Well guys and gals I sold my 18 Tundra. I purchased this vehicle 4/2019 with 1,600 miles for 42,900 and yesterday sold it for 47,800 with 20,000 miles to a local GMC dealer. I liked my truck but due to having a company vehicle it only got driven to church and the ball field. I plan to purchase another in a year or so but couldn’t pass up the offer. Luckily I sold my sister my old 2000 Tundra so I can use it for now if needed.56469E75-4274-4C07-BC09-3A039B8E952C.jpg

That’s ridiculous. Now they have to find someone to pay more than that to sell it to.

Nice to unload since had a bunch of money tied up in something you rarely used but...not sure why you’d sell if your gonna turn around and buy another in a year?

He potentially beat his future trade-in value by even more than he made on the sales price.

If he's not using his truck at all, but he wanted to get a 2022 anyway, it's a good move for a patient person.

That's what I'm wondering! Either the current market is crazier than I thought, or there's more to the story here...

Market is ridiculous. Ford dealer down the street has a half filled lot.

Just went online to price out the same truck I got in January. Found an identical listing for $6k more than I paid. Only difference is a year newer, but no running board or tonneau cover.

yeah but I bought a brand new 2020 platinum for 50k so why in the hell would I or anyone else pay 2k less and get a lower trim that’s 2 years older with 20k miles. Just makes absolutely no sense. The dealer is gonna lose money on it. Good for seller for getting rid of it for the price he did since he had the option to but no one in their right mind is going to pay that much for that vehicle

Smart move. Drive that company car til the truck market stabilizes, if it were me I’d think about year two of the new tundra. So a 2023 model, skip year one let them work out the kinks.

this time next year or two they’ll be back to 2500 rebates and zero percent financing and selling new ones at invoice or less.

I think "in their right mind" is the key phrase there. :D Plenty of suckers out there for dealers to prey on. All this dealer needs is one to sell this truck to.

Agreed. I can't fathom spending that. I guess this housing market combined with increased demand in used vehicles is making the market ripe with people ready to shell out.

What little buyers regret I had from January is long, long gone seeing these prices now.

I'm just glad I bought mine at the end of 2019 right before all of this shit hit the fan.

I was tempted a couple times in the last few months, even Vroom offers have been decent, and would net me about 12k in equity after payoff. My 2018 Limited Crewmax just hit 83k miles today. Problem is, I still have trouble finding something I like driving as much as my current Tundra. I have seen some older models that I could possibly see going payment free with for a couple years while the market comes back down. (Hopefully?)

But to your point about trade-in.. At least with a trade in you get a tax credit towards your purchase depending on state. If OP bought once and paid gross receipts or excise tax on $40k+ in 2019 and wants to do it again paying tax on $40k+in a year, that eats into a lot of the money “made”.

And then to mention the time to buy, sell, shop and buy again.. I like the move to unload it but not to hop right back in.

its only a good move if the 2022 1)is the truck he truly wants and 2) within the price point he's willing to spend. Hell the 2020+ domestic trucks are considerably more expensive than the $42,000 for a platinum i spent in 2015. My buddy just bought his Ram for 64k!!!

IMHO the truck market is going to get rocked in the next 12 to 24 months due to many factors. I feel that a massive inflation correction is coming and the rapidly rising gas prices are going to be the main cause. If you are not absolutely head over heads in love with your Tundra...selling it the the current market has the potential to be a GREAT move. I don’t blame anyone that does regardless of what they want in the future. I unfortunately love my truck and thankfully I can afford to gas her up at 5 bucks a gallon if necessary.

Suppose he trades his truck in a year from now when supply chains (and thus truck values) normalize. Given what he bought it for before things went crazy, he’s probably looking at $38k trade-in after things normalize. Maybe $40k?

Now I don’t know what tax is on a vehicle purchase is in your state, but here’s its 7%. On 40k, that would be $2800 in tax saved by holding onto it for another year and trading it in. But there is no way that truck will be worth anywhere near $48k after things normalize. It’s far more likely he’ll be back to upper 30s for trade-in value on that truck.

People flip trucks all the time. He’s just waiting a year or so (maybe two years? Waiting till 2nd year of next gen? That’s what I’d do...) to buy again because he doesn’t need a truck this year. It’s all but guaranteed he came out ahead.

I just sold my 2019 Limited Crewmax for $50,000 to a high end used car dealership. Felt right to get out of it at the top of the 2.5 gen Tundra market.

This thread made me curious enough to start texting with the local GMC dealer. Kind of wondering if I should also take advantage of the offer now. It was higher than Vroom, and 2500 more than the highest offer I had seen yet. Straight 49k. I also know where there is a nice 2008 crew max with 150k miles on a 5.7 engine that can be had for oddly enough the EXACT difference between my payoff and their offer. Offer is within 700 of my loan balance the day I bought my truck new in 2019.

I thought I was a little more solid in my willingness to hold.. shaking a little now I guess. HA!

The longer everyone waits, if they're any bit on the fence, the less you'll get for your truck. In the past two weeks I've tracked my truck value on carvana and its gone down 3k alone. Just wait for the day the new tundra gets unveiled and its all over.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
I agree...there’s definitely some things stirring in the truck market!
I have a family member that just bought a ‘20 F250 from a close family friend for $48+K.
Friend was basically selling for what he had in it.
My family member talked to a local contact at the Ford dealership and the guy said he’d give him $58,2 for it?!?!?!
As of this past weekend, he’s not sold it. Needless to say, that $10K flip is enticing.

Good for the OP! Understandable move and fortunate timing!

It would have to be something crazy for me to part with my truck. I’ve got to much time, blood, sweat and busted knuckles invested...and still have a mod list. Plus, I just love the damn thing!

By “all over”, surely you mean that Tundra values will be back to Toyota normal (which is still higher than everyone else’s normal).

Remember that new generations of Toyota vehicles have not ever tanked the value of previous generations. Look at old 4Runners, Tundras, Tacos, and Land Cruisers. Outdated features/mpg/etc don’t really matter.

I ain’t gonna lie SOMETIMES I do miss my 4Runner but never enough to go back. The ride comfort and now handling with the rear sway bar is MUCH better...

In Northern Nevada we're at 3.70 a gallon. Most spots in California at basically 5 a gallon. Pundits think we go 6-7 this summer.
