No not to get rid of my Tundra, however since I am continuing to average 4-5K miles a month I am getting a work vehicle. I am compensated well enough that the Tundra mpg is not the issue. The issue is I have a 10 month old truck with 37K miles on it and while they really hold their value, I am not helping the cause. I have a friend who is a general sales manager for Toyota and I had him appraise my Tundra vs. it equivalent with normal miles and I am losing $2-3K because of the high mileage. So the old (new) Tundra needs to catch her breath and I have decided to get something smaller. I really enjoyed the Subaru Outback I had a few years back and was leaning towards it because of the AWD. I do a lot of mountain driving and not just public roads but I am on a lot of peoples property with some of the craziest driveways I have ever seen. I know some of you in the Colorado area drive Toyota cars so I am looking for input.

I want something comfortable for a 12 hour day of windshield time, and something that will get me up and down in all weather. Since I am doing this it wouldn't hurt to save some of my car allowance with good mpg. I know the group here owns and has owned a plethora of cars and trucks which is why I ask. I will be purchasing renowned so high mileage could be a good question as well.

    Thanks in advance.

I use a Corolla for my DD for the same reasons you have. The Tundra is my weekend warrior. I took her to the car wash today :D

FWD does just fine in the snow. Granted, an AWD might have an advantage during our extreme weather if roads are super slick. I’ve seen plenty of vehicles stuck- especially FWD. However, these FWD guys were driving when it’s 12”+ of snow or over freshly plowed snow that turned to ice and were going uphill. In any event, if the weather gets that extreme I take the Tundra to do its job.

Lezbarus are a great AWD vehicle, but so are Dodge Charger RT’s that are AWD. Both have semi-low ground clearance. Just depends what you want!

I wondered how soon into the thread this would come up and should have figured it would come from you. Yes they are great vehicles in inclement weather and at 6-01 250 pretty comfortable on the long haul. I will have to sit in a corolla and see how they feel. I was thinking Camry or Accord on the car side.

Get the Camry over the Corolla. The Corolla does its job, but the Camry is a bit roomier.

Dont pay attention to snobby boy. Suburus are reliable, decent MPGs, and handle well in the mountains. YES, there are a ton out here but there’s a reason for that. CAROLLA and CAMRY are also terrific, and I know NC mountains can be treacherous but you’d be fine in any of the cars listed

about to get a lease and leaning heavily towards the new Camry but the Subarus are nice. I test drove a manual WRX last year and man was it nice. the look is so so though. Subaru could do so much better. The 2018 camry is very appealing

The Prius is the cheapest car to own over a ten year period in existence. Maintenance, insurance, gas, everything. Cheapest to own, but hardest to admit to. The VW TDIs are very nice and last forever and the Subaru is another winner also.

@Sean266, you’re about done with your lease, wanna sell that Corolla? I know you take care of your vehicles. Text me if you do.

It’s always looking good. It’s up in May. I’ll prob trade it in for a used Lexus of some sort or maybe a Camry. I need something larger.

I have friend who drives a Prius because of the amount of driving that he does and loves it. Another friend that drives 80 miles a day back and forth to work drives a Scion the box looking one and he loves it. Both are roomy in side. But the Prius would win if they where to drag race. If you drive in the mountains the Prius would be the way to go they will pull a hill nicely

I'm in the Portland area and it feels like every other car is a Subaru. Plus, I bet ours have way more bumper stickers. I did have an '05 Forester XT (turbo) and it was a blast to drive. The first day I drove it to work my manager said, "ah, you got a Lesbaru!".

Ha. We have plenty of bumper stickers here. We have a lot of Jeeps, and Subaru’s- where it’s almost annoying to see so many. If you travel towards Boulder, the amount triples.

The all wheel drive chargers do quite well. The state patrol here uses them and they will plow the road if needed, they have been well liked in the winter here.

Subaru are very capable cars but their design team needs a slap on the face.

Same here, and we have some nasty areas. That being said most highways are generally plowed well. When you get into the mountains it’s all Expeditions and such. Most of our city folks have the Explorers which are AWD.

How about a Tacoma for a side car? MPG is better, great in all weather situations and you keep the truck factor :notsure:

I would go with Subaru for its AWD. We had Sienna 2wd and another Sienna with AWD and difference is pretty significant.

I noticed 2018 Corolla gets 28/36 and Corolla iM gets 27/35. I was surprised to see Camry is rated with 29/41. Puzzling.

no need for two trucks and as said it might as well get good gas mileage had three tacoma all in the 18-19 mpg range.

the camry is a good looking car. especially the XSE. As for the Prius, it was a consideration and would no doubt be the most economical. Just gotta get past the look.

I was in a similar situation a while back and I made up my mind on a used Lexis IS. Before I pulled the trigger my situation changed and I no longer needed a commuter, but that would have been it.

In the past I had a Corolla as a commuter and I loved it for it's purpose, until I got stuck in a snow storm in the mountains. I white knuckled it for an hour trying to keep my momentum and not get stuck. After that I decided it would be AWD or 4WD on every household vehicle, commuter or not, from there out.

I am leaning that direction for that very reason. Always better to have it and not need it theory. might look at the Rav 4 as well since they come in AWD
