Sooo many strange noises from brand new 2020 Tundra sport

I can't even begin to describe the type of stuff I'm hearing out of this truck. It literally just got delivered last week and I picked it up this week with 51 miles on it.

Right off the bat I noticed what sounded like metal clanking from outside the cabin when driving from a stop up until highway speed. While driving I hear clanking noises if I'm driving next to a barrier. I looked underneath it and only thing I noticed was a metal chain hanging from the spare which I secured but am still hearing it. Skid plate is secure..

After that begin I noticed that there are strange faint screeching noises I heard while coming to a stop at a few toll booths.

Then the mother of all weird a$$ sounds shows up. As I'm pulling into my neighborhood I start hearing this ungodly whirring noise that's so loud it's echoing off the sides of houses. See the video below. The noise seemed to stop after coming to a stop and seemed to slow down as the vehicle slowed down.

Basically everytime I got off the highway and pulled into somewhere more quiet with the windows down I thought I was hearing someone playing weird music but it turned out it was me every time. The sounds i heard were a spectrum of the craziest sounds I ever heard coming from a vehicle.

I thought toyotas were supposed to be reliable? I have never heard anything at all like this and have no clue how this truck ever made it past any inspection. This is a brand new truck...insane.

    Video of last noise:

Back to dealership. Demand loaner until everything is fixed.

When I got my 2020 last October, to replace my 2016, I did notice the difference in. The noise the engine is making in the 20 is noisier than the 16. As for other sounds, I have not noticed anything obvious.

Did you not take a test drive and check the vehicle before you bought it to see if it met your standards?

Noise =/= unreliability. The radio volume knob makes all noises go away.

But there have been a few posts in here about small issues with 2020s. The virus might have messed up production. Have the dealer ride with you. Don’t just drop it off. Ride with the tech and point out all the noises.

Check your disc brake splash shields.
One of them might be tweaked and rubbing a rotor.

Very easy fix if you crawl under the truck and bend it away from the rotor.

I noticed when I had the wheels off my truck... it was really easy to bump/contact/bend the the shield when putting the wheels on/off.
The shields are super flimsy sheet metal and bend quite easily.

Just something to think about and may save you a trip to the dealer.

Yeah - something's not right. I picked up my TRD Sport at the end of July and after 1,100 miles (300 of which I was towing a 6k lb Airstream) no issues or noises whatsoever. Back to the dealer - you need documented attempts at fixing issues if you want to qualify for Lemon Laws in most states.

The noise in the video is wheel speed related.

try checking each wheel from backside of wheel for debris.

Other noises I've heard before. I noticed the rear seatbelts make a tapping sound if not restrained.

And the passenger seat in mine vibrates alot when no one is in it. It makes a slight noise.

No didn't seem to be related to the engine at all, although the metal clanks at first seemed to be the catalyst for other weird hum noises so I was wondering if it was a clutch engaging on one of the various pullies or.soemthing

Yep! Welcome to owning a tundra in my opinion. I have a 2019, every time I drive it I swear it has a new annoying sound or clunk or break noise. Wish I kept my 14 Sierra some days. I’m going to disagree with the volume knob is the fix, pay 50K for a truck that makes noises like an old truck. No thanks. Good luck with the truck man

Isn’t that the super charger making noise. :boink:
Honestly you need to mount a few go pros cams under it and crank up the sound.:popcorn::popcorn: then take it back where you bought it for them to figure it out.
    Good luck

Hell my 2020 makes noises even when I am not driving it. Just walk by it and I get a thin metal pop underneath - almost sounds like exhaust system contracting and making a loud "ting" noise.

Thanks, definitely going to need luck because this thing sounds like it's about to explode. What the hell is going on at Toyota these days? Never again

Here's the latest noise. Would put the decibel level on par with an airplane

Here's some other fun noises it's making. Each noise seemingly coming from a different location in the truck.

Random squeeling noise on some kind of interval:
    https://youtu.be/MCyFY6G-oUg

Clanking noise present every time I drive it coming from god knows where.
    https://youtu.be/SrkLERxN6QQ

There is also a strange squeeky noise present almost always at very low speeds whether braking or not. My neighbor commented on it before knowing my situation. It's too faint to get on video unfortunately

No crazy sound with my 07 and none with my 14. A 2020 is basically the same mechanically....:notsure:

If every truck that was mechanically the same as mine had this issue Toyota would go out of business.

A typical commercial jet airliner decibel level is 120 to 140 dBs. 85 dBs can cause hearing damage. Just sayin....

I think I know what your sound is coming from. There's a gremlin under your truck with ones of those toy Lazer guns that rotates through several sounds each time you pull the trigger. I've never heard so many different noises from a new truck. I'd definitely take it to a dealer.

That’s a lot of noises. Kinda crazy and obviously not typical. I can’t help with any of those. My 15 didn’t make any noises. My current 19 started making a whirring noise while slowing down but only from around 25mph. Or at least that’s when you could hear it. It took less then 1/4 mile drive for Toyota to agree with me. Gave me a loaner. Called the next day and told me I needed a new transfer case. Weird but fixed it.

Volume knob wouldn’t fix that. And I sure as hell wouldn’t want to foot that bill out of warranty. Was almost $6g’s.

Also just take it to whatever dealer is close to you(that had good reviews)...if you can find one.

Haha that's what I was telling my neighbor, it's as if someone put random noise generators at all 4 corners of the vehicle that just go off at random times triggered by nothing in particular.

Dealer is scheduled but I have a feeling this is going to turn into a perpetual "can't recreate the issue" headache while I miss out on the rest of RV season.

That actually sounds a lot like one of the noises I'm hearing. A faint whirring noise at slow speeds whether I'm on the brakes or not. Wonder if mine is related?

mine would stop/couldn’t hear it at around 5-10mph. Probably not spinning fast enough to hear it. They put the frame ears on it and narrowed it down. It’s not common but Toyota knows about it. Only took them a couple hours to follow their T/S steps and verify with Toyota. It was approved and parts in the next morning.

There is a documented issue with a batch of Tacoma’s having rear axles that were out of spec.......My tundra had the same. Mechanic said it was the first he has seen in a tundra. Had a clicking and whirring noise from the rear axle as soon as I took delivery. It drove me mad......Took it back to dealer, rode with the tech, gave me a loaner truck and they brought in the regional Toyota mechanic to look at it. They determined the rear axle was out of spec, ordered a new one and installed it. Took about three days on a truck with less than dozens of miles.

To be fair, I understand the frustration but swearing off a brand and truck with the reliability history of this one is not something I would do. Give Toyota a chance to make it right - I am SURE they will. As stated before, take it back and take the tech for a ride to show them, get a loaner and tell them to call you when it’s all fixed

Just because you bought it from a stealership 4 states away, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a warranty.

Call the closest Toyota dealer and schedule an appointment. Describe your issues and let them have a go at it.
If it’s brand new what have you got to loose. That’s what I’d do.

Sorry about all the issues definitely frustrating. Hopefully the dealer can figure it out, I bet @shawn474 might be on to something - sounds like something rotational (bearing, CV axle, drive shaft?)

Might try playing around with 4WD - maybe engage and disengage and see what happens?

If all else fails with the offers people are getting for used Tundras I bet you could sell it and come out either even or a little ahead!
