My son has an '07 SR5 Texas Edition DC, 2WD, with the gas 5.7. Was driving down the highway today and in his words, the truck lost power, and he could barely get it started. It was towed to a shop that he trusts. and he went on to work.
The mechanic had it running, rough, but running. apparently misfiring on #6. He also could hear noise on the right bank, and removed the valve cover to investigate. This is the quote from his diagnosis...
"Found broken/stuck valve. Used bore scope to inspect for possible piston damage, found piston hammered with possible hole in piston, need to replace engine."
The estimate, as far as I can tell, is for an engine with 88K miles, about $5200, and with other misc parts and labor, the bill runs about $7900.
I don't know the mileage on my son's truck.
I thought I'd see what opinions y'all might have.

Price sounds very high for an engine replacement especially with 88k miles.
