On my way home from work today I heard something rattling around under the bed today. I took a peek under the truck and found the chain that lifts the spare tire into its storage location dangling a few inches below the tire. The spare tire is snug up against the truck so thats not an issue, but I cant figure out where to store the excess chain at. I oushed it up through the center of the spare and its now just hanging out on the top side of the rim but im sure ut will fall out again here shortly. Any of y'all have any tricks to keep this from happening all of the time?

What about zip tying it? Clip it when you need to use it

    Might have to do this.
cant say that I'll always have a pair of wire cutters on hand to cut the zip tie, and dont want to confuse the wife if she ends up having to change a flat

I chained my spare up with 2 chains and 2 locks just to keep the spare from getting stolen.

Zip tie a magnet with an eyelet to the chain. Attach the magnet to the rim. Problem solved.

I have a knife on me all of the time, except when im on my way to and from work, we arent allowed knives at work, so I dont risk accidentily forgetting to take it out of my pockets. I have a few small tools under my seat, including a multi-tool, but seems ridiculous that I should have to zip tie up my spare tire chaon on a truck that cost $40,000 and has less than 4,000 miles on it

I rubbed a Pittsburgh curb hard midway through a stay there and chunked out a substantial piece. Before taking on hundreds of more miles to Tennessee and back to Ohio, I tried to use the "tool" to lower it. What a joke. It was a broke POS. Took it to NTB and they took 2 hours to finally jimmy-rig the spare off and swap the tires from the spare to the stock rim (that part too 10 minutes). I hate the way they mount them under. I realize it's 40k truck, but I saved an extra Benny if I get a flat to tow it to a dealer. Terrible under bed mount tool experience.

Sorry... Had to rant. I should just put it in the truck bed.

I wish someone would've stolen mine. Then I could justify getting KO2's.

At least that's what I'd have told my wife I had to do:yay:

I like the bugee idea though - especially if your work is anti-knife

I think the tire was raised up by the chain, someone turned the wrong way.
I would crank it down and keep cranking to crank it back up.
It's designed to take up its slack.

Noticed my chain was hanging out to the other day. I didn’t really bother with it and threw it back in the hole. Might try the bungie idea

You can wrap the chain twice around the shaft/rod right above it. you have to reach inside through some holes. Once you are under the car, you will see what I mean.
It wraps twice and just a little bit of chain will be hanging.
That's what I did the first week I bought the car ...
Last week when I was checking the torque on the rear differential, the chain was still in the exact same spot and hadn't moved!
Just have to remember to undo it if you get a flat.

btw, I don't recall the last time I had to use a spare tire! However I like the zip tie / magnet idea. It maybe easier to undo than my idea.

My chain hangs too as Im pretty sure they all do. I dont have any rattles, but our Tundras do make a knock (cant remember what it is but is some self check-like our gas pump that cycles 7 hours after shut off) shortly after moving that I mistook as the chain hitting. Check your sway bar bolts too and maybe even you wheel center caps. Could still be the chain, but it hanging like that is normal. Noboday likes their truck rattling so I wish you luck in solving it!

If it is normal then I might have a different issue. I'll look at everything when it gets light out this morning

It's normal nothing wrong with it. Same thing was on my 16 Tacoma and I asked them. Instead of cable Toyota moved to cable chains and in order for it to reach the ground it has to be that long.

As others said, it is normal. It does not wind up the chain it’s basically on a pulley system. It pulls the chain up and drops the slack down. Try using a bungee cord to see if the noise disappears. If it doesn’t obviously you have another problem. I’ve never noticed mine making a noise although I’m sure it does slightly. But I always have the radio on even just a little bit.

By the way it looks like you need to hit the chain pulley with some rust protectant lubrication. Noticed a little rust. I hit mine with some PB blaster.

Normal. Nothing wrong with it. The tire lowers with the chain so when it raises, it drops the slack. Man I'm sorry but if this gets you that bent out of shape, you should consider lowering some stress. Getting upset and saying "but seems ridiculous that I should have to zip tie up my spare tire chaon on a truck that cost $40,000 and has less than 4,000 miles on it". If it bothers you that bad maybe you should sell it. It's just a chain for the spare. Get yourself a bungie cord and strap it down or like someone else said, a velcro strip would work pretty good.

I dont really want to admit it, but I found the cause of the noise! I always have bungee cords stretched out and connected to the rear most "D-Rings" in the bed. I had brought some stuff to work to give to a fellow coworker and I never hooked them back up to the D-Rings. I hooked them back up and I tried hitting every bump I could on my way to work and didnt have a single sound come from the bed of the truck...how embarassing!

Glad you found the sound - shame the whole sound issue revealed the chain dangle debacle. I actually noticed my chain hanging once we got it home from the dealer, thought something was broke.

The chain hangs down like this on my Tundra, and it also hung down on my 2016 Tacoma and 2010 4Runner. Oh well.

Just want to thank all people in this forum who gave me idea about this problem. I got a 2020 LX 570 and found spare tire chain dangling. Started to search internet and found your forum. On the pictures you will see how I resolved the problem. The strange thing is that before I had 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser and I don't remember spare tire chain dangling there. Somebody knows meaning letters "A" and "D" on the disc?
