Sigh.. Why oh why isn't this 70S allowed in the US?

It literally can be sold ANYWHERE outside of North America.

Our laws are moronic. This would be the last truck you'd ever need to buy.

    End of rant.

I totally agree. I grew up with these in South Africa. You can't kill them. They will go anywhere and will keep going there.

We had these older models when I grew up. I know of many of them that had more than a million kilometers (>600k miles±) and still going strong.

Most vehicles that can't be used in North America a prohibited because they don't meet safety standards or emissions. That thing looks pretty beefy, and I doubt it would have sufficient crumple zones to satisify current standards and it might have edges that are too square for pedestrian safety. Even vehicles that look like they have boxy sharp edges aren't. It's an optical illusion. All edges that can make contact with a pedestrian are restricted and controlled. Your tax dollars hard at work...:notsure:

Oh that’s for sure. With most of the complaining about ride, comfort features, I wouldn’t want people to get carried away on here.

Shush! They don't need any ideas on more fun killing regulations. They'll get to sissifying everything eventually, but I intend to enjoy what I can while I can for the time being.

I have ridden in an ol FJ45 a worker had in the 70s in upstate NY. It definitely is a truck. We settled on a CJ for snow removal and buzzing around quickly. The FJ would have been a better choice.

I guess what admire about the 70 is its a "life truck" and ridiculously overbuilt. I do see similarities with the Tacoma and Tundra however. I guess it enabled me to enjoy the the simplicity of no push button start, auto unlock, safety systems and the like that are forcing their way into Toyotas truck line.

Everybody wants their truck to be theirs. I can respect that. You have to just marvel at this trucks simplicity, durability, dependability and permanence.

Maybe it's because I'm an old fart.

Looked something like this... With RUST. alot of RUST.

    @Tierhog

I definitely like the roughness of old FJ’s and LC. Personally for a great off-roading trip, this would be the way to go. Daily...not so much.

Funny, I used to hunt in a FJ40 for many years, and almost the same color.

Yeah.. Back then it was the same color just less shiny and had brown holes in the sheet metal. He loved it. Was useful in the gas crisis. We could only get gas on even or odd days and our license plate number (like 904-VRF) dictated when our fill up was. Gas stations were closed on Sunday.

It road rough but you seldom drove over an hour anywhere and if you did you took the car. Simple truck for simple times.

I love old and new landcruisers, I would love to have any of them but the pickup version is definitely cool. I don't think anyone in the US would love it as a DD, other than US landcruisers, they have 90s Tacoma interiors and comforts. Definitely a novelty but also very cool.

On a side note, in saw that land rover is coming out with a 2020 defender in many configurations, 4 cyl, V6, and maybe hybrid or even plug in EV. Idk about release to the US though. It looks more civilized and luxurious than these FJs

Some mixed reviews on those new Landcruisers. Maybe it's BS as they haven't tested em yet.

I'd love to drive a 70. Has airbags.. Even Bluetooth lol

Ive been in Costa Rica the last few days drooling over their Toyotas that we don't have or consider rare. Old fjs and newer trucks like this are all over the place.

I think its pretty lame that we can't have them. I can drive a 50s beetle no problem but can't knowingly buy a truck that doesn't meet somebody's standards for safety, maybe I shouldn't say that out loud or theyll take away my beetles.

If I could buy one by signing a "nobody's fault but mine if I crash and die" contract I would.

I had a restomod 75 FJ40. Looked great but drove like a tractor. Not for the faint of heart above 50 mph. Think I'll stick with my Tundra.
The same issue with the LC also applies to the LR Defender. Safety and emissions. Oh, you can have an awesome 25 year old Defender if you happen to have an extra $60 -150K lying around. Ridiculous. Regulations make it rare which makes it insanely expensive. Grrrrr!

The LC in question has a coil spring front end with radius arms. I figure it’s ride would be comparable to a new Jeep and many people DD those.

You can bring in a used Land Cruiser pickup, or any for that matter, as long as it is 25 years old or older. Pretty much no exceptions.
That said, you CAN bring in a partial Land Cruiser as parts, put it on a US chassis (the 80 series is ideal) and just call it a modified 80 series.
    Something like this.

    Another thing to note:

95% of all Land Rovers ever sold are still on the road.

The other 5% made it home
