Hello everyone, im Sam, 28 from NC, ive lived in Colorado for the last 4 years.

My first foray into toyotas and my first real truck “build” was a bone stock 2012 tacoma 4x4. That eventually snowballed into this.

Full blown supercharged, Long Travel build, with armor, lockers, 35’s, racks, lights, ect ect you name it i tried all of it.

Eventually learning that i wanted a more factory built, simple truck that could still haul ass in offroad, take camping and still be fun in town. My only real option for a factory truck that would do that wass... you guessed it a Waptor

So i traded the Tacoma for a 2018 raptor thinking it was perfect stock and that id never need to turn a wrench on the side of a trail again. I loved it at first, i regret the trade now. I Had the raptor for about 20k miles and 10 months, went on a lot of trips, lots if trails. Drove accross the country a couple times, hauled trailers through Colorado and Utah (moab), and up to Canada. During that time the raptor needed a few stays at the dealer for engine work, in addition to squeaky ball joints, constant exhaust rattle, leaky sunroof, clunky transmission, the list goes on.

My brothers and I have tentative plans to drive to to the bottom of the baja peninsula, and i have my own plans to drive to Prudhoe bay. I can say with certainty the raptor would not make either trip without mechanical issues.
Having most of my adult vehicle ownership being toyotas, the unreliability of the ford was not only disappointing, it was infuriating. While i owned my 2012 tacoma i also intermittently owned a 92 pickup, a 96 tacoma and 95 land cruiser, each with over 200k miles and zero mechanical issues.

(Please excuse the pavement pose, i deleted all the pictures i had of the cruiser after i sold it, ex girlfriend syndrome, i missed it only when looking at old pics lol, someone else had these)
    DA77F898-3F23-4E90-8951-C9065F99EEA7.jpg
    5D4A0E9E-3048-4C54-BB7C-9F419D9D74E7.jpg

Eventually, because im a gear head at heart, i found myself wanting to improve the offroad capability of the raptor, and after making a “build” list adding up to 20 grand of “wants” i decided not to spend a dime polishing a turd and sell the raptor. I dont miss it.

So now, im in the planning stage of a tundra build. Taking what i learned from my other toyotas and my raptor to build what i think will be the most capable (that i can afford) and reliable offroad travel, long distance camping, daily driver. A truck that i can depend on as a solo vehicle to take me and my brothers deep into Mexico or high into desolute BC and Alaska.

I havent yet bought Attila the Tundra. Im still saving, and after owning the raptor i refuse to go into debt for a vehicle (Or anything else for that matter).

Ive planned some of the modifications already and made a few purchases of what i know i want. The rest im still contemplating. heres what i have sitting in the garage already.

    -King 3.0 coilovers with adjusters
-King 3.0 tripple bypass’s for the rear.
-demello offroad 14+ tundra front bumper
    -ssbuilt rear tundra bumper
-5x falken at3w 35’s. My trailer has the same tires and i want to stay universal. Ill go 37’s once the trucks re-geared and locked. Not before.

Parts ive decided on but havent bought.
Subject to change let me hear your thoughts.
    -icon billet delta joint uppers.
    -rci skids
-arb dual air compressor/ volume tank

    Things im still contemplating
    Sliders
    Lighting

I would go 5.29 on the gear ratio because eventually you will go to 37's..haha
    RCI or victory4x4 for armor
    sliders I like WKOR

37’s are definitely the plan for daily driving and close to home trails, but for big 2,3,5 thousand mile trips ill want to put on 35’s. Will 5.29 be too low for that?

Welcome from NorCal. Tundra is a good choice for Baja due to the reliability as you've already said. I have taken a Tundra all through Baja and made it through one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit there. The guys here who, IMO, have the most experience building these trucks for DD and bashing through the desert are: @osidepunker , @papasmurf , @Vizsla @jc153, @joonbug , @KevinK ,@roypark, @GodlessPro etc. When I have questions, they're the ones I ask.

Curious what it was you didn't like about the fully built Tacoma?

It almost sounds like you'd be better off with an off-roading rig and a daily driver. Soon, I'd love to have a crewmax tundra for kid hauling and a 3rd gen 4runner built for offroad, but still street drive able

you're right, i plan for the tundra to be the DD and then to build a long travel (or sas, not sure) 1st gen 4runner or something similar and small for technical trails. No one truck can do everything.

As far as the tacoma, the long travel was alot of maintenance and noise I didnt want to do a whole cab back tube chasis/ 4 link so i kept it leaf sprung, which wasnt great. Then i put her on a diet and did fiberglass bedsides and fenders, which i didn't know at the time is NEVER a clean install and im pretty ocd. So i didnt really like it much after that. I outgrew it and was looking for a change. Something that can actually tow weight in the mountain altitude. Something more spacious. Like i said me and my family go on some long trips, Tacoma's back seats are not suitable for adults for long trips IMO.
so my double cab tacoma was still only a 2 seater for my uses. After the raptor, i wont go back to a small truck for DD. I have to bend my neck like gumby to just get in tacomas, i didnt notice that before owning a fullsize.

I looked at everything and although I never owned a Tundra after driving a Raptor, Dodge, Ford and Chevy I
Looked at Toyota. I drove a Tacoma, Rav4, 4Runner and then the dealer said "Only one I have left is the pro"

Took that for a ride and loved it.

The dealer was new and he said the older dealers didn't want to talk to me because of how I was dressed.
I had ripped jeans and a T-shirt on.

Well, the new guy sold a flagship and I got a Pro.

    Enjoy
