I am planning to put my 8" Kicker CVT behind the back seat of my '08. I am thinking about making a box that will go the width of the wall (minus the tool storage) and keep it low so I can keep the space on the back wall open.
Anyone try something like this? Just a long, skinny box with the sub facing upwards. Im not needing a lot of bass, just want to enhance the sound a little.
I would draw it out on a picture, but Im on mobile and dont have photoshop access.

I think firing upward would sacrifice too much space for the rear passengers. I would angle it to match the back seat angle. The CVT is super shallow, so you should utilize that to your advantage.

I couldn't find specs on recommended box cubic feet for the 8"...but I found some people installing the 10" in .4cf boxes...so what you describe might be way more volume than you need.

Check eBay for truck box ideas to give you a visual on how much space you will need.

I actually just cut the mdf for the top/bottom/sides.
Upward firing will keep the box off the back wall so I can use some mounts to hold things on the back wall and wont reduce pass space too badly. I will, however, be dropping the width from 48" down to 40" which will put me in the range for the 8" sub.
I will get pictures as I build it.

Cool, I'm interested. I am waiting for my 10" sub to show up, then I'm going to start figuring out my game plan for the least loss of space possible. I think it will go close to center, then I might extend the back/bottom of the mdf and build a bit of a storage bin/organizer from the sub to the door.

With an interior measurement of 7x8x40, I will have a capacity of about 1.3cf. Range for the CVT8 is .4-1.8 on a sealed box. Not sure if I would get better sound (cleaner, not just louder) out of sealed or ported.

Yeah it's been a while since I have been in car audio. My good friend( geeks out on home and car audio) did just do a sound quality install in his Lexus, and went with 4 -8" subs ported. I think larger cube boxes do well with ports, so maybe look into it. Also research port length/diameter for tuning it to a frequency.

I remember tuning to 40hz when doing SPL competitions.

Edit: where are you planning to mount the amp and what amp/head unit?

I dont have a new head unit yet. I am mainly getting everything built so it is out of my way. The amp is a Kicker ZX400.1 that I had hooked up to the sub in my Tacoma before I sold it.
I plan to mount it under the rear seat. Either driver side or center depending on how it fits.

Basic box. Letting it cure tonight. Tomorrow, I will seal the corners of the bottom and sides then put the top on. I will have to research the tuning, as I have never done that.
Ive seen a few that were covered in bedliner. Not sure I want to go that deep into it. Maybe just some automotive carpet....

Im just at a measly 200rms, but it is enough for me. I should say was, no clue how it will sound in the tundra. But the tacoma, it was enough.

Alrighty. So, I changed my mind on size. Final inside measurement is 8"W-5"H-40"L. I put 1.5"x1.5" in the corners to allow points I can add mounts in any configuration. Final capacity is .72cf. A bit less than originally planned, but still in the recommended range for sealed.

With seats set where I want them, I have enough space between the seat and box to put my hand between anv enough knee room for me to sit in the back (6' tall).

Going sealed first to see how it sounds. These are the specs for it that I found. Im in range for sealed, a little low for ported.
    • Recommended Ported Box Cubic FT: 0.80 - 1.2 (CU. FT)
    • Recommended Sealed Box Cubic FT: 0.40 - 1.8 (CU. FT)

Cool, it should sound good! It's nice to see that box depth work out ok. I'm still going with a wedge, but might make it a bit deeper/more upright then store stuff next to the box.

Let us know how it sound when you get it hooked up!

Will do. I wanted the space above the box open to mount stuff. Thinking I will get a molle panel. Wedge box will give more options for box size/sub size.

Parts should be here later this week and as long as the VA docs dont decide to immobilize my knee (tore meniscus) tomorrow, I will start the wiring process once all parts are in.

Decided it would be easier to plug a hole than to cut one later. Still waiting for LOC and wiring kit to get here. Put the port to aim under the center seat.

Alrighty. Got everything hooked up. Stock HU, Kicker LOC, Kicker 400.1 amp, Kicker CVT 8.
I played around with the box a bit. Sealed, sealed with polyfill, ported, ported with polyfill.
I found that ported fully stuffed with loosely packed polyfill has the best sound. HU bass setting is -5 (lowest it goes), I also played around with the settings on the LOC and amp.
Enough bass to accent the music but not enough to rattle stuff. Just how I wanted.
Wiring is run under the door side seat slider rail just behind the front mounting foot then into the wiring space under the trim and up to the dash. Because I didnt want the amp on when the engine isnt running, I wired the trigger to the ign switched circuit using an add-a-fuse.
