Pretty much anywhere in Colorado west of the front range.

Well 12 hours puts you right about Colorado or New Mexico, right? Utah and Nevada are out.

I thought most of Texas goes to Steamboat for spring break. They have a Texas week but I think it's in January.

So this is the first time you two are going skiing together? Or this is the first time both of you are ever skiing? If it's the first time ever skiing, I would find a resort with a lot of beginner runs (green circles). The best resorts with a bunch of black diamonds won't do nothing for you.

I'd definitely give some consideration to Southwest Colorado, Telluride - Silverton. Fantastic mountains with amazing snow, but you also mentioned "other things". IMO - Highway 550 - the "Million Dollar Highway" is probably the most amazing country in a state full of amazing country. The scenery is staggering, and there are some great towns in the area. Ouray is a must, and anything around there is down right awesome.

If I didn't have to live with a major airport around for transportation, I'd hightail my ass off the Front Range to that area and never remotely look back...it's that amazing.

Where ever you go, for cryin out loud, do not wear a back pack or anything else that can get caught on a chair lift when you jump off. The trend lately is you will end up hanging around for a while by your neck.

Good question. I'm sure someone will chime in on that. I mainly snow shoe here in CO. It's free.

I haven't rented for decades, but I imagine it's pretty much the same today....ski's, boots and poles.

I ski with a waist band pack to carry my various goodies in - just remember don't ski with anything you don't want inserted in your body should you biff it...

Good gear is critical....stay dry, stay happy.

You can call resort where you plan to stay on check rentals on clothing. You can definitely rent skis, boots and poles. Helmets can be rented too (recommended). Take a lesson. You don't want to go down a mountain without knowing how to stop. Stock Michelins are fine, just stay out of the deep stuff.

I ski with a backpack; no issues. Just pay attention and don't play around on the chair lift LOL.

Get a good snow jacket, snow suit, snow boots, wool socks, and snow gloves that you are still able to maneuver ur fingers in.

You might consider packing food, water, blankets etc. for the drive. People have been known to get stranded. Like Sean266 said, gloves, boots, jackets, nice socks etc. http://articles.latimes.com/1993-01-07/news/mn-949_1_deep-snow
    Have a great time!

As Sean said get yourself some decent clothing. It doesn't have to be top of the line but you don't want to get super cheap stuff. As a beginner you'll spend some time on your butt and it'll be a long day if you're wet. Many newbies overlook the importance of base and midlayers. The major equipment will all be available to rent and I highly recommend a helmet. Lessons are expensive but will make your learning curve much steeper and you'll have a better time.
I'll start with a disclaimer that a friend started this company and I am listed on the website as a team member/product tester but cost to value these are the best ski gloves I've used. Made by skiers for skiers. I ski 100+ days a year and have yet to have a pair last less than a season. Drop me a PM and I can try and help with gear if you need. http://www.freethepowder.com/

i have been skiing and snowboarding for the better part of my life. I personally can't remember a time I didn't have a backpack on. If someone isn't smart enough to tuck unused straps out of the way or just actually use them, then please, stick to the kiddy hills.

    Taos, NM
Wolf Creek, CO is amazing. In the general area is Telluride.
    Crested Butte, CO.
Monarch, CO. One of my favorites due to back country boarding.
Breckinridge, Keystone, A-Basin, CO. These are great resorts, but usually packed and expensive. Your looking at 190.00 per person a day.

Beaver Creek and Vail, CO. These are great resorts and it is going to cost you...big time.

Cooper, CO they have great snow and usually have good 4 pack pricing.

Loveland Pass, CO. Lots of open free riding and get rides back to the top from trucks.

Winter Park, CO. This is pretty big report as well.

Steamboat is just getting to far out for you. Might as well just fly into UT.

If you do any back country skiing or boarding, you really should look into a locator becon and a avalanche floatations devise.

Yeah really, I think flying to Utah is the best idea. I don't think I could drive 12+ hours after a few days of skiing.

Yeah, I've had difficulty driving the 4 hrs. from Tahoe after boarding. Of course that last run of the day, where I hit the tree ass first, made sitting for 10 min. uncomfortable,, let alone driving for hours.

Traffic here in Colorado is almost pushing 4 hour commute to the mountains. It's getting ridiculous.

That's actually a great idea. Morgan, are you planning to get ski lessons? Honestly, all you need is someone to show you the basics. How to work the bindings, getting on and off the lifts properly, how to stand back up after falling, how to wedge to slow down, sidestepping to go up a hill, and maybe show you which runs to stay on. An hour or two should be enough for you to get through the day. See if you can get one of the local tundra guys to help you out. Buying @COMiamiFan a lift ticket beats hundreds of dollars for a ski lesson. Your first ski lesson won't teach you much more than that anyways.

There might be better skiers on this forum than I am, LOL. I do know the basics, but I'm not an expert by any means.
